Rue Mapp can still remember the moment she fell in love with the great outdoors. "I grew up in an outdoor loving family," recalls Mapp over the phone. "We had a ranch in Northern California." Rue Mapp. All photos courtesy of Outdoor Afro. Mapp's early days were spent walking those California country roads and hopping over to nearby farms filled with grazing cows and pigs. As her love for nature expanded, Rue began to explore more and more remote areas, traveling deeper and further into the incredible landscapes America has to offer. Then, she noticed that not many people of color were doing the same, and she decided to do something about it. Rue started Outdoor Afro a nonprofit network built to connect the African-American community to nature and inspire outdoor leadership. Ini...

Welcome to “A Song of Nice and Fire” Upworthy’s weekly series recapping one of the most brutal shows on TV. Since brutality is not really in our wheelhouse, Eric March has taken it upon himself to dig deep, twist and turn, and squint really hard to see if he can find the light of kindness in all the darkness. He may not always succeed, but by gosh if he won’t try his best. Here’s what he found on this week’s "Game of Thrones." Welp. Image via HBO. All nice things must end. True to form, this season of "Game of Thrones" concluded as all seasons must — with kindness, empathy, and respect. Also, one hilariously brutal murder. But that's not why we're here! Let's get to it. 1. The King's Landing grounds crew does a great job installing the chupp...

Commuting can be soul-crushing: The traffic, the exhaust, the monotony. But there's a better way. A few lucky bus riders in Taipei, Taiwan, are swapping the concrete jungle for the real thing thanks to a innovative art installation on a city bus. Taiwan's "forest bus" offers riders the chance to sit among lilies, orchids, and ferns on moss-covered seats. Florist Alfie Lin and designer Xiao Qing-Yang converted a 20-seater bus into a mobile solarium designed to resemble an imaginary forest. The duo adorned the space with real plants and flowers local to Taipei, making the ride a trip for all of the senses. The bus route rolls past some of Taipei's popular attractions and destinations, so tourists and locals alike will have a chance to experience the project. The installation...

Food is something we all have a connection with and not just because it keeps us alive. Beyond the whole survival thing, food has a deeper meaning to most of us beyond chew, swallow, repeat. It plays a key role in many special occasions, from birthdays to weddings to funerals to political and religious traditions. It serves as a centerpiece, gathering loved ones and strangers around it to feel comfort, energy, and security. No matter whats going on around you, a good meal has the power to make everything feel OK, at least while it's being consumed. As we honor Thanksgiving in the United States with turkey, green bean casserole (Midwest, represent!), and recliners, heres a fun look at how different cultures around the world do something quite similar. Welcome to "A Song of Nice and Fire," Upworthy's weekly "Game of Thrones" recap series. When we decided to recap of the most brutal show on TV, we realized that brutality is not really in our wheelhouse, so we tasked writer Eric March with hunting for the good, kind, wholesome GoT moments like a needle in a haystack. Here's what he found. I see you giving me that side-eye, The Hound. Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO. OK. Let's do this. Frankly, I don't blame you for being skeptical. I was, too, when I first sat down to write about all the nice things that happened in the Season 7 premiere of "Game of Thrones." Hitting the trails this weekend? You might be walking or biking on an abandoned railroad.

Along the Missouri River, there are 26 rambling trails where you can walk or bike through soft marshlands, towering bluffs, pleasing pastures, and thick forests. Those trails make up the Katy Trail State Park the longest public area in the United States that was formerly train tracks. Built on the corridor of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad, there's also quite a bit of history to be found on any outdoor excursion in this state park. Most trails go past restored historic depots and former railroad towns. It's no surprise all 240 miles of this park were added to Rails-to-Trails Conservancy Hall of Fame in 2008. But trails like this weren't always so pleasant. In the 1950s and '60s, there was dramatic decline in train use. By 1966, less than 2% of intercity commuters were using tr...

Pearls are formed when an irritant gets stuck inside the shell. The shiny interior coating of the shell is called nacre or "mother-of-pearl," which coats the tiny object that is trapped. When Philippe Echaroux, a French street artist, heard about how deforestation is affecting the Surui tribe in the Brazilian Amazon, he decided to throw a massive spotlight on it literally. He did this by creating portraits of Surui tribe members, then projecting them in light, using the Amazon as his canvas. He calls this method of painting trees with light Street Art 2.0 because it goes beyond spray-painting a wall; it allows him to put a powerful message anywhere without doing any damage and take it down as quickly as he put it up. Have you ever wondered would be like after the collapse of civilization? Personally, it's something I try not to think about. However, urban explorer and photographer Freaktography isn't like me. For his most recent series, Freaktography grabbed a pair of old-style gas masks and brought his daughter to an abandoned building. googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('VN_PG_DCBP_ATF'); }); There, the two attempted to imagine what life without all the trappings of modern civilization might look like. I'm not a big fan of camping out in the wilderness or sleeping on the ground, but I do love to see new places. One of the best ways to do that in the U.S. is by car. But if you don't want to spend a ton on overnight stays at hotels, camping is the next best bet. That is unless you're as handy as Redditor YouLoseTheGameTony. Friends, family, and good food -- that's all you really need for a fun time. Then again, when it comes to a real party, few things are more universally enjoyed than pizza. But since it's so nice out, you don't want to be running inside to get the 'za out of the oven. Do you ever wonder what the future used to look like? I mean back in the day, before we all walked around with glass bricks in our pockets that contained every piece of information that's ever been available and allowed us to connect with anyone anywhere in the world in real time. What did people from more than 100 years ago think our future might look like? That was the question posed to French commercial artist Jean-Marc Ct in 1899. Ct and his team were commissioned to create a series of cards to commemorate the 1900 world's fair, "Exposition Universelle," in Paris, featuring images of how the world might look in the then-distant future of the year 2000. Sadly, the company that commissioned the project (which was likely either a toy or cigarette manufacturer) went out of business befor...

A quick Google of "Edinburgh ghost stories" yields more than enough reading material to last a lifetime. But today, we're not talking about just any old ghost story, oh no. We're going to explore something possibly even scarier... In 1836, a group of young boys was out hunting for rabbits at a nearby hill known as Arthur's Seat. Over six decades ago, a disabled character starred on a TV show for the very first time. She was a woman and a wheelchair-using attorney, and she starred in "Martinsville, U.S.A." The program, a 15-minute soap opera, featured actress Susan Peters. In the storyline, she had moved back to her hometown of Martinsville, Ohio, to begin her own law practice. Use of the wheelchair unlike later instances, like Robert T. Ironside (a former cop who became a consultant for the San Francisco Police Department after being paralyzed from the waist down after getting shot in the line of duty) wasnt simply a plot device. Peters, who was paralyzed due to a hunting accident just a few years earlier, used a wheelchair both onscreen and off. "Miss Susan," the shows original title, was one of several plann...

I'll be the first to admit that the thought of sleeping in a pickup truck sounds anything but luxurious. In fact, it sounds seriously uncomfortable. Because I don't have an outdoorsy bone in my body, I'm over here like, "Why should I sleep in a truck when hotels are things that exist?" Sure, the linens are questionable at best and continental breakfasts are usually a little weird, but dealing with those sounds better to me than roughing it.
