Don’t Know How To Get A Fire Going? Here’s The Ultimate How-To.

When I was a Girl Scout, they didn't teach us how to build a campfire. Back then, I thought it was pretty normal, but now, I can't help but wonder why we didn't get to learn the useful survival skill while our male counterparts did. Regardless, to this day, I am a bit intimidated when asked to gather tinder and kindling for a campfire. What's the difference? How much do I need? And don't even get me started on how you go about assembling all that stuff...Thankfully, sites like ScoutmasterCG exist to help people like me out! Here's everything you need to know to get a fire going from scratch in the woods. ScoutmasterCG If you're more into videos, though, this tutorial should help you out! S...

Even Different Species Of Coral Fight Each Other…The Animal Kingdom Is Brutal

It's no secret that the animal kingdom is harsh. When it comes to survival, most non-human animals have to kill or be killed. When we think of animals competing for food and breeding rights, we typically envision beasts like lions and sharks duking it out. As it turns out, however, the same aggression extends itself across the animal kingdom, and it affects even the most innocent creatures, like coral. We often forget that coral reefs are made up of living beings, and like all other animals, they must fight for space and resources. When breathing room is sparse, things start getting intense. Darwin's "survival of the fittest" is an axiom that affects almost every species, as you can see in the video below. Sadly, we will probably never know which piece of coral from this footage came...

One of the best parts of living in a big city is taking in the skyline. There's just something so breathtaking about looking up from the ground at all the beautiful buildings or better yet, looking out from the roof of one of them. And when it comes to working in a big city, there's a very small chance that you'll work on the ground floor. Like it or not, elevators are part of almost every city dweller's reality. While on average just 27 people die in elevator related incidents each year, the slight chance drives some people to suck it up and take the stairs. But if things do somehow take a turn for the worse, we've got you covered. Here's everything you need to know if you ever find yourself in a free-falling elevator. Contrary to popular belie...

After letting out a yelp, the Clovis man said his first thought was treating his dangling leg and protruding bone to boost his chances of making it out alive. I cannot stress this enough. Whistles are a good idea for everyone, but anyone under 13 NEEDS one. There are endless stories of children that get lost on family camping trips, and too many end in death or serious injury. In almost all of these cases, a whistle could have easily prevented these outcomes.A woman in one of our classes actually timed this because she didn't believe it would work. Many recommend keeping them in ziplock bags, but those tear easily. I suggest old film canisters if you can find them. They're watertight and durable. We are VERY cautious about giving instruction on edible plants because it's so easy to make a dangerous mistake. Learn five or so local plants REALLY well as opposed to trying to learn a hundred you won't be sure about. If you want to...

It was the week before Christmas, and my sister and I were fighting off crowds to get to our seats at “Elf: The Musical.” Seeing as “Elf” is one of my favorite holiday movies of all time, I was pretty excited. But as my butt settled into theripped cushion, I noticed a young couple sitting in front of us. They must have just gotten married because they were eating each other’s faces instead of the Skittles in their hands. From the moment I saw them, I knew they’d be PDA-ing their way through the entire evening. And they did. As I watched Buddy the Elf make his way through the faux Lincoln Tunnel to find his father — all while trying not to stare at Romeo and f*cking Juliet — I couldnt help but wonder what it would be like to see the movie wi...

Twitter Rob Konrad played in the NFL as a fullback for the Miami Dolphins from 1999 to 2004. But, his biggest feat came recently in the form of survival when he swam nine miles after falling off his boat. According to ESPN, Konrad was fishing alone off the coast of South Florida when he plunged overboard. With his 36-foot boat on autopilot, he had no choice but to make the journey back to shore on his own. Friends started to worry when he didn’t return home for dinner and Coast Guard deployed a helicopter to search for him. Konrad was found on the beach at 4:40 am and was treated for hypothermia; he has since been released. While Rob has not yet made a statement, one thing is for certain: Five years in the NFL prepares you for situations like these. Read more: h

Here’s a story seemingly straight out of a Hollywood movie. An Alaskan man named Craig Johnson survived for three days after being stranded in the remote Alaskan wilderness. Johnson was making an 80-mile journey by snowmobile to see his family for Christmas when his vehicle broke through the ice. He was able to climb out of the freezing water, but his snowmobile sank. He was then stuck in the harsh, unforgiving tundra as temperatures sank to excruciatingly cold temperatures. After wandering through the cold, Johnson came upon a small wooden box which he used for shelter. To make matters even worse, Johnson was also stalked by a wolverine. He only had a stick to fend off the wild beast. Rescue helicopters were sent out to locate Johnson, but they repeatedly flew over him

The views expressed are those of the author and are not necessarily those of IFLScience. When I started my Ph.D. in 1973 as a recent zoology graduate, I never imagined that forty years later I’d still be working on the same project. On one level, I can imagine you thinking: "He should get out more." But let me explain. My Ph.D. research was to try to understand why Britain’s guillemots were declining. On Skomer Island, Wales—where I did my Ph.D. and where I still study guillemots—there were about 100,000 pairs of guillemots in the 1930s. By the 1970s, this had dropped to just 2,000 pairs.  I started a population study counting the birds, measuring their survival, the timing of breeding, their breeding success and what they feed their chicks.
