The fate of the polar bear is inextricably linked to that of the sea ice on which they hunt. With the world warming, the prospectsfor these magnificent animals is balancing on a knife edge. This is where it gets a little bit grim, says Polar Bears Internationalresearcher Andrew Derocher, currently based in Churchill,Canada,to IFLScience. He explains how the loss of sea ice over the last 30 years has been welldocumented through satellite imagery, and the future isnt particularly rosy either. Going forward in time, there is a pretty consistent pattern for loss of sea ice. I think weve probably got enough global warming locked in that Churchill and the Hudson Bay system probably wont have bearstowards mid-century. The survival of the polar bear and its continued persistence into the future ...

There’s a myth out there that scientists are always very serious and perhaps even slightly boring. Fortunately, this isn’t even remotely true. Prime evidence for how hilariously awesome scientists are is found right in scientific journals, based on what they have decided to name newly-discovered species. This has already been covered on IFLS when dealing with names of genes, but scientists also take creative license when naming entire organisms as well. There are a ton of organisms that have been named after celebrities, politicians, and even works of fiction. I would never have time to go through all of them, so here are some of my favorites: Kooteninchele deppi Kooteninchele deppi was a 4-centimeter-long (1.6-inch-long) sea creature that lived about 505 million year

South American horned frogs have a pretty frumpy body shape. Their extremely round bodies and large mouths have earned them the nickname “Pac-Man frogs,” due to their resemblance to the video game character of the same name. This stocky body type actually works perfectly for their hunting style. Rather than needing a long, lean body to climb and track down food like some frogs, these guys just partially bury themselves in the dirt and lazily wait for something to walk in front of their face. When suitable prey is near enough, the frog’s super-sticky tongue darts out to quickly ensnare it.  While the use of a sticky tongue has been working for amphibians and reptiles for millions of years, researchers didn’t really know much about the adhesive performance or the amoun

A man winds his way through the muck and mire of a 19th-century American port Nantucket, centre of the worlds whaling industry. He knocks on a door, enters, and begs an exhausted looking man to tell him his story in exchange for his life savings. Hes heard rumours, he says, rumours about the 1820 sinking of the Essex, a whaling ship. The man played by Ben Whishaw turns out to be Herman Melville. Hes searching for the true story that will lead him to write Moby-Dick. Ever since its publication in 1851, Moby-Dick has sparked the imagination with its prophetic, digressive and dangerous themes. So much so, it eclipsed the true story the novel is based on. But that real-life tale that of a vengeful whale taking out a whaling ship has now been adapted in true swashbuckling s...

Stalking, chasing, and taking down prey like high-leaping springbok or giant elk is a hard day’s work. But over the course of thousands of years, cheetahs and pumas have polished their hunting strategies down to a precise science, according to two studies published in Science this week. They’re much less energetically constrained by resources and competition than we thought. Carnivores must balance the energy spent seeking and subduing prey with what they get back when they finally kill something. It’s essential that they carefully calculate calorie costs and gains. Researchers used to think prey loss to theft and the extra energy expenditure from having to trek across rugged terrain might be weakening the wild cats, but perhaps not. Researchers analyzing the DNA of over 5,000 purebreds and mixed breeds alike say dogs were domesticated in Central Asia likely near modern-day Nepal or Mongolia and then they spread from there to East Asia and elsewhere. The findings are published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences this week. Archaeologists and geneticists agree that dogs evolved from Eurasian gray wolves at least 15,000 years ago. And while Canis lupus familiaris might be the worlds first domesticated species, exactly when and where that happened is still hotly debated. Most of the dogs we have today arent actually purebred or even mixes of modern breeds. Rather, most are village dogs belonging to a free-ranging, free-breeding population with some relationship with humans. Village dogs are more genetica...

Birds Really Do Sleep While Flying

Given the enormous distances that some birds travel while foraging for food, scientists have often wondered how these feathered voyagers find time to sleep when on their mammoth journeys. It has previously been hypothesized that some birds actually sleep mid-flight, yet keep one half of their brain awake at all times in order to monitor where they are going. For the first time, researchers have now observed the brain activity of frigatebirds in flight, confirming that they do indeed take power naps while soaring through the air. Surprisingly, however, the team discovered that the birds occasionally shut off both hemispheres of their brains, indicating that it is not necessary to keep one half of the brain alert in order to maintain aerodynamic control. Perhaps even more unexpectedly, howe...

Image: CASC/China Ministry of DefenseChina's Jade Rabbit moon rover may have stubbed its lucky foot. The state-run Xinhua news agency reported Saturday that China's Yutu moon rover (the name means Jade Rabbit) "has experienced a mechanical control abnormality, and scientists are organizing repairs." It is not clear how serious the abnormality, but the news agency said the moon rover's malfunction occurred due to the "complicated lunar surface environment," citing the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense (SASTIND). The issue with the solar-powered rover robot emerged as it entered its second hibernation period on the moon Jan. 25 as the lunar night fell, according to SASTIND officials. Earlier on Jan. 24 the Chang'e 3 lander also went into its ow...

Ants Are Capable of Changing Their Priorities

Ants are highly social and they must work together to provide food and shelter for the entire colony. It has recently been discovered that there is no set hierarchy on the importance of these aspects, as ants are capable of learning from previous experience to assess a current situation and determine what is most important at that time.  Takao Sasaki and Stephen C. Pratt from Arizona State University’s School of Life Sciences have published their findings in Biology Letters. The study was focused on Temnothorax rugatulus, an ant species native to the west coast of North America, stretching from British Colombia, Canada down to Arizona in the Sonoran Desert.  Ants have many options to consider when looking for a new place to live. While the preference for a nest includ

This Badass Army Ranger is Taking on a New Mission… Hunting Down Child Predators

Tom Block was devastated when his military career in the 75th Ranger Regiment ended over an injury, and luckily found his second chance out in the civilian world. Thanks to some help from the Human Exploitation Rescue Operative Corps, or HERO Corps for short, he now aids federal law enforcement officers hunting child predators. The program itself falls under the Department of Homeland Security, and really helped give Block his purpose back after his retirement. During an interview he stated: I felt it was a great way to extend the mission I had in special operations. Its a mission of servitude and going after bad guys, and I like doing that and wanted to continue doing that. In order to work with the HERO Corps he had to pass a grueling eight week course, and in the end was only one of f...

Your life = one complete Canadian lie. 1. Good Will Hunting — known for its Boston setting, a lot actually filmed in Toronto. View this image › Miramax Films Miramax Films Google Maps   The famous Bostonian movie is, YEAH, NOT BOSTON. The movie did catch some bars and, of course, the MIT campus, in Massachusetts, but more scenes were actually shot in Canada. For example, the corporate building where Will rejects a job offer is on Bloor street in downtown Toronto (right). And the candy store where Will and Skyler go on their first date? A candy store in Canada. 2. The Twilight Saga — supposed to be Washington, filmed in various U.S. locations, but the beautiful aerial shots? Yup, Canada. View this image › Summit Entertain...

These Sex-Starved Creatures Scavenge New Genes From Other Pondlife

Sexual reproduction is thought to be essential for mixing up genes and holding your own in the race for survival. A major embarrassment to this theory are microscopic animals called rotifers, one class of which has reproduced without sex for millions of years. Theory says they should be extinct, but clearly they arent. So how have they done it? DNA sequencing now shows that they make up for their lack of sex by incorporating genes from other rotifers of the same or different species, or even from fungi and bacteria. Youll find rotifers in ponds or puddles. Under the microscope theyre incredibly cute little (smaller than 1mm) multicelled invertebrates, motoring around like tiny paddle-steamers. This is an illusion from the circle of whirling cilia around their heads that dri...
