Top 10 Fratricidal Baby Animals

Top 10 Fratricidal Baby Animals

Animals
Life in the wild can be so brutal, that sometimes animals are forced to do terrible things to ensure survival. Cannibalism and infanticide are well known in many species, but perhaps the most disturbing cases are those of baby animals killing their siblings, sometimes moments after they are born! This is a list of ten species that start their lives as ruthless fratricides. Like most large birds of prey, Golden Eagles breed rarely, and usually lay only two eggs per nest. Often, one of the eggs hatches with a few days of advantage, and the firstborn chick starts being fed before its sibling is even born. Due to this, the firstborn grows bigger and stronger than the younger chick, and usually wins most squabbles for food. If food is very scarce, the younger chick can eventually become wea...

House hunting is a stressful experience to say the very least. Never mind the actual process of buying when you've found a place you love. Most people take ages just to get to that point. Sure, it's still a buyer's market out there, but that doesn't mean it's easy to find your dream home. Usually, you have to settle or compromise on some fronts. Take, for example, the house in the photos below. It's listed for sale in the town of Spring, Texas. For just $199,999, you get four bedrooms, two full bathrooms, and one half bathroom. Not to mention it's right near the new Grand Parkway, I-45, and Hardy. So what's not to love? Looks like a pretty great home to me, but wait until you get a little closer. HAR.com ...

Japan Banned From Antarctic Whaling

Uncategorized
In a case initiated by Australia the United Nations top court, the International Court of Justice (ICJ), has ruled that Japan must stop its whaling program in the Antarctic.  In 1986 the International Whaling Commision (IWC) moratorium banned commercial whaling, but allowed whaling provided that it was carried out only for research purposes. Japanese fleets have a scientific permit for a quota of up to 935 minke whales, 50 humpback whales and 50 fin whales. The latter are an endangered species. Japan were accused by Australia of exploiting this loophole in order to mask commercial whaling as scientific research; since the IWC moratorium they have killed 10,439 minke whales, according to the International Fund for Animal Welfare. During the hearing, the Australian gove

Williams plays a man who loses custody of his children following a divorce with his wife. Down on his luck, he figures the only way to see his kids on a regular basis is to disguise himself as an elderly British woman and become the kids' nanny. Premise aside, the movie is hilarious. Clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmPrt_gn-eMProbably the least-celebrated of Christopher Nolan's film, Insomnia sees Williams in a serious role, playing a crime writer who gets involved with a dirty cop. Clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5LkYTKPZmIThe perfect vehicle for Williams' irreverent brand of humor (other than #2), he plays a DJ sent over to Vietnam to bring some humor to the Armed Forces Radio. The ‘Friday The 13th’ Prank Makes Every Aspect Of Camping Terrifying

Uncategorized
If last week’s chainsaw massacre scare prank wasn’t enough for you, we’ve got another one to share. This one is inspired by “Friday the 13th,” and while it’s way less gory than the chainsaw prank, it’s equally as frightening. Filmed by YouTube channel Pranks, the video features a man dressed in a Jason Voorhees costume. He hides around in the woods and surprises unsuspecting campers, hikers and fishermen and women, and their reactions to Jason’s sudden arrival are, across the board, hilarious. A few people even jump into a lake to escape him. We’re not entirely sure if this is real — commenters on the video noted that all of the prankees seem to have microphones on them, making it seem possible that the whole thing is staged. Either way, it’s good for a laugh

Top 10 Tips for Surviving a Nuclear Winter

Our World
Nuclear war is not a scenario that most would aspire to live through. In the sixties, the Cuban Missile Crisis brought us dangerously close to the brink – but mankind has so far been fortunate enough not to experience a potential extinction event. Nuclear Winter is in itself a theoretical concept; scientists believe that in the event of nuclear war, vast amounts of soot will be injected into the stratosphere and spread by winds across the planet, blocking out the sun and making the temperature plummet. Crops would wilt and die; animals would soon follow. The collapse of the food chain would lead to the extinction of the human race. Nuclear Winter could last for years, or even decades; and while it exists, any humans who survived the nuclear war will find it impossible to reestablish...

One Fast Cat: A Hamster Exercise Wheel For Cats

Hobbies & Personal Activities
It turns out that an exercise treadmill wheel is a great exercise device not only for hamsters, but also for cats! Inventor Sean Farley and his team in California came up with a giant replica of the hamster wheel designed to entertain bored cats. The device lets our little feline friends spend their days exercising instead of just lying around the house. Called One Fast Cat, the wheel helps the house cats use up their pent-up energy, which would normally be spent hunting. Exercising instead of lying around keeps the cat more lively and energetic all day long. The creators explain on their website that: “in field testing our cat wheel has proven to not only enhance the physical well-being of our cat but altered her disposition to be more relaxed and calm.” Hamsters, rats, c...

Why Are So Many Starving Sea Lion Pups Washing Up On Californian Beaches?

Researchers have been investigating the cause of a recent surge in the number of starving sea lion pups washing up on beaches in California, and claim to have found compelling evidence that declining availability of certain food sources is driving this tragic phenomenon. However, the reasons behind this shift in the composition of local prey species are likely to be varied and complex, making it difficult to predict how long the trend will continue or devise strategies to alleviate the situation. Over the first half of 2015, more than 3,000 undernourished baby sea lions were found stranded along the Californian coastline a figure that is more than 15 times higher than the normal rate. But while water can do some amazing things, it can't stand up and protect itself from things like massive oil spills or other man-made damages to its regulatory systems. Mostly it just lays there, passively sloshing back and forth, and oh yeah, cultivating an incredible ecosystem for millions of amazing creatures. While painkillers are effective at blocking specific channels, we know very little about how to control certain sorts of pain. In particular, we are generally much better at treating acute pain caused by a sudden injury than chronic neuropathic pain from sources such as diabetes, cancer or MS. This change makes the plant more attractive as feeding and breeding grounds for insects called leafhoppers, and after the bugs eat the plants, the bacteria hitch a ride in their saliva and on to the next plant.    Pathogens that rely on more than one host to complete their life cycle often modify the behavior and development of each, coercing them into improving the parasite's survival and reproduction. These sorts of parasitic mind control take all kinds of forms: from sexually-transmitted viruses that sterilize crickets but leaves them horny to liver flukes that compel ants to climb a blade of grass into a cow’s mouth. Fascinating, yes, but t

This is what a goblin shark looks like when it takes a bite. Science Channel This creepy-looking goblin shark almost manages to take the hammerhead's award of weirdest looking shark to swim the ocean. Goblin sightings aren’t all that common; they’ve been observed along the coast of Japan, the Pacific Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, but these fish like to live in deep water and are normally found close to the ocean floor, so they're rarely seen Vanessa Jordan from the Florida Natural History museum explains that the shark uses electro detection to find its prey, and once located its jaw is thrust forward out of its mouth using a double set of ligaments at the mandibular joints. Whilst swimming it holds its jaws tightly and uses its jaw as a ty

Many humans use elaborate hand gestures in order to supplement their verbal communications. New research has found that chimpanzees, our closest living relatives, are capable of gesturing to one another to indicate the presence of food. The research was led by Anna Ilona Roberts of the University of Chester and was published in the journal Nature Communications.  Two chimpanzees, a female named Panzee and a male named Sherman, are trained in language. They were tested on their ability to communicate the location of food while working with a human researcher. Food was hidden from the human in a large, outdoor space while the chimps saw where it was placed. The chimps helped guide the researcher toward the food by pointing to its location.  Because the testing area was

10 Trivial Incidents That Drastically Changed America

History
As the 16th century dawned, the New World was revealed as a place of vast possibility for the nations of Europe. Over the following centuries, many trivial, silly, or downright bizarre events ended up carving out a distinctive place—our modern-day United States. 10American Militiamen Are Terrified Of Fireworks And Washington Burns Down It seems a little silly today, considering that the reckless detonation of colorful explosives has become an American tradition, but it’s true. What we now use to celebrate our independence once scared away all the soldiers defending Washington, and the nation’s capital was burned to the ground. Following the burning of York (present-day Toronto) by American soldiers in the War of 1812, the British launched a surprise attack on America’s political he

Mangroves are some of the worlds most important trees. They provide food and resources for people and animals, protect coasts, and store huge amounts of carbon. The worlds largest mangrove forest - the Sundarbans in the Bay of Bengal - supports millions of livelihoods. In terms of the services they provide, they are worth nearly US$200,000 per hectare per year. But these coastal forests are threatened by rising seas and human development. In a study published today in Nature, we show that some of these forests will drown unless we help them. Catherine Lovelock explains her new mangrove study Getting To The Root Of It All Mangroves grow along tropical coasts. Scientists recently discovered that a certain plant, Helianthemum squamatum, is able to extract up to 90% of its fluid requirements from crystallization water trapped in gypsum rock. It is currently the only known plant species able to do this and the finding represents a completely new kind of water source for life. The research was published on August 18 in Nature Communications. The team of researchers, led by plant biologists Dr. Sara Palacio of the Instituto Pirenaico de Ecología in Spain and Dr. Juan Pedro Ferrio of the University of Lleida, exploited the different isotopic compositions of hydrogen and oxygen between gypsum water and free soil water. By examining the isotopic composition of the sap water of H. squamatum, the researchers could then infer what pr

WATCH: Lion Takes Absolutely BRUTAL Revenge On Big Game Hunger!

For true animal lovers everywhere, this is sweet revenge. Humans who kill for no reason other than to inflate their own egos and have a photo op of their cowardly conquests are considered some of the lowest forms of life by many animal lovers. The rationalization of trophy hunting is a pathetic excuse at egotistical man and woman practicing dominance over helpless species. Well things came full circle for this trophy hunter and her cowardly, and incompetent, guide as they gloat over their kill. Little did they know the lion they killed had some backup, and this big boy aint going to let them get away with their deadly arrogance. The American woman and her idiot South African poacher who is adjusting the camera for the cowardly photo op, both end up getting their asses handed to them by an...

http://twitter.com/#!/CuffyMeh/status/384722036171358208 Well, we’re screwed. At least according to comedian (and former host at the wildly successful Current TV) John Fugelsang. As the possibility of a government shutdown looms, Fugelsang wants to make sure we all understand what it would mean for us: http://twitter.com/#!/JohnFugelsang/status/384719838096408577 Slavereh! Or something. Helpful conservatives attempted to give Fugelsang a much-needed history lesson: http://twitter.com/#!/jacobperry/status/384722492755308545 http://twitter.com/#!/TinPotDickTator/status/384724418917724160 But John just wasn’t interested: http://twitter.com/#!/JohnFugelsang/status/384726621078712320 Oh dear. The truth is hard. Much too hard to explain to militant lefties like Fugelsang. So instead,...

Im already completely hyped for fall. The second the clock strikes midnight on September 1, its like I shed my summer skin, forget about bikinis and weekend trips down the shore and trade my flip flops for Ugg boots. My apartmentdooris already adorning myautumn wreath, a pumpkin spice candle fragrances my kitchen, mums are decorated on the front porch, and Ive already enjoyed three #PSL in high anticipation for whenever Starbucks is going to be releasing my fall favorite, Salted Caramel Mocha. Yes, the second September 1happens, it doesnt matter if its still 93 degrees outside my window because Im sipping that basic girl coffee and belting out the lyrics to A Thousand Miles as I make my way downtown, walking fast with faces passing bybecause Im homebound. Yet, there are SO many people who...

Brazilian Vampire Bats Are Now Feasting On Human Blood

Uncategorized
A species of vampire bat that was thought to feed only on birds has developed a taste for human blood, according to a report published recently in the journal Acta Chiropterologica. The discovery raises some major health concerns, as the bats are known to carry rabies. Three different species of vampire bat are known to rely exclusively on blood for their diet. Of these, Desmodus rotundus and Diaemus youngi are considered to be relatively unfussy eaters, and will slurp from the veinsof many different types of animal. Diphylla ecaudata, on the other hand, has a rather more particular palate, and had until now been thought to feed only on the fat-laden blood of wild birds, while shunning protein-rich mammalian blood. Yet when researchers analyzed the DNA in the poop of D. ecaudata in Catimb...

Highest Altitude Ice Age Settlement Found in the Peruvian Andes

Highest Altitude Ice Age Settlement Found in the Peruvian Andes

Uncategorized
Working in the southern Peruvian Andes about 4,500 meters above sea level, researchers have uncovered the oldest, extreme altitude human settlements in the Americas. The two hunter-gatherer sites—a base camp and a workshop—are the highest Ice Age human habitats known in the world. The findings, published in Science this week, suggests that humans adapted to high-elevation environments a millennium earlier than we thought.  How humans settled in potentially hazardous areas with low oxygen, high solar radiation, and freezing temperatures is poorly understood. Some say glaciers had to recede to create an opening for humans to migrate through. Others say it took many thousands of years for humans to become genetically capable: high metabolic rates, large lung capacities,
