There are certain moments in our lives that are too important not to share with the people we love. Singer-songwriter Eric Hutchinson is having one of those moments. Photo by Ralph Arvesen/Flickr. Hutchinson and his band recently embarked on a tour to promote his new album, which he was proud to have independently produced. They are set to perform in Hutchinson's home state of Maryland at Merriweather Post Pavilion, an over 19,000-seat outdoor amphitheater that has hosted some of the most famed musicians in modern history. This is one show Hutchinson doesn't want his family to miss. And he's especially excited for his dad to see him on the historic stage. But getting him there requires more than a VIP pass. Before Hutchinson was big enough to pick up a guitar, his dad was dia...

If you've been online this week, you've probably seen something about the semicolon tattoo. But in case you haven't, here's the short version: It's a tattoo that represents mental health struggles and the importance of suicide prevention. I wrote an article about it earlier this week. When we posted it on Facebook, our readers shared inspiring messages, stories, and words of encouragement for one another, and many also posted pictures of their own semicolon tattoos. I was blown away by the responses and reached out to several of the people who posted their own photos. They were happy to share their tattoos and stories. I was touched by what they told me, and I hope you also find encouragement, hope, and inspiration in their words. Here are their stories. 1. A mom and her dau...

Mieko Rye has been a model for 20 years. And a successful one, at that. Gracing magazine covers andads for major brands, Rye has had what many modelsstrive for:a consistent, accomplished career in the business. Like all models,Rye has made a career that is partially dependent onmainstream approval of her appearance. She has spent the past 20 years acutely aware of what others think of her body, her skin, her hair all of it. Now Rye is battling stage 3 breast cancer. Living with canceris hard and, as we all know, takesa heavy emotional and psychological toll. But the impacts of the disease on one's appearance can also be devastating for any woman, let alone a woman who has maintained financial security and independence based on her beauty. But Rye isn't feeling sorry for herself. ...

7 myths you shouldn’t believe about staying in a mental hospital.

I waited as the elevator ascended at an achingly slow pace. Anxiety filled my body, and I could hardly breathe. When the doors finally opened, I stepped out, clutching my bag, expecting to see a creepy monochromatic clinical space filled with zombies and screaming people being held down by aggressive staff whose sole job was to control patients like caged animals. Instead, I was welcomed by a wall of bright, hand-drawn inspirational quotes and a handful of warm smiles from staff and other patients. I started to breathe again. Maybe this wouldn't be as bad as I thought it would be. Every hospital is different, but the one thing I can attest to after several stays at several different institutions is that psychiatric hospitals are nothing like they are portrayed in movies or on televisi...

Can you imagine fighting crime with fruits and vegetables? Not with some sort of make-believe banana gun. I'm talking about the real thing here! It sounds a little out there, but believe it or not, the tactic worked for one particular Texas town. And that's not the only thing that changed. Over on the East Side of San Antonio, one nonprofit has been re-energizing the community with a back-to-basics approach: gardening. Stephen Lucke started Gardopia Gardens while attending the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) as a way to educate his peers on the relationship between nutrition and poverty. He felt the best way to address those issues was through a community garden where everyone could get involved and grow amazing produce together. Today, the project that started out on a college...

We were trading catcalling and harassment stories. A group of smart, thoughtful, lively, funny women had gathered, as many women do, for a moment of catharsis and commiseration over the ways in which our bodies are taken from us, little by little, with stunning regularity. One womans coworker had asked her out three times, unswayed by her declination. Another waited at a bus stop when a man, unannounced, wrapped his arms around her from behind. Gross, everyone agreed. Me too. The stories gained momentum, building to purging crescendoes of laughter and irritation. This is how we unburden ourselves. This is how we loose tension back into the world that foisted it on us in the first place. When asked about my own experience, I shared something about an acquaintance making a graphic pass at...

Experts were pumped when they realized why Bangladeshi kids started growing taller

How can you measure progress in a developing country? In Bangladesh, you can do it with a yardstick. Over the past 12 years, something incredible happened in Bangladesh: The kids grew taller than usual. It's a discovery that, at first, left many development and nutrition experts scratching their heads. Just how in parts of a country that lead the world in malnutrition and where global grain shortages are rampant are children growing taller than usual? When the experts fit the pieces all together, the results were amazing. Bangladesh's kids grew taller because the country focused on its women. We live in a world where millions of children aren't able to grow as big as they should because of a condition often referred to as stunting. It happens when kids are malnourished and it ha...

Have you seen anyone with a tattoo like this? If not, you may not be looking close enough. They're popping up... ...everywhere. Photos by The Semicolon Tattoo Project. That's right: the semicolon. It's a tattoo that has gained popularity in recent years, but unlike other random or mystifying trends, this one has a serious meaning behind it. (And no, it's not just the mark of a really committed grammar nerd.) My co-worker Parker's photo of her own semicolon tattoo. This mark represents mental health struggles and the importance of suicide prevention. Project Semicolon was born from a social media movement in 2013. They describe themselves as a "movement dedicated to presenting hope and love to those who are struggling with depression, suicide, addictio...

People are always looking for that "one weird trick" that will rocket them to success. Life hacks are up there with cats and reaction GIFs on the list of Things the Internet Loves. Everybody's eager to find that perfect shortcut for living a full, productive life without actually doing anything. There are probably more Super Clever How-To Guides for Being Awesome online than there are people in the world. Which kinda makes sense when you think about it: We still haven't found the One True Way to Do Things Better/Stronger/Faster, so we have to keep hunting for the next best option. (Unless someone has figured it out, and they're just not telling us. In which case, not cool.) But if there's anyone who knows how to get sh*t done, it's comic book writer (and certified BA...

Does some anxiety stem from greater intelligence?

Some people get anxiety and obsess over details. Almost as hard as getting an Oscar. GIF from "Wolf of Wall Street." And we often see it as a sign that there's something broken in our psyches or that we're not dealing with things correctly. And since it's not fun to feel anxious, sometimes we rush to try to find ways to make it go away. Managing anxiety in whatever way you and/or your doctor decide is right for you is important, but if it's not debilitating, consider that some anxiety is normal and healthy. And it can even be a sign of higher intelligence. Yahurdme, Audrey. Higher IQ. GIF from "Breakfast at Tiffany's." In 2014, scientists found correlations between verbal intelligence and stress levels. Why? One of the theories, noted by New York Magazi...

But one day I noticed something that actually gave me pause. It was one of those warm and cuddly "Awww now THIS is why I love New York moments." As I found myself walking through different boroughs of the city, I'd see brightly colored pianos in parks and other what I thought were random outdoor spaces. It turns out that these musical instruments have been sprinkled throughout the communities since 2006. Their piano project, which was highlighted by Nick Dietz in a story for CBSNews.com, was started by Monica Yunus and Camille Zamora. They also happen to be BFFs and successful sopranos themselves. Here's how the magical initiative works. Generous people and organizations from all over New York donate pianos. Once the instruments are inspected and approved to withstand the fun jou...

Dear friends, First of all, let me explain what it feels like to be me, a guy with social anxiety. Picture a scene that fills you with gut-clenching dread. A dark alley at night maybe. The edge of a windy cliff with no railing. A deep ocean, too dark to see whats beneath you. Think about how those scenes make you feel. Thats the same feeling I get in social situations. Having social anxiety disorder means I experience intense, oppressive feelings of dread sometimes even panic just about every time we meet up with our friends or go out to a restaurant. It occasionally even happens when you come over, too. None of that is your fault, obviously. Theres nothing rational about these feelings. I can take steps to fight the dread and Im fighting hard to do that, all the time, even when Im...

On Tuesday, Ben Stiller appeared on "The Howard Stern Show," where the actor revealed that two years ago, he was diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer. Soon after his Howard Stern appearance, the "Zoolander" star published a blog post containing more of the story of his diagnosis, in which he recalls what it was like to hear the word "cancer" in a doctor's office. He describes it as feeling very much like a scene from a movie: "As my new, world-altering doctor spoke about cell cores and Gleason scores, probabilities of survival, incontinence and impotence, why surgery would be good and what kind would make the most sense, his voice literally faded out like every movie or TV show about a guy being told he had cancer ... a classic Walter White moment, except I was me, and no one was f...

Ralph Demicco was sitting in his sporting goods shop one Saturday morning when he noticed a customer who was acting slightly ... off. She was conspicuously overdressed and refused to make eye contact when she came up to the counter and asked to look at a pistol. Demicco asked the woman if she should really be buying a gun and she immediately broke down crying. He told WBUR that he brought her into the back room of the store, where she confided that she was planning to kill herself. He let her stay there and collect herself while he reached out to her doctor. Demicco may have saved a life that day. But he has good reason to be so careful. During one week in 2009, three different people bought guns at different times from Demicco's store. Each of them used the gun they'd bought to take...
