Xbox Live exclusively debuted British comedy Pulp on Monday — a first for Microsoft's online gaming and entertainment-streaming service. The movie, about a scrappy comic book store owner's encounter with a gang of money-laundering criminals, bypassed a theater premiere or straight-to-DVD debut in favor of the Xbox Live coming out party. Pulp had been screened at several film festivals before its March 4 public debut. Xbox Live's product manager Pav Bhardwaj thinks Pulp is a "great fit" for the service's more than 45 million subscribers. "The film is really well aligned with our audience," Bhardwaj told the Telegraph. "All our audience like that sort and types of film and it's great to support British talent." A description of the film under a YouTube trailer of Pulp describes the fil

When Irrational Games needed to create a distinctive look to promote the female lead in the video game BioShock Infinite, it looked to 3D scanning rather than traditional modeling software. The game's leading lady, Elizabeth Comstock, is one of the most original and engaging digital characters in years, and her realistic appearance in a commercial for the game revealed how effectively the technology can convey facial features and emotions. Elizabeth's in-game design came from a traditional combination of motion-capture for her body and 3D modeling for her face, but Irrational needed a face for Elizabeth in the promotional materials — billboards, print and online ads and even TV spots. As the game neared its release in March, Irrational knew that Elizabeth would have to grab the audience's

Troy Baker wishes people didn't know he was the Joker. The gaming voice actor is playing the next iteration of one of the most iconic supervillains ever in the upcoming Batman: Arkham Origins. The Joker has been played by a swath of actors yet mastered by only a handful. Baker, whose vocal talents have graced two of the biggest games of the year, doesn't want people's impressions of him to affect how they view his Joker. "I don't ever want it to be about me. A friend of mine told me, 'The difference between fame and notoriety is fame is when people know you, and notoriety is when people know your work,'" Baker said during an interview at New York Comic Con. "The first one is not respectable, but the second one is, because that leaves a legacy." Baker's pipes could be notorious. This year, ...

Get your Mother's Day-flavored sci-fi fix in this thrilling short. Aliens have invaded our planet, and they're out to destroy our race. We've all seen this movie before. But in this gritty, surprisingly good sci-fi short, things are actually a little different from what we're used to. In Hybrids, the aliens are the result of a failed government experiment, botched bio-hybrid soldiers who have now turned against their creators. In this 8-minute short by Patrick Kalyn, who's worked on the special effects of blockbusters like Avatar, King Kong and the indie sci-fi masterpiece District 9, these hybrids are hunting for children, whom they believe hold a mysterious "key." Among their victims there's the daughter of a former special forces soldier, played by Daniella Evangelista. Now, she's out ...

Matter of fact it was the worst maritime disaster since WWII, that Italy has had. A Once Glamorous Theater The Costa Concordia sinking was the largest passenger ship that has ever been wrecked, even bigger than The Titanic. The World's End, an apocalyptic sci-fi comedy starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost — both well-known from Shaun of the Dead — has released its first trailer, and it looks like the movie's going to be a wild ride. The premise is quite simple but brilliant: Five 40-something friends aim to recreate a glorious night of drinking and debauchery from their youth, only to discover the people in their hometown have changed — in a very, very bad way. Soon enough, instead of enjoying a pint of beer in a pub, they're mankind's best hope for survival. The plot that sounds like (at least) two crazy comedies rolled into one promises plenty of action, and the trailer delivers. The laughs, on the other hand, are a bit lost in the scuffle, but we're positive there will be plenty when the movie hits the t

Since it was the first time he’d ever been away from home for longer than a night, Liesl knew she would miss her little man the second he walked out the door. “An hour after he left, I missed him,”she said. “By the time I went to bed, I found myself wandering into his bedroom, just to feel close to him.” She began writing him letters each day, anxiously awaiting a response that she was sure would sound something like t...

Muse’s ‘Madness’ Shows Slow-Motion Kiss Amid Riot

"Madness," Muse's first music video for its forthcoming The 2nd Law album, hit YouTube on Wednesday. The subdued video follows a woman as she wanders through a calm, then raucous, atmosphere — at one point stopping amid a slow-motion riot to kiss what appears to be stalkerrific stranger. The intense embrace amid the rioters and police reminds us of this photo from the Vancouver Riots of 2011: Muse's "Madness" comes on the heels of the English rock band's high-profile inclusion in the International Olympic Committee's music video for the London Olympics this summer. That video used Muse's "Survival." The band also performed during the Olympic Closing Ceremony. The Olympic Games have come and gone in two exhilarating and sometimes frustrating weeks. With last night's closing ceremony, the organizers pulled out all the stops in featuring artists and performers such as the Spice Girls, George Michael, One Direction, and the Who. But it was not without flaws, particularly for viewers in the United States. NBC interrupted the tape-delayed primetime broadcast for an hour to debut the new show, "Animal Practice." They also cut some significant parts of the performance, including Ray Davies of the Kinks performing "Waterloo Sunset" and Muse performing "Survival," the official song of the Olympics. In spirit of the closing ceremony, we decided to put together a playlist of the songs we would have liked to see performed or featured. You could think of it a...

It's a case of clever sports memery meets how not to manage your brand's online reputation. A 28-year-old soccer fan has turned michelinguides.com into something completely different from the Michelin Guides recommendations books — and the company is none too happy. The story starts with Englishman Adam Mascall, who saw the domain was available and bought it for just $9, according to a recent Sun report. But his site, unlike the famous French guidebooks, isn't anything about restaurant recommendations or where to find the best flambé. Mascall's take is "Michel in Guides," referencing Michel Platini, a former French soccer star and current head of the Union of European Football Associations. It superimposes Platini's face into a series of situations involving guides — you know, like surv

Livestrong Has a New Champion: Indy 500 Winner ‘Captain America’

Ryan Hunter-Reay celebrates after winning the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday.Image: Jonathan FerreyThe Livestrong Foundation gained a badly needed champion over the weekend when Ryan Hunter-Reay — the hard-charging driver nicknamed “Captain America” — won his first Indianapolis 500 in jaw-dropping fashion. The cancer-patient crusading foundation suffered a huge PR blow in 2012, when founder and board chairman Lance Armstrong resigned after being stripped of his Tour de France victories for doping. The erstwhile Lance Armstrong Foundation rebranded as Livestrong, and said it was “charting a strong, independent course forward,” but the damage was done: Nike cut ties, and the organization was left without a high-profile face. Minus its major superstar, Livestrong’s list of “global envoys” had wh

Dwyane Wade, Kevin Durant Feud on Twitter Over Top 10 Diss

NBA Twitter is the most entertaining Twitter of all sports Twitters. For proof, look no further than one Earl Joseph Smith III. But the latest nugget of NBA Twitter gold comes via a beef between two of the game's biggest stars, Dwyane Wade and Kevin Durant. It started when Durant, one of the sport's nicest guys, dissed Wade in an interview. Sports Illustrated recently released a ranking of the NBA's top 100 players. Durant came in second on that list, Wade eighth, and Durant's buddy and former teammate James Harden came in 11th. Durant, however, told CineSport that Wade should have been replaced in the top 10 by Harden. Wade, a three-time NBA champ who's been slowed by nagging injuries and heavy mileage the past couple of years, took umbrage to this assertion. So he did what any rational...
