Late Sleepers Might Be Better Suited To Mars Missions

A study of the natural circadian rhythm, or daily cycle, of animals on Earth has yielded an interesting, separate conclusion, namely about how humans might cope with the shorter days on Mars. According to the researchers, and a piece in The Telegraph, the issue comes down to the Martian day being 37 minutes longer than Earths day. For this reason, they say that people who sleep longer may be more suited to life on the Red Planet than early risers. The paper is published in the Proceedings of National Academy of Sciences, although it should be noted the link to Mars was made separately. In a statement, Professor Andrew Loudon from the University of Manchester, one of the coauthors on the paper, said:The rotation speed of Mars may be within the limits of some peoples internal...

There’s An Important Reason Your Guy Needs Enough Sleep, And It Has To Do With His Sperm

OK, drop what youre doing, and text your boyfriend right now to ask him if he got enough sleep. If he says he didnt, then you need to break the (potentially tragic, depending on how you look at it) news to him: His sperm are dying and theyre doing it quickly. Why exactly is this tragic? WELP, if you want to have a family through natural means in the future, not having enough healthy sperm will make that a difficult. In a recent study, published in, researchers from the Harbin Medical University in China found a pretty strong link between how much sleep men were getting and how healthy (and abundant) their sperm were. For the experiment, researchers separated 981 male participants (all of whom had already developed healthy sleeping patterns) into three different groups: one group going to ...

I always wondered what dying felt like, but then I got a full-time office job. Mystery solved. Obviously, there are some perks to working full-time. Theres the discipline, the fulfillment of being of service to the world and the snacks. Not to mention, theres full health benefits, which youll need because working in an office will ruin your fucking health. Honestly, I love my job, but having to work in an office for eight hours a day isnt great for you for a lot of reasons. Here are all the different things you do at your job that are slowly killing you, and how to prevent that from happening: 1. Sitting at a desk all day Human beings are not built to sit at a desk all day long. We have bodies that can do incredible things, and one episode of American Ninja Warrior will prove it. But afte...
Could Humans Hibernate?

Could Humans Hibernate?

On cold, dark days it is tempting to imagine shutting yourself away until the warmer weather returns. Many animals do just that by entering a state known as torpor, which reduces their bodily functions to a minimum and uses fat stores in their body for energy. Could humans ever hibernate in the same way? Aside from providing a convenient way to avoid winter, one reason to find out might be the advent of long-distance space travel. A journey to our nearest planet Mars would take around eight months using current technology. If we one day hope to visit another star system, even if we could travel at the speed of light, the journey would take years. Being able to go into a state of long-term torpor would make such distances considerably less tedious for the astronauts and cons...

If You Had These Tents, Camping Might Actually Be Fun. Just Maybe.

SCIENCE
Camping can be fun, but it can also be the worst. It doesn't matter how great something is, if it involves bugs, bears, and other things you wouldn't want tearing into your skin, the potential for it to become a disaster is high. With these tents, that potential is still there, but at least you're putting your comfort in danger in style. Some of these are more elaborate than others, but they're all extremely cool. If you don't want to go camping in these, you're crazy (or have access to a bed that's surrounded by four walls and covered by a roof). Check them out! 1.) The Science Of Slumber: How Your Sleep Habits Impact Your Personality

Michelle K. Anderson For some people, the sound of an alarm clock incites murderous rage, and rightfully so. The monotonous beeping has interrupted the sweet peaceful bliss of sleep and signified that it’s time to depart from the pleasant and warm confines of bed. It’s offensive. It’s wrong. Why, oh, why does the day have to begin?! These individuals know why they’re tired. They stayed up too late, most likely binging-watching some show they’ve already seen on Netflix. Or perhaps they are of the artistic persuasion and stayed up late to write, paint or play the guitar. Not everyone is like this; there are actually people out there who enjoy the morning. They revel in the fact that it’s a brand new day. They go to bed early and rise bl...

Not getting enough sleep eventually culminates in a day or two of brain-befuddling wooziness, but its nothing compared to the effects of chronic insomnia. This sleep disorder, caused by certain medicines, negative lifestyle factors, physical illness, or mental health problems, it leads to mental fatigue, muscular exhaustion, double vision, hallucinations, and a weakened immune system. Frighteningly, there is actually something far worse than this: an extremely rare condition that wont let you properly fall asleep ever again. As reported by the Independent, brother and sister Lachlan and Hayley Webb from Queensland, Australia are just two of those afflicted by the hereditary disease, Fatal Familial Insomnia (FFI), something no more than one in 10 million people worldwide are...
