Kim Kardashian's Fourth of July bash will most likely put your BBQ to shame (no offense). The get-together already gets major points for being a brunch, not a BBQ. Obviously, that's the trendiest way to celebrate America's independence. YouTube Unlike your outdoor shindig, Kim K's soire featured white table cloths, chic floral centerpieces, and mac and cheese that looks like it descended from the heavens. When I caught a glimpse of the menu, I immediately made my way into the kitchen to find something even slightly as satisfying. Comfort food took a whole new level with these photos and videos, which werefeatured on the Instagram account kimksnapchats. With her platinum blonde hair and signature red lipstick, Marilyn Monroe (who would have celebrated her 91st birthday on the 1st of June) is easily one of the most iconic celebrities of all time, however, only a few know what the actress looked like before she was famous. Born Norma Jeane Mortenson, Monroe had a really tough childhood. She moved from one foster home to another, going through traumatic experiences in almost all of them. She was sexually abused and even started developing a stutter. Monroe married at the age of sixteen, but that didn’t bring her happiness as well. Everything changed in 1944 when Monroe was working in a military factory where she was introduced to a photographer from the U.S. Army Air Force’s First Motion Picture Unit. This relationship propelled...

“We have to wonder, is this the real Jesus of the Bible or a Jesus of our own making?” By Daniel Darling Jesus is still very popular these days, even at a time when Christianity seems to be facing more social marginalization. From political and social movements to kitschy products to bumper stickers, weve appropriated Jesus as a mascot for our favorite causes. But we have to wonder, is this the real Jesus of the Bible or a Jesus of our own making? In Romans, the Apostle Paul teaches of Christs mission to call out a people and form them into His likeness, but it seems we are more interested in forming Jesus into our image. Even conservative, Bible-believing evangelicals are fond of making statements like, The Jesus I know would as if Jesuswho claimed to be th...

The first exoplanet was spotted in 1988. Since then more than 3,000 planets have been found outside our solar system, and its thought that around 20% of Sun-like stars have an Earth-like planet in their habitable zones. We dont yet know if any of these host life and we dont know how life begins. But even if life does begin, would it survive? Earth has undergone at least five mass extinctions in its history. Its long been thought that an asteroid impact ended the dinosaurs. As a species, we are rightly concerned about events that could lead to our own elimination climate change, nuclear war or disease could wipe us out. So its natural to wonder what it would take to eliminate all life on a planet. To establish a benchmark for this, weve been studying ...

Stick Bug Study Suggests Evolution is Predictable

Certain aspects of evolution -- such as the creation of new species -- can be predicted and repeatable, a new study finds. An analysis of stick insect genomes reveals the role of natural selection in speciation: Natural selection can drive two different populations of the same species to develop similar traits by inducing similar genetic changes on their genomes. The findings also suggest that two very similar species might evolve separately if they were placed under the same environmental pressures.    If you could rewind "the videotape of life," would animals evolve exactly the same way they did? “Our results suggest, at least partially, yes,” Zach Gompert from Utah State says in a news release. “Despite some idiosyncratic outcomes, there may be a repeatab

These are the six ways swapping the gym for the outdoors helped me lose weight: 1. With the savings on gym membership, I bought better equipment. Female Elk Can Tell What Kind Of Weapon Hunters Are Likely Carrying And Act Accordingly

Female elk are able to learn when hunters are using either rifles or bows, and as a result, alter their behavior to make it harder for the hunters to get their shot. As one of the largest species of deer, the main predator of elk is humans. If you see an old animal, then the odds are it will be female, as the males rarely make it past five years of age, as they are often shot for their antlers. But it seems that the older the females get, the better they become at avoiding humans and their weapons, and when they reach around 10 years of age, they are nearly invulnerable from human hunters. The researchers wanted to clarify whether the survival of female elk was being driven due to the selective hunting by humans in which the boldest animals are most l...

Despite chimpanzees having been known about in the western world perhaps for thousands of years, because of how similar the two ape species appear, the bonobo was not formally described as a separate species until 1928. Since then, it has become apparent that, despite living in very similar environments and looking morphologically alike, the two animals are strikingly different indeed. While chimpanzee males are highly territorial, with hostile and sometimes lethal intergroup encounters,...

Today, Amelia Mayer is known by many as the "Mountain Mama," but when it came to adventures with her own mama growing up, she wasn't into it. When she was just 1 year old, Amelia's parents took her hiking up the glaciers and mountains surrounding her home in Alaska. She may have been in the great outdoors often, but young Amelia had to be bribed with strawberries and pieces of chocolate. All images via Amelia Mayer, used with permission. Everything changed when she was around 7 years old the same age her eldest son is now. For the first time, Amelia realized what made the outdoors so magical. She was hiking up "Lazy Pete" a mountain you have to be anything but lazy to conquer. "I clearly remember running to the end of it," she says, "and feeling that sense of accomplishment." That ...

A single gene mutation that helped early humans survive in Europe and Asia during the Ice Age may alsoincrease the risk of arthritis in modern-day humans. Researchers from the Stanford University School of Medicine and Harvard University have found a gene mutation thathelped our ancestors survive colder temperatures by coding for shorter limbs, according to new research published in the journal Nature Genetics. As modern humans migrated out of Africa between 50,000 and 100,000 years ago during the last Ice age, they were faced with colder temperatures.Agenetic variant for shorter limbs may have helped thembetterwithstandfrostbite, the researchers argue. A drone captures a large pod of Humpback Whales feeding in the pristine waters of Alaska. The aerial drone footage, captured by AkxPro, shows a seagull’s POV of the scene. The humpbacks are using a coordinated hunting technique known as ‘bubble net feeding’. They start by making incredibly high-pitched noises which drives the fish to the surface. They then blow air bubbles (which act as a wall) to surround and concentrate their prey before they all rise to the surface with mouths open for feeding. However, theyve been able to use thrusters on the spacecraft to replace the job of this wheel, so apparently the rest of the mission will not be affected. Our culture, rather than intrinsic capacities, may have been what allowed modern humans to claim Europe and Asia from the Neanderthals. The theory is hard to prove, but mathematical modeling suggests it is credible, raisinginteresting questions about our defining features as a species. When our ancestors spread out from Africa roughly 60,000 years ago, those that moved north faced a daunting threat. Homo neanderthalensishad been in Europe and parts of Asia for approximately 200,000 years. They were physically stronger and better adaptedto the harsh Ice Age conditions. So how is it that within 5,000 yearsthey were extinct, their legacy merely the tiny portion of the human genome we inherited from themthrough rare cases of interbreeding? Polar Bears Face Starvation And Cub Loss Due To Sea Ice Loss

The future is not looking bright for polar bears living in Canada’s Arctic islands. If the current climate trend continues to the end of the century, sea ice decline will mean that many areas are no longer able to support polar bears, a depressing new study has found. With an absence of ice for several months a year, polar bears may face losing their cubs and starvation, leaving a rather bleak outlook for this population. The work has been published in the open access journal PLOS ONE. The world is warming up, and it’s having devastating impacts on ecosystems. Among those areas feeling the heat is the Arctic, which has lost an average of 54,000 square kilometers (20,800 square miles) of ice every year since the late 1970s. Unfortunately, the truth is rarely pretty and never simple. Jealousy is a factor in every single type of relationship. It’s something that, no matter what, is impossible to avoid. An international team of researchers, funded in part by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), has an ambitious plan to capture a handful of these genetically similar tigers and reintroduce them back to Central Asia but before we get into this, a little backstory is requ...

The Swedish island of Stora Karls in the Baltic Sea became a nature preserve with regulated hunting back in 1880, and members of the Swedish bourgeoisie frequented the island in the early 1900s. By the 1920s, the private company that owns the island began offering daily tours. Nowadays, Stora Karls still receives thousands of visitors a year, and that means its seabird colonies have been photographed again and again for almost a century. In the absence of long-term scientific records, researchers studying amateur photographs have been able to track the rise and fall of the islands common guillemots (Uria aalge), a fish-eating seabird that nests in breeding colonies. After suffering severe declines, their numbers are currently at a historic high, according to findings publis...

Ants Craft Their Own Powerful Antibiotics By Mixing Different Substances

Many creatures have been revealed to self-medicate, from bears using Osha root paste to repel insects to chimps eating rough leaves to reduce their parasite load. But a new study has now revealed that some wood ants take this to a whole new level: They craft their own antibiotics by mixing two separate substances, the only other creature than humans found to do so. Researchers investigating how the ants keep their nests free of disease have shown how they use a mixture of tree resin and formic acid to produce the antibacterial cocktail that is then used to treat their brood within the colony. Published in the journal Ecology and Evolution, the authors suggest that this could be how packed nestsavoid epidemics that could be devastating for the colonys long-term survival. The saying “It takes a village to raise a child” can be seen in every community around the globe. In addition to parental guidance, children are also shaped by extended family members, teachers, coaches, neighbors, and friends. But why does anyone care about the well-being of a child that isn’t theirs and participate in allomaternal care, also known as cooperative breeding? Wouldn’t it be more advantageous for all parents to only devote their energy and resources on their own offspring? In order to answer those questions, researchers needed to examine the origins of altruism, which is the practice of performing acts for others without expectation of reward. Researchers examined groups of primates to learn more about how concepts like altruism and cooperation evolved

When Robert Workman had the chance to sell his family business for a substantial profit 10 years ago, he decided to use the proceeds for good. It was an exciting and humbling moment, filled with possibility. He'd become interested in sustainability and philanthropy and knew that he wanted to start giving back. The only questions that remained were how and where. So he hit the road looking for inspiration. Traveling to the Congo was an eye-opening moment for Robert. Speaking to aid agencies working on the ground and communicating with the people whose lives they were trying to help, he identified an important need that wasn't being met: portable, sustainable, affordable energy generation. Robert convened a team of engineers and got to work. Goal Zero was the result. Goal Zero offers a...

US Drug Policy Is Contributing To The Spread Of HIV Among African Americans

Scientists have largely agreed that the war on drugs has been nothing short of a monumental failure, and while the catastrophic consequences of this irrational policy are felt by people of all colors and creeds, a new report reveals how US legislations areparticularly damaging to the black community. Pulling together data from a huge number of studies, the researchers find that the nations approach to narcotics increases African Americans risk of contracting HIV. Appearing in the International Journal of Drug Policy, the study introduces a model by which the virus is able to proliferate among African Americans via two main pathways: disproportionate incarceration of blacks for drug-related offenses and harsher sentences for blacks than whites. These factors have been produced by laws like...

A personal look at the present and past Rwanda, twenty years after being devastated by true evil. For the past few days, I debated whether I should write a piece on my travels in the “Land of 1000 Hills.” I knew there would be anniversary look backs, features, and human-interest stories throughout the media. However, I chose to ultimately share some of my experiences in order to spread awareness and pay respect to the lost. This past Monday, April 7th, marked the twenty-year anniversary of the official start of the Rwandan Genocide; a period of three months that claimed the lives of nearly one million innocent people and changed the “Heart of Africa” forever. In 2012, I traveled on an immersion trip to Rwanda for three weeks. During our stay, we lived at ...
