In an interesting plot twist, a Santa in Sao Paulo, Brazil, appears to have put himself on the naughty list. Well, stealing a helicopter tends to do that. Police are on the hunt for a Sao Paulo Santa Claus who gave a new meaning to“Do as I say, not as I do”. According to the Sau Paulo state security, the santa rented the aircraft late on Friday from an air taxi service at the Campo Marte airport as part of a Black Friday surprise. And then things got seriouslyGrand Theft Auto-y, when the Santa forced the pilot to fly to a small farm outside of Sao Paulo, where they met a third person. The pilot was then tied up, of course, before the two thieves got away with the helicopter. After several hours, the pilot managed to escape and alert the police – but there has still been ...

You’re on the Internet so you must be looking for the latest cat gossip. Well, you’ve come to the right place. A few days ago Fox reported that Bart the cat (above) was hit by a vehicle and left for dead. His owner Ellie Hutson did what most people would do in the situation and gave Bart a proper send off, burying him under the ground near where the body was discovered. Ellie says Bart was “under a foot of dirt.”   Imagine the surprise when 5 days later Bart showed up in Ellie’s neighbour’s front garden. The stunned neighbour told the channel: “He [was] just sitting there looking at me purring, wanting food but obviously he couldn’t eat.” Among Bart’s injuries were a severe trauma to the head, a broken jaw, and a dead eye. Despite the injuries, B

Most iPhone and iPad owners are familiar with hunting down games and applications in the App Store, but there are other ways that apps can wind up on your Apple device. In the latest installment of our Ask a Dev series, iOS director Sean McMains explains that developers can use tools to distribute beta copies of an app without going through the App Store. He says developers can earn an Enterprise Certificate through Apple that allows creators to distribute apps through their own means. Additionally, the video, above, looks at the best ways to create an interactive storybook on iOS. McManis says that developers can either create a fully independent storybook app or they can create a product within iBooks. "Storybooks have a lot in common with games, so using a kit that's designed for gam...

After being shot in the face by a poacher seven years ago, Beauty the bald eagle lost most of her beak. Without it, she couldn't feed herself, and likely would have died in the wild. But now, Beauty's getting a second chance at survival in the form of a 3D printed beak. A team of researchers, engineers and dentists created the world's first prosthetic beak, which was modeled with CAD software and 3D-printed from nylon polymers. After a two-hour-long procedure, Beauty can now eat and drink by herself, though she's not ready to be released back into the wild. The eagle remains at Birds of Prey Northwest, the conservation facility that spearheaded the recovery project. In a Guardian column published this morning, an anonymous woman has discussed her decision to have her 17-year-old daughter “kidnapped” and sent to a tough boot camp in Utah. As she explains, she’d always had high hopes for her children but, as a teenager, her daughter started hanging around with a bad crowd. She developed “an attitude”, her grades dropped and then she declared her intention to drop out of school, and become a hairdresser. As her mum wrote: “I was distraught. There is nothing wrong with hairdressing, but I wanted her to get a proper education first, so she would have choices.” Desperate, knowing that once her daughter turned 18, she wouldn’t be under her control any more, this woman researched and found a boot camp for tro...

The cameras used to photograph news events, take family photos and snap pics of your adorable cat have changed over the years — and from hobbyists to professionals, there's healthy market interest that pushes for cameras that are smaller, faster and better. It's accelerated innovation — if you're a true enthusiast, you'll probably consider the camera you buy today to be obsolete in a matter of a few years. The big manufacturers continue to develop new features to woo photographers away from their current tools of choice. One innovation that stands out is the introduction of the SLR, or single-lens reflex camera. It used a mirror and a prism so that the image you saw through the viewfinder was more accurate to the one that would actually be captured on film. It was followed by the DSLR,

Once the cans were back in their proper place, he hopped in the car and headed to the office, forgetting the Surface was on top of the vehicle. The Surface slipped off and into the road, where cars dodged it for a while before it was ultimately driven over by a single vehicle, sending the Surface in one direction and the tablet’s touch cover in the other. I left my apartment at 1:53 a.m. Friday and arrived at the Fifth Avenue Apple Store at around 2:20 a.m. Six hours later, I had an iPhone 5 in my possession. When the original iPhone was released in 2007, the public was shocked that individuals were willing to wait for hours in line — often overnight and sometimes for several days — just to get a new gadget. Five years (and six phone launches) later, the lines are an expectation — even if the public at large still finds the concept of waiting overnight for a phone ridiculous. Still, each year, more and more individuals line up for the latest iPhone (and now iPad). In fact, a sort of cottage industry has developed around Apple launches, with marketers and brands using the lines as way to promote their products and services. I'm not a stra

Hurricane Sandy didn't stop Apple fans from coming out in droves in New York City to get their hands on the new iPad mini tablet, but the kickoff event was a bit less enthusiastic than previous product launches in recent history. It also started a bit later than scheduled. Although an Apple spokesperson confirmed to Mashable on Thursday the launch would begin at 8 a.m. ET on Friday, doors didn't open until 10 a.m. Once the line started moving, shoppers could get in and out relatively quickly. But according to Forbes report, the Fifth Avenue store may have had its third-largest crowd at an Apple launch ever. This may be due largely in part that the downtown locations are still closed. The news comes as the city that just went through — and is still going through — a relatively-standstill s

New sunlight-activated plastic lawn furniture keeps itself clean and white after two years of sitting outdoors. The same ingredient that kills bacteria and fungi in that plastic could one day go into paint for antibacterial walls and a coating for smudge-resistant touchscreens, according to new research. Scientists have long studied how titanium dioxide, a chemical commonly found in paint, sunscreens and cosmetics, destroys microbes and the stubborn layer of slime they create when they colonize a surface. When titanium dioxide molecules are exposed to sunlight, it kicks off a chemical reaction that creates free radicals, which penetrate the cell walls of bacteria and fungi and damage their DNA. To test how that reaction works outside of lab, researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Inte...

Dragonflies Wear Backpacks for Brain Study

Uncategorized
A dragonfly snatching a meal in midair is nothing short of an aerial dogfight. First, it must predict the trajectory of its prey, maneuver a course of intersection and make split-second adaptations to outwit evasive mosquitoes or fruit flies. All this rapid-fire multitasking takes some serious neurological circuitry — the kind scientists are so interested in, they've designed a tiny dragonfly backpack to measure its brain activity. Created by Anthony Leonardo, a neuroscientist at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), the backpack weighs about as much as a couple grains of salt — around 40 milligrams — and compromises just 10% of the dragonfly's body weight. Neurological electric activity is captured by electrodes inserted into the dragonfly's brain and body, on which a small compute

The Volunteer Group Hunting Down The Missing People Police Couldn’t Find

It’s very hard to imagine – especially in a world of mobile phones and constant social media posts – just how someone can go missing forever. But people do vanish all the time, and in Britain alone, almost 275,000 people are reported missing every year. In fact, one person goes missing in the UK every two minutes. What’s even scarier is that police, driven by lack of evidence, are often forced to close cases down unresolved, meaning that thousands of people’s disappearances remain a mystery. Nicholas Hoult and Charlize Theron’s latest movie, ‘Dark Places’, focuses on a group of amateur investigators called ‘The Kill Club’ who, curious about cold cases, meet up to try and fill in the gaps that the police left behind. The reality, however, is that in the hyper-competitive world of Google AdWords and Bing Ads, not everyone can survive. It's actually beyond survival of the fittest, because there are scenarios where even a fit company can't survive here. (In case you haven’t seen Team America, and have just clicked on this article because of your overwhelming love for Matt Damon, let’s just say that he isn’t exactly portrayed as somebody who’d know the word “bewildered”…) In a Reddit AMA, Matt said: “I was always kind of bewildered by Team America, I think because its hard for us to understand what our images are in public, I think were not good judges of that, and when I saw myself on screen just only able to say my own name and not really that well, I kind of wondered ‘Wow, is that ...

These Survivalists Believe The ‘End Of The World’ Is Coming, And They’re Ready For It

In the event that this actually happens, we’d probably admittedly just die. We’re not really equipped to deal with a lawless world, and we’d likelyfall at the first hurdle. Come this apocalypse, however, there are certain people who are going to flourish. Because they’ve been preparing. Convinced that the ‘end of the world’ is nigh, these survivalists, or ‘preppers’ are prepared for anything. Be it an ebola outbreak that wipes out the government, a financial crash that brings society to its knees, or a nuclear attack thatdestroys basically everything, they have the skills and the suppliesto survive. The way they see it, when things start to go south, you have two options. You can either ‘bug in’ – seal yourself in your hous...

Stephen Hawking Has Beautiful Advice For Those Suffering With Depression

Uncategorized
It turns out that renownedscientist Stephen Hawking isn’t just ridiculously, ridiculously intelligent – he’s also thoughtful and sweet. The 74-year-old made a poetic comparisonbetween depression and a blackhole, saying that no matter how dark they seem, neither are impossible to escape. Hawking said: The message of this lecture is that black holes ain’t as black as they are painted. They are not the eternal prisons they were once thought. Things can get out of a black hole both on the outside and possibly to another universe. So if you feel you are in a black hole, don’t give up there’s a way out. He gave the speech in front of a crowd of over 400 people in January as part of the Reith lecture at the Royal Institute in London, but it is being talk...

An unmanned Japanese spaceship soared into orbit from an island launch site Friday (July 20), beginning a weeklong journey to deliver vital supplies to astronauts living on the International Space Station. The H-2 Transfer Vehicle-3 (HTV-3), nicknamed Kounotori 3 (Japanese for "White Stork 3"), is delivering student science projects, a new camera system, as well as food and spare equipment. It is due to arrive at the orbiting laboratory in about a week. Kounotori 3 lifted off atop a Japanese H-2B rocket at 10:06 p.m. EDT (0206 GMT Saturday, or 11:06 a.m. Japan time Saturday) from the Tanegashima Space Center in southern Japan. It is the third of its kind to fly, following the flights of HTVs 1 and 2 in September 2009 and January 2011, respectively.  On July 27, the spaceship will fly to w

There’s a Park in Austria That Disappears Underwater Every Spring and It’s Mind-Blowing

Uncategorized
This is Grüner See, or Green Lake, found just below the snow-capped Hochschwab mountains in Austria. This county park is a popular stop off for outdoor enthusiasts to hike, camp or picnic, but when the temperatures rise in the spring, the ice and snow on the mountaintops melts, running down into the basin below. The incredible phenomenon literally swallows up the entire park, leaving it underwater. In the photos , taken by Marc Henauer, you can see the pathways, trees, benches and bridges submerged beneath a sheet of emerald green water.  “Underwater, we feel a magical world. The sun creates fantastic light rays through water. Then you think it is a dream and you expect to see goblins appear,” says Henauer.  The brilliant event only lasts for about three to four weeks during the spri

Imagine a dystopic world where people wander the streets in constant search of happiness. They’re all oblivious to the world around them as theywilfullytake an abnormaldrug to get by, and those who dareto see the truth are shunned and villainised… doesn’t seem that hard actually. We Happy Few is an indie game set in a 1960s British dystopia. In this world, everyone is required to take the drug known as ‘Joy’ as, once ingested, their reality is altered, they forget something awful that happened in the past and unlimited “happiness” is granted. It takes a horror-thriller slant as you play first person in a setting that looks like it was lifted straight out of Alice in Wonderland mixed with Bioshock. Take a look at the trippy and slightly terri...

Brexit Has Made David Attenborough ‘Sad’

British national treasure and wildlife enthusiast David Attenborough has admitted that he is saddened by the results of the EU Referendum – though not for the reasons you think. In true Attenborough form, he really is just thinking of the animals. Sir David, aged 90, was not vocal about which wayhe would votebefore the referendum. But after the results were released, he revealed to the Guardian that he was saddened by the potential impact on wildlife. That is sad. Swallows arent members of the union, and migrant birds and so on, he said. One just hopes that collaboration on these issues, conservation issues, will transcend political divisions, Environmentalists have warnedthat Brexit could threaten green regulations guaranteed by EU laws. The Arkyd is set to be launched around 2015, on a mission of hunting for viable asteroids to mine for trillions of dollars in minerals; it already had funding for the launch part. The Kickstarter campaign opens the telescope up to the public to point wherever they want (except right at the sun) and to load pictures on the onboard screen. (See Grumpy ...

We all remember our first acid trip. I mean… not me. I once forgot I had already put a sugar in my tea and put another one in – that was pretty wild. But enough about my New Years Eve. Remember when Shia LaBeouf, in a shock move that no-one saw coming, did some drugs. Specifically, acid. It was apparently in preparation for his film,The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman, in which people were tripping on acid. To top it all off, ol’ shy Shia decided he’d live tweet the whole affair. It’s like what Twitter was made for… 3:15 AM 7 Aug 12 OK everybody here goes nothing. Im gonna light a cigarette. Police Are Hunting For A Teacher Who Got Pregnant By Her 13-Year-Old Student

Uncategorized
I don’t really feel like I should have to point this out, but one of the key rules of being a teacher is to make sure you don’t have any kind of intimate relationship with your students. You’d think it’d be a pretty easy rule to abide by, but judging by the news it sadly doesn’t seem to be… 24-year-old teacher Alexandria Vera is currently on the run from police, after admitting to a relationship she had with a 13-year-old student. The student, who she taught English at a school in Houston, Texas, had originally communicated with her via Instagram. After exchanging messages on social media, they then swapped numbers and agreed to meet up. After meeting up and kissing in her car, she drove to the boy’s house the following day and engaged in s...

The Reason This Isolated Tribe Are So Aggressive Towards Outside Contact

Living in a world filled with modern technology, it can be difficult to imagine what life was like beforeit all came about. And we don’t just mean before the invention of iPads. Incredibly, there are still people who live in a ‘Stone Age’ society. Isolated, usually in thick jungle or on a remote island, these tribes are completely unaware that the world has modernised without them. Although scientists often try to study these‘uncontacted tribes’ – as a window into our own past – attempts to approach them canend in disaster. Take, for example, the Sentinelese people. They hadlived without any influence from the outside world for over 60,000 years, beforethey werediscovered by colonisers in 1879. Seeing them as dangerous, these invaders captured two...

Pokémon Go Players Come Across People Having Sex In Park – Carry On Playing

Uncategorized
For a while it seemed like Pokmon Go was here to stay. I was preparing to get married at a lucrative Pokstop to keep the guests happy in 60 years (if I’m lucky). Me and the wife were going to go on a walking trip for our honeymoon so we could hatch our eggs… I even learned how to type ‘’ quickly so I wouldn’t have to type ‘Pok’, then ctrl+v an acute e that I had copied later, then ‘mon’ because I had to write so many articles about it! But, from what I can tell from my very small friendship group, the hype is pretty much over and only Sam from videos and my sister are still consistently playing it. The only mileage we get from it now is when the few people who still bother to play it come across something untoward when they’re...

Expert Predicts That Man Will Be Hunted For Sport By The Super Rich In The Future

Every now and then, when my friends and I are at the pub, conversation rolls on to what we’d arrange for each other’s stag-dos. It’s all pretty samey, really. Head over to Eastern Europe, maybe a bit of paint ball, boozy lunch, kill a man for sport, go clubbing or something. You know, normal stuff. But how logistically likely is that, really? Getting to Eastern Europe will be a tad more hassle if we leave the EU so that’s not great, paintball’s easy enough, boozy lunch is good too but you don’t want to overdo it if you’re going out clubbing too and then there’s killing men for sport – not currently legal. But as an expert has it, we may not be waiting that long (in the grand scheme of time) for that to become a viable, albeit too...
