Disease Evolution: Our Long History Of Fighting Viruses

This is the first of a three-part package on how diseases evolve when we change the way we live. Part two, tomorrow, will explore the origins of anorexia and how mental illness is shaped by time and culture. Part three, on Friday, will examine the causes of Zika, Ebola and SARS and how disease outbreaks can be prevented. A virus is essentially an information system (encoded in DNA or RNA) surrounded by a protective coat and shaped by evolution to ensure its own replication and survival. Viruses grow only in living cells. But they infect everything from the simplest, single-cell organisms, such as amoebae, to multicellular, multi-organ ecosystems like us. Bacteria, on the other hand, are cells in their own right and carry all the molecular machinery needed for their reproduc...

Spin the Wheels on This Bike to Charge Your Phone

In a populous place like New York City, there are plenty of random outlets at coffee shops, bookstores and local Apple Stores to energize your dying smartphone. There are even charging stations at Jay Z's 40/40 Club by Flatiron. But, recharging a dead phone involves whipping out a bulky charger and hogging up table space, which isn't very polite. The Charge Cycle offers a seemingly better way to charge your phone out in the open. The Charge Cycle hopes to bring a network of outdoor neon-green stationary bikes that anyone can hop on to charge their phone. All they have to do is peddle. It takes the same amount of time to charge as if you were to plug directly into a wall — five minutes of cycling will increase your charge by roughly 5%. There have been a rash of stories spreading on the internet about a study that supposedly concluded that smelling farts could decrease the risk of cancer, stroke, arthritis, erectile dysfunction, dementia, and several other ailments. While it should go without saying that this conclusion was taken entirely out of context, apparently we need to slow down and take it from the start. Hydrogen sulfide is a gas associated with the disgusting smell of rotten eggs or human flatulence that can be fatal in large quantities. However, the human body uses enzymes to create small amounts of the gas for cellular signaling as well. A group of researchers led by Matthew Whiteman of the University of Exeter have created a molecule called AP39 which delivers hydrogen sulfide to mitoch...

In fact, its silly arms are one of its defining features, and a new PLOS ONE study has revealed that this bizarre trait evolved independently in other dinosaurs. A newly-excavated dinosaur from Patagonia has been found with a pair of ludicrously tiny arms ending in short, two-fingered claws. This sizeable theropod was a carnivorous, bipedal, bird-like dinosaur, meaning that its somewhat related to the T. rex. New Exomoon Detection Technique

Astronomers have found more than a thousand extrasolar planets, but so far, no moons have been found orbiting those planets. They’ve spotted signs of exomoons, but those remain unconfirmed. Surely hordes of them must be out there, and scientists suspect they might be even more habitable than the exoplanets they orbit.    A new exomoon detection technique proposed by René Heller of McMaster University relies on the eclipsing effect of the moon when viewed against its host star. Shadows are created during mini-eclipses where exoplanets (and possibly moons) cross the face of their star, as viewed from Earth. These transit events have already been used to find hundreds of exoplanets, and various efforts to find exomoons have focused on the slight variations in t

Pregnancy: Cooperative Paradise Or Conflict-Driven Battle Between Mother And Child?

Pregnancy sounds like the ultimate form of animal cooperation mothers share their own bodies to grow and support their childrens prenatal development. But in reality, embryos use every trick in the book to take more than their fair share. Mothers, in turn, marshal their best defensive tactics. Ultimately, its an evolutionary arms race. Offspring continually evolve strategies to steal resources, while mothers evolve strategies to defend their resources. Natural selection will favor embryos that are able to steal resources, but this will impose costs on the mother. My colleagues and I are interested in how the mechanisms of this battle could have evolved. Everyone’s Getting Engaged But Me: 4 Reasons To Embrace Being Single

Tumblr It seems that an epidemic of engagements is upon us. Relationship status updates and engagement photos have begun to plague my news feed at an alarmingly rapid rate. Never before have I seen so many people under the age of 25 saying yes to the dress, forcing me to do what social media subliminally begs us all to do: compare and evaluate my own life decisions. Should I be wanting this? Is there something wrong with me because, not only am I completely content with my current relationship status, but also wholeheartedly believe I’m too young for marriage? I’m the first to admit it: When I think of eternal love, I associate it with my dedication to Netflix, loyalty to Starbucks and love affair with pizza, so surely this means I’m not mature enough to handle seating c

So, how do we satisfy our desires to travel during the chilly months of January, February and March? Winter weather poses threats, and nobody wants to waste vacation days sitting at an airport waiting for a delayed flight or driving on potentially dangerous, snow-covered roads. Bacterial Communication Signals Altered To Battle Pancreatic Cancer

The key to successful cancer treatment involves identifying the disease early, before it has a chance to metastasize and spread around the body. However, some cancers—due to the tissue type or at which stage it was diagnosed—don’t respond well to traditional treatments. As a way of combating these tricky diseases, a group of researchers have reprogrammed the chemical signals used by bacteria for communication, telling the cancer cells to kill themselves. The research was led by Senthil Kumar of the University of Missouri and the paper was published in PLOS ONE. Cell-to-cell communication in bacterial colonies occurs through a process called quorum sensing, where the individual cells generate chemical signals that are picked up by others. This can cause certain genes

A group of physicists recently built the smallest engine ever created from just a single atom. The atom is trapped in a cone of electromagnetic energy and lasers are used to heat it up and cool it down, which causes the atom to move back and forth in the cone like an engine piston. The scientists from the University of Mainz in Germany who are behind the invention dont have a particular use in mind for the engine. The Australian prime ministers award for science has been awarded to University of Sydney biologist Rick Shine, who has been helping to protect the countrys wildlife from poisonous cane toads using sausages containing small, non-lethal amounts of meat from the deadly amphibians. Cane toads, which are native to Central and South America, were introduced to Australia in 1935 in an attempt to control populations of cane beetles in Queenslands sugar plantations. Unfortunately, the experiment backfired spectacularly, as the toads reproduced at a rate of knots, spreading across much of the country. Many predatory reptiles and mammals have since died as a result of eating these toads, which now pose a considerable threat to the survival of several native species. Since starring as the high-kick wielding, eleven-year-old Hit Girl in Kick-Ass, we always suspected we’d want Chloe Grace Moretz on our team if anything seriously bad was about to happen to the earth. In her new film, The 5th Wave, the words “seriously bad” are a bit of an understatement when it comes to the predicament of the world as we know it. In short, some pesky aliens appear and go all rouge landlord: kicking humans out as if they’ve been the worst tenants ever via five deadly waves of f*ck off. Chloe said it was actually a “harrowing film to make”: “We were so isolated in the woods most of the time. It was scary to have that amount of distance between you and civilization and to put yourself in the mindset of Cassie (her character)&hell...

Colleen Green’s “Deeper Than Love” is so accurate in describing what it’s like to feel insecure and terrified of intimacy that it’s kinda terrifying. 1. Colleen Green's second album I Want to Grow Up is basically a quarter life crisis set to catchy ‘90s-style alt rock. View this image › Hardly Art She starts the record off with a bold resolution to change -- "I want to grow up / because I'm sick of being immature / I wanna be responsible / and I'm so sick of being insecure" -- and the rest of the album shows how that's easier said than done. She sings about dating fickle dudes and dealing w...

5 Things You Hear About Buying Your First Home That Just Aren’t True

Entering the housing market for the first time can be terrifying, particularly in todays times. Most of us still have the memories of the housing bubble and the crash of 2008 in the back of our minds when we think about finally buying a home. Its natural to be apprehensive, but as it turns out, now is actually an excellent time to buy a house. This is partly because everyone else is equally apprehensive about buying a home. Lack of demand means its currently a buyers market, as anybody listing their home is likely struggling to get the kind of attention they want. For those holding out on purchasing their first home, chances are theres a ton of reasons why. Some of these reasons, however, are just misinformed or out of date, especially if youre citing these five common myths. You need mas...

Nail Polish Isn’t Just For Pretty Fingers And Toes — Here Are 19 Other Uses

Growing up, I was rarely allowed to paint my nails. My mom considered the lacquer too mature for a teenager. But in a world where tweens have cell phones and just about everyone has a social media account -- I'm looking at you, babies and pets -- what is "too mature" anymore? Not much.Nowadays, you'll be hard-pressed to find me without painted tips and toenails, but the colorful polish is good for far more than just accessorizing an outfit. Here are just a few ways you can get the most out of your nail colors. 1. Instead of licking tons of envelopes -- bleh! -- seal them with some nail polish! Flickr / Lisa Brank 2. Turn any smooth rock into a beautifully customized paperweight with a little lacquer. Flickr...

These Japanese Researchers May Have Photographic Evidence Of A Megalodon Shark

Uncategorized
For a while now, a video has been lurking in the deep recesses of the Internet that claims to contain footage of a megalodon (a giant shark that's thought to be extinct). It was captured by Japanese scientists. Many cryptozoologists are eager to use this as irrefutable proof of the ancient predator's continued existence, but YouTuber AllThings Creepy isn't convinced. Check out his testimony against this being a megalodon. The kid makes some good points, but are they enough to debunk the footage? I'm no shark expert, but I think he has a point here. Due to the hunting of whales, many species are on the endangered list, so how would a megalodon be able to get enough food? Sorry, cryptophiles -- this one might just be a regular old shark.Read more: http://www.viralnova.com/megalodon/

Stunning Open Concept Loft with Exposed Brick

Photograph by Teed Haze Located in San Francisco’s South Beach neighbourhood, this gorgeous open-concept ‘hard’ loft has soaring ceilings and an amazing wall of exposed brick. At 2,200 sq. ft., the space is unique as it’s a fully designated live/work space so you could either live here or have a pretty sweet office space. Listed by Teed Haze at a cool $1,550,000 USD, this 2 bedroom (or office) place also features a spacious outdoor patio. My only concern would be noise/privacy, as it does not seem like the bedrooms/offices/bathrooms are enclosed. Some might deem that the nature of ‘open-concept’ though… The building itself was built in 1916 for use as a warehouse and printing shop (thus the term ‘hard’ loft since the building had an ...

How friendship is more important then ever before View this image › At a classic summer Brooklyn party I don’t know about you, but I am deeply, truly and madly in love with my best friends. This may sound as though I am just stating the obvious truth for everyone, but I am starting to believe that the way my friends and I feel about each other, may not be the same as for most people. I have met many people that don’t actually have a sizable group of friends that they adore, love, know everything about and spend almost all of their free time with. In fact, some of them don’t even have one friend that they can spend every evening, chatting, laughing, and adoring. Their “best friends” seem more like distant acquaintances when compared again...
