How Serious Is Inbreeding In Show Dogs?

How Serious Is Inbreeding In Show Dogs?

Uncategorized
A German shepherd with a sloping back that was awarded best of breed brought the dog show Crufts in for this years annual bout of criticism. Viewers took to social media to accuse the owner of animal cruelty by suggesting that its unusual shape meant the dog must suffer health problems brought on by inbreeding something the owner denied. This is a common criticism levelled at dog breeders, but how accurate is it and how widespread is the issue? Breeders of purebred dogs and other animals face a dilemma that reflects a confusion in the minds of those who believe that purebred is good but inbred is bad. Breeders want to produce animals that have certain physical and behavioural characteristics, and so they mate individuals that both carry the desired traits, which often mean...

Dog Catches Fish From Lake

There’s a reason dogs have been so close to humans for thousands of years. They are great hunters, and together, people and dogs are an powerful force in the wild.  This dog isn’t necessarily a hunting dog, just the family pet. But instinct is difficult to suppress, and she caught a fish on her first try when she was out by the lake with her people friends.  She obediently dropped the fist instead of enjoying the meal, only for her human friend to accidently knock it back into the water. Romeo became a famous figure in Juneau, Alaska for being a rare type of wolf who enjoyed playing with local dogs in the winter. They actually have their own tribute for Romeo in Juneau. How did it all come about? It was 2003 and a photographer saw this wild wolf from the back deck of his house. Nick Jans figured it would be a one time sighting, but over the following months, the wolf kept hanging around. It then got to the point where the wolf began playing with one of Jans dogs. This photo above was when the two animals first met after Jans dog Juliet got loose. She stood right up, nose to nose with the wolf as Jan captured the photo, no doubt extremely nervous. “We were keeping our dog under control and she just slipped out from under my fingers, which were hooked around h...

Extinction is a natural process; a typical species used to become extinct within 10 million years of its first appearance, although some species survive with virtually no morphological change for hundreds of millions of years. However, these days, when the planet is bursting at the seams with over 7 billion humans, the species loss is occurring at a rate 1,000 times greater than the natural background rate. Ruthless human expansion, hunting, and the destruction of natural habitats, climate changes, pollution and other factors have caused an incredible number of animals to become extinct. So...

What a horrible headline. But somehow this video of a man boxing a kangaroo went uber-viral, resulting in about five million views within the first two days. Maybe it is because of the backstory to it – or because of the catching headline. Or the Australian accent… “A group of hunters got together to help a young cancer sufferer (terminal diagnosis) with his last wish of catching a 100 kg (220 pound) wild boar with his dogs. One day while hunting one of the highly trained dogs was chasing some pigs by scent and collided with a big buck kangaroo that then held and wrestled the dog by its protective gear (boars have tusks like knives), the owner was horrified that his dog or the kangaroo would get hurt and run in to save both parties.” Read more: https://www.viralvir...

Sometimes in the course of human events, we really really screw things up. Some of those screwups have small consequences. Others almost wipe out entire species. Fortunately, sometimes we also realize what we've done and try to fix it. And even succeed. Here are five times when good conservation saved animals we couldn't imagine our world without and and what we could do to help out right now. 1. That time hand puppets helped save the California condor The California condor has an image problem. It's a giant roadkill-eating vulture with a bald head and a face only another condor could love. So, in grand human tradition, we did our best to get rid of them. After decades of being hunted and losing its habitat, the California condor was at the brink of extinction. By 1982, th...

Man Scares Off Attacking Moose.

For those who have gone camping before, they know what to do if a bear comes in the camp. Group together, raise your hands, and scream. A moose starts to get real close to a man and woman in Sweden when the woman makes the first mistake-she turns her back and runs away. The moose takes this is an invitation of prey and moves forward. But the man raises his iron bar and screams. There’s a short stand off, but finally the moose is scared off. In September 2016 news broke that the giant panda was no longer considered "endangered" and there was much rejoicing. Panda party. Thanks to the incredible conservation efforts of the Chinese government and international groups like the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the species is now classified as "vulnerable." Conservation efforts began back in the 1960s, when four panda reserves were set up in China and hunting the species was outlawed. It's always a victory when a species starts bouncing back from extinction, but here's so much more to these gentle giants than most people even know. Here are 11 other awesome reasons to celebrate the great giant panda: 1. Giant pandas have a bone in their wrists that acts like an opposable thumb. Thought apes were the only ones who coul...

While spiders freak us all out, they typically do a good job of warning us to keep our distance. But unlike scary-looking arachnids, there are some seriously dangerous insects out there that seem perfectly safe until they bite. Take Triatominae insects, for example. Also known as kissing bugs, these critters don't look like much. However, they can transmit a deadly disease that often isn't detected until it's too late. Kissing bugs can be found all over America, with some species in Asia, Africa, and Australia. They like to live in chicken coups and outdoor dog houses as well as under porches, rocks, and cement. Michael Fletcher and his brother Neil were minding their own business hunting grouse in the Canadian wilderness when all of a sudden, Michael spotted what appeared to be a majestic bald eagle sitting in the woods. Being the manly men these brothers surely are, they approached the bird to find out what was going on. To their dismay, the bird had one talon caught in a trap. Michael told Buzzfeed, The bird was pretty calm. It was probably tired from trying to fight the trap. The Fletcher boys quickly sprang to action, covering the bird in one of their coats to help set it free, but, before the boys allowed the bird to fly off into the sunset they had to take one quick, ridiculously epic, selfie. Two subspecies of lions were just added to the government's list of endangered species. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced on Dec. 21 that two subspecies of lion will be granted new federal protections as endangered species. One, found in central-to-western Africa and India, will be listed as endangered. The other, found in eastern-to-southern Africa, will be listed as threatened. But it's actually good news. Image via BBC. This is a way for the U.S. government to put new restrictions around trophy hunting. The government can't regulate what other countries do with their animals. So if countries like Zimbabwe want to let hunts continue, the U.S. can't stop them. But the government can make it less appealing for Americans to participate in the kind of trophy hunts,...

In July 2016, photographer Amos Chapple went to see the mammoth pirates. Chapple has worked extensively in northern Siberia, near the Arctic Circle. In the winter of 2015-16, he was there again on assignment. Then a local contact gave him a tip. The contact said something new was happening in the region a kind of illicit gold rush. With elephant ivory banned, ivory dealers have been turning to mammoth remains instead and paying people to go out and find them. The fascinating way whales experience grief.

The fascinating way whales experience grief.

Uncategorized
We already know that whales and dolphins are pretty intelligent. Photo from NOAA Photo Library/Flickr. Bottlenose dolphins use sponges as protective face masks to probe the sea floor without damaging their snoots. Orca whales have unique teamwork-reliant hunting strategies, like creating waves to wash seals off ice floes. And different orca whale populations seem to have their own distinct cultures too. A new report suggests that those smarts might extend to emotions too. In fact, scientists think that whales and dolphins might mourn and grieve just like humans do. A recent paper in the Journal of Mammalogy documented this apparent mourning behavior in seven species of whale and dolphin, including spinner dolphins, Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins, orca whales, and sperm whale...

Meet The Dog That Hunts Rhino Poachers In Africa

Meet The Dog That Hunts Rhino Poachers In Africa

Uncategorized
Thanks to the ivory trade around the world, the massive rhinoceros is engendered. To try to help combat the illegal hunting of them, the rhinos have been placed under special protections in designated areas. Even so, poachers still come onto the land to take what they want and further intervention was soon necessary. As an end result, teams were put together to guard the areas and the animals themselves. Now, meet Diego – a member of one of those teams that also happens to be man’s best friend. Located in Kenya, and part of the Ol Pejeta Conservatory, it’s part of Diego’s job to help sniff out any poachers attempting to take advantage of these helpless in comparison, animals. This video comes from the incredible dog himself, wearing a GoPro and chasing down a m...

A Whimsical Photographer Finds Magic in the Tiniest Places. So Beautiful.

CULTURE
Vyacheslav Mishchenko, who goes by Slava, really likes mushrooms. After photography, which is his main passion and one inherited from his father, he counts mushrooms as some of his favorite things, and describes himself as an "avid mushroom hunter." Naturally, he decided to combine hs two favorite things in the world and the results are incredible. Using macro photography, Mishchenko captures their miniature, magical world, documenting their often overlooked existence as well as that of their fellow forest dwellers: ladybugs, frogs, dragonflies and especially snails.  Snails also feature regularly in Mishchenko's work, and, like mush...

LIFE
The last stages of life - whether human or animal - are a sad time, but they can be absolutely beautiful too. That's why this post hit me so hard, directly in my heart. Photographer Isa Leshko recently traveled around the country to photograph animals in their final stages of life. “I began the series as a means of exploring my feelings about my mother’s decline due to Alzheimer’s Disease,” she says. “As I’ve worked on this project, though, I’ve come to realize that these images are a testament to survival and endurance.
