In April, the Mars One program announced it was in search of four people willing to travel to Mars and establish the first human colony in outer space. The lucky candidates will spend seven years training for the mission before leaving Earth in 2023, never to return. After the settlers are established on the Red Planet, more settlers and cargo will be sent up every two years. The application deadline is Aug. 31, and so far over 100,000 have applied. BuzzFeed interviewed 13 of them via email about why they hope to be chosen. Amulya Nidhi Rastogi, 20: “This is my purpose in life.”

Guard Crabs Defend Coral Reefs from Predatory Sea Star Army

Embattled coral reefs in French Polynesia have found a colorful ally in crabs. In exchange for shelter and secreted nutrients, different species of coral guard-crabs fiercely defend their coral hosts against corallivores ranging in size (and voraciousness) from giant predaceous starfish to small sea snails. The work was published in PeerJ this week. Crown-of-thorns sea stars (Acanthaster planci), which grow to the size of trashcan lids, can threaten entire reef communities. After inverting its stomach, the sea star drapes it over a coral and secretes digestive enzymes that dissolve the coral tissue, which is then absorbed by the stomach. But if the coral is housing guard-crabs from the genus Trapezia, they’ll emerge to pinch, shake, and nip off the sea star’s tube-li

Photographer Joins Illegal Mammoth Tusk Hunt In Siberia, Captures How They Get Rich, Get Drunk And Nearly Die

In Russia’s isolated and remote region of Siberia, an underground economic boom is taking shape. Radio Free Europe photographer Amos Chapple, back in 2016, went inside the dark world of the Russian men illegally mining for tusks and remains of the long-extinct woolly mammoth, in hopes of cashing in on black market trade. The images he captured show a compelling cycle of toil, desperation, and environmental consequence. Woolly mammoths, lost arctic relatives of the modern elephant, are thought to have lived in Siberia about 400,000 years ago. The area now experiences year-round permafrost, a thick layer of ice beneath the ground, which has helped to preserve submerged mammoth skeletons for millennia. In order to reach the buried treasures of this hostile land, the men seeking it have...

Over the years, Bette Midler’s music has often been dismissed for being too schmaltzy or because she tends to go way, way old school with her cover choices, and while the former might be relative, as to the latter, she tackled the Rosemary Clooney songbook in 2003, then followed it in 2005 by covering the Peggy Lee songbook. Not that there’s anything wrong with tackling standards, but there was a time not so long ago when Midler was turning in versions of some pretty awesome contemporary tunes. 1. 1. 10 Beautiful Examples of Symmetry In Nature

For centuries, symmetry has remained a subject that’s fascinated philosophers, astronomers, mathematicians, artists, architects, and physicists. The ancient Greeks were downright obsessed with it—and even today we tend to side with symmetry in everything from planning our furniture layout to styling our hair. No one’s sure why it’s such an ever-present property, or why the mathematics behind it seem to permeate everything around us—but the ten examples below prove that it’s definitely there. Just be warned: once you’re aware of it, you’ll likely have an uncontrollable urge to look for symmetry in everything you see. It doesn’t matter what the color of your skin is or where you were born. It doesn’t matter if you’re rich, poor, young, elderly, sick, healthy, or unique. Everyone in the world holds an inherent set of instinctive behaviors. Some of the behaviors include a collection of reflexes. Scientists continue to examine the purpose of these instincts and develop hypotheses on their function. Many of the instincts remain an evolutionary mystery. For this article I have focused on reflexes in adults and left out the common primitive reflexes. A primitive reflex is displayed by normal human infants and not neurologically intact adults. Some examples include the Palmar grasp reflex, which is the tendency for babies to close their hand around anything that strokes the palm. Th...

Tardigrade Revived After Being Frozen For More Than 30 Years

Uncategorized
Scientists have reported that they were able to revive a tardigrade after it had remained frozen for more than 30 years. The research is described in the journal Cryobiology. Tardigrades, also called water bears, are known as extremophiles, which means they can inhabit a vast range of harsh environments. They are tiny microscopic invertebrates, typically less than a millimeter in length, with four pairs of legs and claws. But despite their widespread habitability, much is still unknown about them. In this research, the scientists described how two frozen tardigrades, Acutuncus antarcticus, and an egg were found on a moss sample from Showa Station in Antarctica in November 1983. The tardigrades were then stored at a laboratory in Japan at a temperature of -20C (-4F), reported...

Grizzly bears that inhabit the wilderness of Yellowstone National Park may now want to tread carefully if they ever leave the reserve's boundaries. The decision wasannounced by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, who say their numbershave recovered to such an extentthat they are migrating out of the immediate vicinity of the reserve, and so should now be controlled. It means that while hunting of the bears within Yellowstone National Park remains illegal, there will be limited bear hunts permitted in the surrounding states. Inone of the most iconic scenes in Jurassic Park, Ellie Sattler and Ian Malcolm cling on to a Jeep as they are chased by afearsome Tyrannosaurus rex. But would a T. rex really be able to outrun a Jeep as it raced down a jungle path? Probably not, new research suggests. The size and weight of the massive predator means the T. rex would not have been able to run. Rather than clocking up speeds that could outpace a car, the beasts likely onlyreached walking speeds of around 5 meters per second (18 kph/11 mph), meaning that even on foot, a human may have been able to outrun it. The paper, published in PeerJ, suggests that any higher speed would have simply buckled the animal's legs. The running ability of T. rex and other similarly giant dinosaurs has been...

Climate Pressures Favor Seal Moms With Higher Genetic Variation

Uncategorized
Rising temperatures are causing declines in Antarctic fur seal populations, but according to a study published in Nature this week, their genetic diversity seems to be increasing. By itself, this diversity isn’t an evolutionary response -- since it can’t be passed down -- but maintaining higher levels of genetic variation offers a better chance of evolutionary adaptation later on, which will hopefully buffer the impacts of long-term climate change.  Antarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus gazella) were almost hunted to extinction in the 19th century, but their numbers began to recover when these sealing operations ceased. However, in the past three decades, climate warming has been cutting down the availability of krill, an important part of the fur seal diet. Climate cha

10 Engrossing Facts About Cannibalism

10 Engrossing Facts About Cannibalism

Creepy
Evidence says our ancestors had cannibalistic tendencies as far back as 800,000 years ago. They had good reason to—the average human adult provides 30 kilograms (66 lb) of food, including fat, muscle, organs, and skin. There’s no question that our society condemns cannibalism, but reports say the practice continues in some places even today. 10The Taste Of Long Pig Most cannibals say human meat tastes porky, sweet, or very much like veal but looks a lot like beef. Probably one of the best people to ask is Armin Meiwes, the famous German cannibal who killed a seemingly willing participant and ate up to 20 kilograms (44 lb) of his flesh. During an interview from his prison cell, he described human flesh as tasting like pork “but a little bit more bitter, stronger. It tastes quite good

Infected Zombie Beetles Encourage Males To Have Sex With Their Corpses

Turning your host into a zombie that encourages males to have sex with its corpse may sound like an odd way to ensure your survival, but that is exactly what a parasitic fungus in the United States does. It turns out that female goldenrod soldier beetles, when infected with the fungus Eryniopsis lampyridarum, do everything possible to encourage males to have sex with their dead bodies. Usually found feeding on the tops of flowers in meadows and fields across North America, the researchers analyzed over 400 live and dead goldenrod soldier beetles, and found that around 20 percent of the insects were infected with the fungus. Weirdly, many of the dead infected females were displaying the same unusual pose. After making the beetles climb to the tops of th...

Welcome to "A Song of Nice and Fire," Upworthy's weekly "Game of Thrones" recap series. When we decided to recap of the most brutal show on TV, we realized that brutality is not really in our wheelhouse, so we tasked writer Eric March with hunting for the good, kind, wholesome GoT moments like a needle in a haystack. Here's what he found. I see you giving me that side-eye, The Hound. Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO. OK. Let's do this. Frankly, I don't blame you for being skeptical. I was, too, when I first sat down to write about all the nice things that happened in the Season 7 premiere of "Game of Thrones." Everything about it seemed impossible (other than coming up with a snazzy, punny series title). Trying to find lovingkindness in a show known for epic backstabbing, front-stabbing, and ...

Astronomers Have Solved The Mystery Of ‘Strange Signals’ That Appeared To Come From A Star 11 Light-years Away

Uncategorized
Astronomers who detected "strange signals" that appeared to come from a small, dim star have finally gotten to the bottom of the mystery. Researchers first picked up what they now call the "Weird!" signal on May 12 using the Arecibo Observatory, a huge radio telescope built inside of a Puerto Rican sinkhole. (It's famous for appearing in the alien sci-fi movie "Contact".) The signals appeared to come from Ross 128, a red dwarf star located about 11 light-years from Earth. The star is about 2,800 times dimmer than the sun and not yet known to have any planets. Abel Mndez, an astrobiologist at the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo, told Business Insider on July 14 that the star was observed for 10 minutes, during which time the signal was picked up an...

Back in February, before his successful election as the President of the French Republican, Emmanuel Macron had a message for Americans beleaguered federal scientists: come to France. Eventually, details emerged of a program, mischievously entitled Make Our Planet Great Again, that set aside $69 million and four-year-long research grants for climate scientists that took their work across the Atlantic. As it turns out, that scientist-snatching initiative was wildly successful. Launched on June 8, the last six weeks have seen hundreds upon hundreds of applications flood in, many of which feature researchers currently living and working in the US. Although many of these applications are for short-term research ventures, 154 of them are specifically for lo...

Along the Missouri River, there are 26 rambling trails where you can walk or bike through soft marshlands, towering bluffs, pleasing pastures, and thick forests. Those trails make up the Katy Trail State Park the longest public area in the United States that was formerly train tracks. Built on the corridor of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad, there's also quite a bit of history to be found on any outdoor excursion in this state park. Most trails go past restored historic depots and former railroad towns. It's no surprise all 240 miles of this park were added to Rails-to-Trails Conservancy Hall of Fame in 2008. But trails like this weren't always so pleasant. In the 1950s and '60s, there was dramatic decline in train use. By 1966, less than 2% of intercity commuters were using tr...

The Childrens Cancer Institute in Sydney recently launched an ambitious program. From early next year, scientists will analyse the unique cancer cells of 12 children diagnosed with the most aggressive forms of the disease to find the best treatment for each child. By 2020, they aim to have these individualised treatment options available to all children diagnosed with cancers that have a less than 30% survival rate. This way of tailoring treatment to each person is known as personalised medicine, and advances in DNA sequencing have paved the way for a new era in cancer management. Tailoring Treatments The modern use of the term personalised medicine is based on the idea that by understanding the specific molecular code of a persons disease, and particularly its genetic makeup, we can more...

How many lions does it take to kill a lamb? The answer isnt as straightforward as you might think. Not, at least, according to game theory. Game theory is a branch of maths that studies and predicts decision-making. It often involves creating hypothetical scenarios, or games, whereby a number of individuals called players or agents can choose from a defined set of actions according to a series of rules. Each action will have a pay-off and the aim is usually to find the maximum pay-off for each player in order to work out how they would likely behave. This method has been used in a wide variety of subjects, including economics, biology, politics and psychology, and to help explain behaviour in auctions, voting and market competition.   Certain aspects of evolution -- such as the creation of new species -- can be predicted and repeatable, a new study finds. An analysis of stick insect genomes reveals the role of natural selection in speciation: Natural selection can drive two different populations of the same species to develop similar traits by inducing similar genetic changes on their genomes. The findings also suggest that two very similar species might evolve separately if they were placed under the same environmental pressures.    If you could rewind "the videotape of life," would animals evolve exactly the same way they did? “Our results suggest, at least partially, yes,” Zach Gompert from Utah State says in a news release. “Despite some idiosyncratic outcomes, there may be a repeatab
