5 Common Mistakes Recent Grads Make When Looking For Work

Uncategorized
Elin Kling We all make mistakes; it’s human. Through trial and error, we learn what to do and what not to do. In some cases, this slow method is okay, but when it comes to searching for work, the mistakes we make prove very painful. There are a lot of outdated approaches being promoted, so it’s not your fault you struggle to find great work. I trained as a lawyer but never worked as one, yet I have been able to do work others dream about. Over the past few years, I have successfully coached university students to get jobs once they graduate. If you follow the contrarian approach, which I advocate here, you’ll be able to do the same. Mistake #1: Not knowing what their unique value proposition is Take stock of your strengths and weaknesses and personal preferences. Do this

North American Population Boom Preceded Agriculture

Uncategorized
The population of what is now the American midwest boomed before the widespread adoption of agriculture, a new paper has revealed. The findings suggest that increasing numbers were a contributing factor to the adoption of settled lifestyles, rather than a consequence of them. The evidence sheds light on arguably the most important event in human history, although different factors may have been atplay in other parts of the world. "Domesticated plants and animals are part of our everyday lives, so much so that we take them for granted," said Dr Brian Codding, of the University of Utah, in a statement. "But they allowed for large numbers of people to live in one place. That ultimately set the stage for the emergence of civilization." The birth of agriculture has been associated with populat...

Injecting Bacteria Can Shrink Tumors

Injecting tumors with bacteria may sound an odd way to tackle cancer, but the idea has actually been around for some time. Doctors first observed that bacterial infections can reduce or even eliminate tumors some 200 years ago. In the 1890s, a surgeon successfully treated thousands of cancer patients by injecting them with dead Streptococcus. The idea largely lost interest, but a few groups have experimented with the technique in recent years. Unfortunately, however, human trials previously yielded disappointing results. Undeterred by this, a team of Johns Hopkins researchers have been pursuing the idea for over a decade. Now, in a recently published study using a different bacterial species to previous studies, they have demonstrated that this form of therapy may ac

A study of how echidnas respond to fires has revealed a previously unknown capacity, one that may explain how mammals survived the global catastrophe that wiped out the dinosaurs. Echidnas may look like oversized hedgehogs with an ant-eater's nose, but both their spines and mouthparts are examples of convergent evolution. They are actually monotremes, along with theplatypus, the last surviving egg laying mammals. As such, they provide some insight into our distant ancestors. Professor Fritz Geiserof the University of New England, Australia, studied what happened when an area of echidna habitat south-east of Perth was deliberately burned as part of an environmental regeneration project. GPS devices indicated the short-beaked echidnas (Tachyglossus aculeatus)probably retreated...

Killer whales (Orcinus Orca) are well known for their ingenious hunting techniques, which range from generating artificial waves in order to knock seals off ice floes to deliberately beaching themselves in order to catch coastal sea lions. However, orcas in the waters off Patagonia appear to have now raised the sneakiness stakes, after researchers observed a never-before-seen method of ambushing dolphins. Until now, virtually nothing was known about the diet or predation methods of orcas in the region during the months of February to April, when the sea lion hunting period reaches its yearly low. While it had previously been hypothesized that Patagonian killer whales may have fed on dusky dolphins at this time, the recent sighting which was reported in the journal Aquatic Mammals provid...

The intense embrace amid the rioters and police reminds us of this photo from the Vancouver Riots of 2011: Muse's "Madness" comes on the heels of the English rock band's high-profile inclusion in the International Olympic Committee's music video for the London Olympics this summer. Cure is a word thats dominated the rhetoric in the war on cancer for decades. But its a word that medical professionals tend to avoid. While the American Cancer Society reports that cancer treatment has improved markedly over the decades and the five-year survival rate is impressively high for many cancers, oncologists still refrain from declaring their cancer-free patients cured. Why? Patients are declared cancer-free (also called complete remission) when there are no more signs of detectable disease. However, minuscule clusters of cancer cells below the detection level can remain in a patients body after treatment. Moreover, such small clusters of straggler cells may undergo metastasis, where they escape from the initial tumor into the bloodstream and ultimately settle in...

An increasing number of food-poisoning outbreaks in Britain are being caused by undercooked chicken livers. This increase has occurred at the same time as some celebrity chefs are advocating cooking livers for only a short period, recommending that the livers be served pink in the middle. But this trend to serve rare chicken livers is potentially exposing the public to the risk of food poisoning caused by Campylobacter bacteria. Each year, there are 250,000 cases, of which about 100 are fatal. In a study carried out with colleagues from the universities of Bangor, Manchester and Liverpool, we presented 140 chefs from around the UK with a set of photos of cooked chicken livers and asked them to select the dish they would prefer to serve. The photos differed only in how pink the livers wer...

"The Deadliest Catch" might be about to get a little less deadly. Battling the high seas and fighting the treacherous conditions in order to land a haul and make it all worthwhile, the daring exploits of fishermen make it one of the most dangerous jobs to do. But a new study has found that such risky behavior by fishermen hunting in the North Pacific for the sablefish, also known as black cod, has steeply declined. It seems that by altering how the fish stocks are managed, the trade-off between catch size and safety has been reduced. Normally, the researchers found that traditional management of fisheries promoted risky behavior by the fishermen. By limiting the vessels to a certain number of days they are allowed to fish, it encouraged the boats to be launched around-the-c...

Score another one for Kepler: the repurposed equipment has observed three planets transiting a nearby star. The most distant of the planets resides in the star’s habitable zone, where liquid water—and potentially life—could exist. Ian Crossfield from the University of Arizona is lead author of the paper, which has been submitted to The Astrophysical Journal, yet can be read on arXiv. The planets in question orbit EPIC 201367065, a cool M-dwarf star 150 light-years away. This star is near enough for scientists to observe the planets’ transit. This can provide information about their respective atmospheric compositions, which will indicate if the planet is capable of sustaining life. Emile, who died in December 2013, was "patient zero," or the first person known to have contracted Ebola in the current outbreak that has now claimed at least 7,600 lives in the region. Charlie Sheens recent announcement that he has HIV has raised concerns about whether he may have transmitted the infection to other people. While we obviously dont know his specific medical details (and really, its none of our business), HIV treatment is effective at reducing transmission. This is known as the treatment as prevention strategy. There have been many advances in HIV care since Rock Hudson was diagnosed in the 1980s. At this time, the prognosis of AIDS was similar to patients with advanced cancer. Since the mid-1990s, combinations of antivirals have markedly improved the survival of people living with HIV. Modern combinations are simple to take (as few as one tablet, once a day) and associated with much fewer side effects than older drugs. The life expectancies of people livi...

The Girl Who Survived The Brain-Eating Amoeba

Uncategorized
One year ago, Kali Hardig went swimming at an Arkansas water park and the next day was rushed to the hospital where doctors diagnosed her with a rare, 99% fatal condition: a brain-eating amoeba. This is the miraculous story of how she lived. July 19, 2013 The hazy glare of another hot morning shone through the blinds when Kali Hardig plopped onto a gray, floral-patterned couch and waited for the throbbing in her head to subside. It hurt really bad. Almost as if her long, sun-drenched hair were on fire. Kali, who was then 12 years old, didn’t even want to get out of bed. “Mama,” she said, “just let me sleep.” Traci, her mother, said she didn’t want Kloee, her bouncy little Yorkie, up on the couch. Even with t...

Oh Deer: A Tricky Conservation Problem For Tasmania

Uncategorized
Deer were introduced into Australia in the 19th century for hunting. There are now six species roaming wild, and their numbers are increasing dramatically as their population expands and through human action. As they spread, they raise uncomfortable issues for conservation. Fallow deer (Dama dama) were introduced to Tasmania for hunting by the newly arrived colonists in the 1830s. Now after 180 years, there is growing concern amongst land holders and conservationists that this species is on the move. From a current population estimated at 25,000, modelling suggests deer could increase by 40% in the next decade. That would mean up to a million animals by mid century without additional management. This has all the elements of a wicked problem, a stand-off with no right answer...

Laughter plays a crucial role in every culture across the world. But its not clear why laughter exists. While it is evidently an inherently social phenomenon people are up to 30 times more likely to laugh in a group than when alone laughters function as a form of communication remains mysterious. A new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and involving a large group of researchers led by Gregory Bryant from UCLA, suggests that laughter may indicate to listeners the friendship status of those laughing. The researchers asked listeners to judge the friendship status of pairs of strangers and friends based on short snippets of their simultaneous laughter. Drawn from 24 different societies, they found that listeners were able to reliably dist...

I mean, whoever thought it would’ve been a better idea to continue letting EA Sports make NBA games than to create a video game for gamers to become Jay Z and Beyoncé as you

The image went viral online and the myth of these street toughs in Nigeria with Hyenas grew. Pieter was captivated and knew he had to learn more. Through a journalist friend, Hugo tracked down a Nigerian reporter, Adetokunbo Abiola, who said that he knew the Gadawan Kura as they are known in Hausa (a rough translation: ‘hyena handlers/guides’). A few weeks later, Pieter was on a plane to Lagos. The following is a recount of H

There was an issue with one hatchling turtle breaking out of his egg. The struggle looked unusual to Garden State Tortoise founder, Chris Leone, but he soon realized what was going on. There were actually two babies in one egg! Leone had to intervene, even though normally he does not. He shared what he discovered: The egg contained TWINS. Perfectly formed, sharing the same yolk sac, the slightly larger of the two was the one trying to break out. Leone talks about how important it is not to intervene during this process, but why there are always exceptions: Its always best not to interfere with these animals but sometimes its needed. In this case, our help was needed for their survival. Next came the part of actually separating the twin tortoises, because they were stuck together. A piece o...

Neanderthal Diets Changed With Climate. Ours Didnt

Researchers studying tooth wear patterns in ancient Homo reveal that as climate began to fluctuate severely in the Ice Age Neanderthals adapted their diets in a different way than our own species. The findings, published in PLOS One this week, suggest that human dietary strategies gave our species an edge over Neanderthals. The Neanderthal lineage survived for hundreds of thousands of years throughout western Eurasia, successfully dealing with both harsh and changing environments. Why they went extinct some 40,000 years ago is still a mystery. Some researchers would expect Neanderthals to be better adapted than Homo sapiens a species that evolved in Africa to live in Europe during extreme climate instability. But, modern humans replaced Neanderthals, suggesting that our...
