J. Phoenix Smith lost her job during the Great Recession. Smith is from Oakland, California, and she has worked in community health for her entire career. But in 2010, with the economy stumbling along, Smith suddenly found herself without a job. "I was having a rough time," says Smith, in a voice that immediately makes you feel like she's an old friend. Like many people in California at the time, losing her job gave Smith a lot of free time and a lot of anxiety. So, as her own form of therapy, Smith turned to the outdoors. "Everyday I'd go for a hike," Smith says. Oakland might be just a hop, skip, and a jump from San Francisco and Silicon Valley, but it's surrounded by a wealth of wild places, which Smith started discovering once she was unemployed. "I was doing more hikes by mys...

Taya Kyle embarked on a hunting trip to bring her closer to her late husband, the subject of Oscar-nominated film “American Sniper,” Chris Kyle. The Wyoming excursion was made into a short film titled “He Is With Me,” in which Taya, 40, shoots antelope and discusses her husband’s relationship with hunting. It was this pastime that unlocked Chris’s natural talent as a marksman as a child, and Taya believes her husband is with her in spirit every time she ventures out into the wild. Accompanying her on the trip were hunters sponsored by gunmaker Weatherby Inc., a team Taya says her husband had wanted to join. A Philippines Island Has The Worlds Greatest Concentration Of Unique Mammals Heres Why

Were taught that evolution is all about survival of the fittest. But thats not always the case. In fact, sometimes evolution can be the result of a lucky animal finding any port in a storm. And the finding that Luzon, an island in the Philippines, has the greatest concentration of unique mammals in the world even more than Madagascar is the perfect example. Islands are often examples of an evolutionary free for all, where a newly-introduced species may find itself in the perfect situation, whether thats a new and different type of habitat and resources or even a complete lack of competitors and predators. Being introduced to an island ecosystem can turn a rather mediocre mainland species into a weird and wonderful new creation. Examples of species found on one island and nowhere else (...

CLIFF CAMPING IN NORWAY Photograph by Peter Przybille on Flickr In this stunning evening photograph, we see a group of hikers camping out on the famous cliff of Preikestolen in Norway. In English this place may be known as Preacher’s Pulpit or Pulpit Rock, or by the old local name, Hyvlatonna (“the carpenter-plane’s blade”). Preikestolen is a massive cliff 604 meters (1982 feet) above Lysefjorden, opposite the Kjerag plateau, in Forsand, Ryfylke, Norway. The top of the cliff is approximately 25 by 25 metres (82 by 82 feet) square, almost flat, and is a famous tourist attraction in Norway. A trip to Preikestolen from the closest car park takes about 3-4 hours for a round-trip hike. Even though the elevation differential is only 334 metres (1096 feet) and the walk

"I used to be a farmer, growing tomatoes and potatoes ... I dream to go back home." It was 2012 when Abu Alaa finally decided to flee his country with his wife and five kids amidst the dangerous Syrian conflict that took the life of his brother and burned down his house. Still, it was hard for him to leave home. And it's hard for most people to even imagine being put in that situation to begin with. Image via Morgan Shoaff/Upworthy. If you've ever had a pet go missing, you know that sinking feeling you get in the pit of your stomach. Thinking about your best friend out in the cold is heartbreaking enough, but for the Cole family of San Lorenzo Valley, California, that sadness was compounded by the fact that their missing pup was elderly and blind.Sage the 12-year-old yellow lab had gone missing on February 24 and after days and days with no luck, they had all but given up hope. They searched high and low for the pooch but she was nowhere to be found. But then something caught neighbor Dan Estrada's eye a week later. As he was walking around in a wooded area not far from his and the Cole's homes, he noticed what he thought was a white trash bag thrown into ...

Since July 2015, the Syrian mountain town of Madaya has been under siege by their own government. 40,000 people live there, and the government (mostly) allows people to move freely within the town limits. But with a few exceptions for emergency aid, no one has been allowed in or out of the mountainside town for more than a year, effectively turning the former resort town into an open-air prison. Government officials have consistently denied travel visas to visitors, too, which means no one knows exactly what's going on within city limits except that dozens of people have already starved to death and that it's all in retaliation for a few rebels in the town who opposed the brutal actions of the Assad regime. ABC News producer Rym Momtaz became obsessed with the city of Madaya early o...

We all occupy a world in which particular places remain important to individuals and societies for thousands of years. The world around these places may alter beyond all recognition, but certain places seem to demand both our attention and physical return for generations. In research we recently published, we suggest that this cultural phenomenon is not unique to modern humans. From at least a quarter of a million years ago, Neanderthal populations can be seen to have persistently and deliberately returned to particular places over tens of thousands of years. This is despite radical climate-driven changes in environment and landscapes. Our study focused on one such site: La Cotte de St Brelade in Jersey in the Channel Islands. Some tumors contain massive DNA molecules that are undeniably reminiscent of Frankenstein: They’re stitched together from various other parts of the genome. Now researchers working on this decades-old mystery say they’ve figured out how these monsters appear in tumors. The findings, published in Cancer Cell this week, might explain how tumors safeguard their survival.  First discovered in the 1950s, neochromosomes are these giant, extra chromosomes found in up to three percent of all cancers. They’re especially common in tumors of soft tissue (sarcomas), fat tissue (liposarcomas), and some brain and blood cancers. They can be many times the size of our largest, normal chromosome, and they also contain extra copies of altered genes known to drive cancer development, c

Understanding Genetic Differences Between Breast Cancer Tumors Is Key To Better Treatment

Breast cancer is not a single disease. It is in fact, a collection of genetic changes that all lead to the same outcome: a tumor in the breast. This means that breast cancer patients cant be treated with identical therapies. Instead, therapy must be tailored to the underlying genetic changes that causes the tumor. To do this, physicians can look at a tumors genetic markers, which are called biomarkers. Looking at these biomarkers helps oncologists choose the treatment that is most likely to be effective in a particular tumor. Based on her tumors biomarkers, a breast cancer patient could receive hormone therapy, targeted therapy or chemotherapy as her treatment course. This is called precision medicine, and it has had some successes in breast cancer treatment. Many biomarker-based, or pre...

In the world of insects, you could make an argument for the praying mantis being the most majestic, even though it's a ruthlessly efficient hunter. These bugs make quick work of taking down anything that gets in their way, yet still have a certain beauty about them that's hard to find in other insects. But just when you thought that the praying mantis couldn't get more majestic (or creepy), here comes the orchid mantis. The orchid mantis (pictured below) is a species native to Southeast Asia. It has evolved to look like an orchid flower, as you might've guessed. YouTube / precarious333 If you were quickly looking at one of these guys in their natural environment, you would never susp...

Tents and clothes mixed with rock and ice were found along the glacier at 9,500 feet, the National Park Service said. Citing continuous ice and rock fall that make the area dangerous even for rescuers, Mount Rainier National Park officials said that there were no plans to recover the bodies of the six climbers. A strong indication of Musk's plans came during his presentation at last week's Tesla shareholder meeting at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, Calif. Responding to an audience suggestion of opening Tesla's Supercharger network to other automakers as a means to accelerate electric vehicle adoption around the world, Musk seemed to already have a few ideas in mind for such a move in the future. A documentary airing tonight on ABCs Four Corners, Shark Alarm, comes on the heels of a spate of shark bites in New South Wales and raises questions about our relationship with these formidable animals. Why do sharks bite humans? Are shark numbers exploding? If they are, is that a good or a bad thing? And the ultimate question (from a human point of view, at least): how can we make ocean users safer? Anyone who says that they can confidently predict when, where or why sharks bite people is almost certainly wrong, regardless of whether theyre a scientist, a politician or a journalist. Why? Partly because we simply dont know enough about sharks to anticipate their moves, and partly because attacks are so rare. Despite the media hype, youre still more likely to drown than be b...

Resolving To Cure Cancer, Obama Promises The Impossible

Uncategorized
In his 2016 State of the Union address last week, United States President Barack Obama declared he wanted America to be the country that cures cancer once and for all. Obamas goal is unrealistic, too simplistic and not achievable by the United States, or any other country. Cancer is not just one but a group of more than 100 different diseases, for which no single cure will ever be effective. Finding better drugs to treat cancer effectively and with fewer side effects will certainly help reduce the number of people who die from the disease. But instead of romantic hopes for cancer cures, countries need to invest more to find better methods for early detection and awareness campaigns to promote healthier lifestyles. What Do We Mean By Cure? Firstly, something this important c...

Despite extensive recovery efforts, northern spotted owls in the northwestern U.S. are declining. Fast. According to a new Condor study, their populations have dropped by as much as 77 percent in parts of their range in just the last few years. Whats surprising is their biggest threat: not climate change or habitat loss, but other owls. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service listed the northern spotted owl, Strix occidentalis caurina, as threatened in 1990 because their old-growth forest habitats were being destroyed throughout their rangeby logging and timber harvesting. To help with northern spotted owl management and conservation, a team led by Katie Dugger of the U.S. Geological Survey studied markrecapture, reproduction, and territory occupancy data collected between 1985 ...

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the state of the worlds air pollution and the danger it poses to the global population a public health emergency in a new report announced today. 92 percent of the worlds population live in places that dont meet the WHOs safe air quality levels, resulting in up to 6 million deaths a year directly from air pollution. To date, air pollution both ambient (outdoor) and household (indoor) is the biggest environmental risk to health, carrying responsibility for about one in every nine deaths annually, Dr Maria Neira, head of the WHO's department of public health and environment, writes in the report. How My Mother’s Battle Against Breast Cancer Changed My Perspective On Life

I learned the hard way that the time to change your life isn’t when something bad happens to you, it’s before. As a result, I know what rock bottom feels like. I was once paralyzed from the neck down for close to four months. It was quite arguably the most humbling experience I’ve ever experienced in my 31 years of existence, but this story isn’t about me. This story is about the only woman who has been in my corner since day one and will remain there for as long as she lives. This story is about Mom, and about how fortunate I am to still be able to enjoy her today: May 2012 I have now been in remission for six months from chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP), a neurological disorder that stems from the brain’s inability...

Jupiter’s Great Red Spot Is Shrinking

It's been around for centuries, but Jupiter's Great Red Spot is shrinking, and doing so at an accelerating rate. Astronomers can still impress people by talking of a single storm larger than the whole Earth, but maybe not for much longer. The Great Red Spot remains the largest storm in the solar system. It is a high pressure (anticyclonic) storm system at latitude 22° in Jupiter's southern hemisphere. How long it is has been there no one knows, but something similar was described by Cassini in 1665 and even Galileo thought he saw something that might have been a predecessor. A century ago it stretched roughly 40,000km east to west and 14,000km north-south. The north-south axis hasn't changed all that much, but the long axis is now 16,500km long leading to suggestions

While it may seem like the tiny tots at your local preschool are just there to play, they are actually learning fundamental skills that will help them survive the real world. The new iPad mini was released Friday, and Jimmy Kimmel doesn't seem very enthusiastic about it. In a parody iPad mini commercial that aired on Jimmy Kimmel Live Thursday, first came the iPod. Then a thinner iPod. Then an iPod you can touch. Then lots of other iPods — ones that allow you to shuffle your songs, ones you can talk on, a gigantic one you can't talk on. And today, Apple released a slightly bigger iPod that you can't talk on. Which, according to the video, pretty much means we're all suckers. iPad Mini at the Apple 5th Ave Store The flagship Buyers started lining up to buy Apple's long-anticipated iPad Mini at the flagship store the day before it went on sale.
