Late Sleepers Might Be Better Suited To Mars Missions

A study of the natural circadian rhythm, or daily cycle, of animals on Earth has yielded an interesting, separate conclusion, namely about how humans might cope with the shorter days on Mars. According to the researchers, and a piece in The Telegraph, the issue comes down to the Martian day being 37 minutes longer than Earths day. For this reason, they say that people who sleep longer may be more suited to life on the Red Planet than early risers. The paper is published in the Proceedings of National Academy of Sciences, although it should be noted the link to Mars was made separately. In a statement, Professor Andrew Loudon from the University of Manchester, one of the coauthors on the paper, said:The rotation speed of Mars may be within the limits of some peoples internal...

How To Survive When Mercury Is In Retrograde, Because It Is Right Now

Doesn’t it seem like Mercury is always in f*cking retrograde? I don’t know about you, but I feel like life provides us with sweet little sweeps of relief, until BAM —it’s retrograde again, and our lives are once again falling apart. So what exactly is Mercury retrograde, you ask?Mercury retrograde is athree-week period in which the planet Mercury appears to be moving backward in motion. “Who cares? What does that have to with ME?” you non-believers are collectively wondering. Because the earth is out of whack, wehuman beings are notorious for experiencing some pretty dire side effects of retrograde, like memory loss, technology glitches, car breakdowns, miscommunications, delays, screwy contracts, breakups and general feelings of being stuck. Sound fami...

Despite claims by NASA and private outfits such as Mars One, we don't have the know-how or funding to send people to the Red Planet, according to many scientists, policy experts, and one outspoken lawmaker. "To say we have put the cart before the horse is an understatement," Rep. Dana Rohrabacher said. View this image › Bryan Versteeg/Mars One Last week, the nonprofit reality-television project Mars One announced its selection of 100 volunteers who may get one-way tickets to Mars. It's only the latest in decades of celebrated Mars colonization projects. And just like all the rest, this one is unlikely to ever happen, experts say. "It looks like a scam," John Logs...

Fungi and Lichens Just Survived 18 Months On The Outside Of The ISS – Which Means They Might Be Able To Survive On Mars Too

Life is a fickle thing, and to understand the potential for life beyond Earthwe continue to test how microorganisms deal with extreme conditions. The latest experiment looked at how fungi and lichens would fare on the Red Planet. European scientists collected fungi from Antarctica, and lichens from the Sierra de Gredos (Spain) and the Alps (Austria), and theysent them tothe International Space Station (ISS) to experienceconditions similar to Mars. After 18 months, the team analyzed the samplesand discovered that more than 60 percentof the cells were intact and with stable DNA. The results indicate that the harsh conditions of Marsmight not bean insurmountable obstacle, andtheseextremophilespecies might survive. The Antarctic fungi were collected in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, ...

Elon Musk Wants To Put 1 Million People On Mars To Guarantee The Future Of Mankind

Elon Musk believes that humanity’s survival is not a guarantee unless we put a million-person colony on Mars. The CEO of SpaceX and Tesla told online magazine Aeon that developing space colonies should be as much of a priority as finding solutions to global problems. He says, I think there is a strong humanitarian argument for making life multi-planetary… in order to safeguard the existence of humanity in the event that something catastrophic were to happen, in which case being poor or having a disease would be irrelevant, because humanity would be extinct. Musk has been selling the potential benefits of space colonization for years, which he says comes from his love of humanity. He says of mankind’s importance, I think we have a duty to maintain the light o

Sending humans to Mars is something that many are hopeful will happen in the next few decades, possibly by the 2040s,according to NASA. But what chance do we have of actually living on Mars permanently one day? In the second episode of the "Further" series(the first one was on aliens), former astronaut Jeffrey Hoffman discusses the possibility of us one day colonizing Mars. If humanity can, some day, establish a presence on more than one planet, weve really increased our chances of longterm survival, he says. Early Martian explorers might face a unique psychological test in being so far from Earth, according to Hoffman. But perhaps they will have a unique goal to turn Mars back into the habitable environment it was once thought to be, with a thick atmosphere and liquid water on the surfa...

Volcanic Plateau Lakes On Mars Might Have Hosted Life

Mars and its potential to harbor life has been a great puzzle for astronomers. Asmissions are being prepared to explore the Red Planet, astronomers want to find landing sites that have the highest probability of hosting life. However, the search for these sites is not easy. Now, researchers from the Planetary Science Institutehave located another promising location in the search for ancient life on Mars. Looking at the area known as Noctis Labyrinthus, they found basins near the volcanic plateau where water once flowedand temperatures might have been high enough for life to develop. Noctis Labyrinthus is a complex rift system on the westernmost side of Valles Marineris, one of the largest canyons in the Solar System. It is located next to a large volcanic plateau, known as ...

Did you know the Sweden Solar System is the largest permanent scale model of the Solar System in the world? The Sun, represented by the Ericsson Globe in Stockholm, is the largest hemispherical building in the world. The inner planets can also be found in Stockholm but the outer planets are situated northward in other cities along the Baltic Sea. The system was started by Nils Brenning and Gösta Gahm and is on the scale of 1:20 million. Let’s start our journey at our Sun and work our way outwards. The prospect of finding life on another planet is certainly a thrilling one. Over the years, scientists have tried to theorize how life started on our own planet in order to predict how life could begin in other habitable planets. In particular, researchers have been interested in microbes living in “extreme” environments since some of these are thought represent some of the oldest forms of life on Earth. These ancient and highly specialized organisms, called “extremophiles”, are thought to be able to grow pretty quickly in harsh conditions and are therefore an attractive candidate for the existence of life on other planets. In line with this, researchers from the University of Arkansas have been investigating extremophilic organisms and exposing them to Mars-like con

NASA's Mars rover Curiosity has delivered the first Martian dirt sample to its onboard chemistry laboratory, testing out gear that forms the scientific heart of the $2.5 billion robot. Curiosity's huge robotic arm dropped a pinch of Red Planet dirt into the rover's Sample Analysis at Mars instrument, or SAM. SAM can detect organic compounds — the carbon-containing building blocks of life as we know it — and is thus key to Curiosity's mission, which seeks to determine if Mars has ever been capable of supporting microbial life. SAM ingested its first soil sample on Nov. 9 at a sandy site the rover team has dubbed Rocknest. The instrument analyzed the dirt over the following two days using mass spectrometry, gas chromatography and laser spectrometry, researchers said. "We received

Stephen Hawking Warns Humanity Could Destroy Itself In The Next 100 Years

Stephen Hawking has warned that humanity is in danger of destroying itself in the next 100 years as we rapidly progress in the realms of science and technology. Speaking to the BBC, he said that while progress was good, it creates new ways things can go wrong. He highlighted nuclear war, global warming, and genetically-engineered viruses as possible harbingersof doom of our own creation. This is not the first time Hawking has warned that we face a self-made disaster; in 2014, he said that artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race. Hawking pointed out that he is ultimately an optimist, and he believes we can overcome the problems that could face humanity. But if the worst were to happen, one way we could ensure the survival of the human race is to have a c...
