Irradiated Turkey, Thermostabilized Yams: Thanksgiving Dinner in Space

There are many wonderful things about being in space. The views. The floating. The many delightful things you can do with water drops. Etc. You know what's less awesome, though? The food. Sure, you can do a lot of things to space food to make it less space-food-y: You can spice it and sweeten it and try to make it simulate, as much as possible, its Earth-bound counterparts. Ultimately, though, the foodstuffs you're consuming are still desiccated/rehydrated/irradiated/thermostabilized. Which is all compounded by the fact that your taste buds are sort of shot by the whole microgravity thing, anyway. But it's Thanksgiving! And we celebrate Thanksgiving with our feasting! So how will the six people currently living on the International Space Station, among them two Americans, give their thanks...

No matter what country they serve, soldiers around the world need to eat. Each country creates soldier rations based on national food preferences and what kind of technology is available to them. United States MREs (meals ready to eat) often include a warming element that allows them to brew coffee or have hot meals. The common denominator between these meals is that they are packaged to be eaten almost anywhere. (Also, I have an incredibly strong desire to try one of these.) By definition, all food is organic, it just may not have been grown under industry standards, such as Australian Certified Organic (ACO). Most people who choose to eat certified organic do so because they believe it is cleaner and greener, or chemical free. But the most modern cultivated plants are genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and so are precluded from being certified organic. The Australian Organic organisation says thats because there are no long-term studies on human health. Prince Charles has warned that the cultivation of genetically modified (GM) crops is the biggest environmental disaster of all time. Most of these fad diets soon collapse due to their basis on unfounded claims and false advertising. The latest to be dismantled is the Paleo Diet, which is based on the diets of our ancestors from the Paleolithic period, under the belief that their necessary “whole food” diets are superior to our modern diets.
