CHÂTEAU DE CHAMBFORD Photograph by Patrick Giraud The royal Château de Chambord at Chambord, Loir-et-Cher, France, is one of the most recognizable châteaux in the world because of its distinct French Renaissance architecture which blends traditional French medieval forms with classical Renaissance structures. The building, which was never completed, was constructed from 1519-1547 by King François I in part to be near to his mistress the Comtesse de Thoury, Claude Rohan, wife of Julien de Clermont, a member of a very important family of France, whose domaine, the château de Muides, was adjacent. Her arms figure in the carved decor of the château. Chambord is the largest château in the Loire Valley; it was built to serve as a hunting lodge for François I, who maintained his roya

Irradiated Turkey, Thermostabilized Yams: Thanksgiving Dinner in Space

There are many wonderful things about being in space. The views. The floating. The many delightful things you can do with water drops. Etc. You know what's less awesome, though? The food. Sure, you can do a lot of things to space food to make it less space-food-y: You can spice it and sweeten it and try to make it simulate, as much as possible, its Earth-bound counterparts. Ultimately, though, the foodstuffs you're consuming are still desiccated/rehydrated/irradiated/thermostabilized. Which is all compounded by the fact that your taste buds are sort of shot by the whole microgravity thing, anyway. But it's Thanksgiving! And we celebrate Thanksgiving with our feasting! So how will the six people currently living on the International Space Station, among them two Americans, give their thanks...

“Cuddle Hormone” May Help Chimpanzees Wage War

We usually think of the hormone oxytocin, known as the "cuddle hormone" or "love hormone", as being released when mothers cuddle their infants, or when lovers cuddle each other. But a new study suggests it may have another use other thanbonding individuals together preparing them for war instead. Researchers have found that as chimpanzees prepare themselves for battle, levels of oxytocin surge, suggesting that the hormone may have a more sinister function. This is not the first time that the hormone has been implicated in aggressive situations. Previous experiments havefound that humans split into teams and presented with a competitive task also show spikes in their oxytocin levels, but this latest study from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropologyhas confirmed a similar th...

Rhinos around the globe are facing an unprecedented threat to their survival. As the slaughter for their horn continues to push them closer to extinction, a rare glimmer of hope has emerged. This week will see the first black rhinos to wander the bush of Rwanda for 10years, after the conservation group African Parks reintroduce up to 20 of the animals to Akagera National Park. Rhinos are one of the great symbols of Africa yet they are severely threatened and are on the decline in many places across the continent due to the extremely lucrative and illegal rhino horn trade, said Peter Fearnhead, the CEO of African Parks, in a statement. The rhinos return to this country, however, is a testament to Rwandas extraordinary commitment to conservation and is a...

Well, it's a good thing I checked his Facebook page after I got the message, because he posted a status a couple hours earlier about his buddy's bachelor party that evening--the same event he invited me to. It also turns out he had been on vacation for those 2 weeks and this was his first night back. Is this just a case of him being overly eager to get back in touch? Or was he ...

A new instrument designed to observe regions near black holes is almost up and running and we can expect its first spectacular viewslater this year. The instrument is called GRAVITY, and it has been installed on the European Southern Observatorys (ESO) Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile. It creates a virtual telescope 200 meters (660 feet) across by combining light from multiple telescopes at the VLT site, via a process called interferometry. GRAVITY will be used to study the extremely strong gravitational fields that exist close to the supermassive black hole at the center of our galaxy, named Sagittarius A*. Specifically, it will look towards the event horizon the theoretical boundary to the inner black hole where gravity is so strong that nothing, not even light, can ...

A Beginners Guide To Sex Differences In The Brain

Asking whether there are sex differences in the human brain is a bit like asking whether coffee is good for you scientists cant seem to make up their minds about the answer. In 2013, for example, news stories proclaimed differences in the brain so dramatic that men and women might almost be separate species. Then in 2015, headlines announced that there are in fact no sex differences in the brain at all. Even as I write this, more findings of differences are coming out. So which is it? Are there differences between mens and womens brains or not? What Is A Sex Difference? To clear up the confusion, we need to consider what the term sex difference really means in the scientific literature. To illustrate the concept, Ive used a web-based tool I helped develop, SexDifference.o...

7 Amazing ‘Superpowers’ That Humans Can Develop To Deal With Extreme Conditions

Compared to most other animals, the average human seems fairly weak. We live in climate-controlled bubbles and eat food that we purchase in stores. Most of us would have a hard time surviving in the wild for even a week. And yet, Homo sapiens were able to conquer the globe, spreading to the far corners of the planet before the existence of modern technology. Our ancestors traveled the world, traversing deserts like the Sahara and freezing regions like Siberia, scaling mountain ranges like the Alps and Himalayas, and even crossing segments of the ocean to populate new lands. But the ability to accomplish all that wasn't due to superpowers that were genetically lost, as Scott Carney, the author of "What Doesn't Kill Us: How Freezing Water, Extreme Altitu...

Receiving a cancer diagnosis is devastating on so many levels. Unfortunately, even with the advances in modern medicine, cancer still affects a shocking number of people and claims several hundred thousand lives annually. Treatment options are universally unpleasant (surgery, chemotherapy, radiation), and chances of survival are still basically a roll of the dice. Then there's the emotional impact the news will have on your loved ones, plus the financial strain the disease is likely to put on you/them. We're all familiar with the old saying, "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade." I've heard it said countless times over the years, as I'm sure you have too. I can honestly say, though, that in all that time, no one ever made me really stop to think about it quite like a 90-year-old wom...

Things are looking pretty bleak right now. It's thought that the planet has lost around half of its wildlife in the last 40 years, as numbers are frequently decimated. But if you thought that the worlds creatures might be able to catch a break, youre sadly mistaken. Biologists have now announced that by the end of the century it is likely that 50 percent of all species will face extinction. This prediction was announced as biologists, conservationists, and economists gathered at the Vatican for a conference on How To Save the Natural World on Which We Depend. It may seem slightly odd that the Catholic Church is hosting such a symposium, but Pope Francis has been incredibly vocal about the responsibility that the planets 1.2 billion Roman Catholics have towards protecting the environment f...

I’m not endorsing this view, but I was struck by its optimism. (A war game held by the U.S. military this month came to the opposite conclusion, according to the New York Times: A strike would likely lead to a wider war that could include the U.S.) Another theory making the rounds was that Obama has so deeply internalized the argument that Israel has the sovereign right to defend itself against a threat to its existence that an Israeli attack, even one launched against U.S. wish...

These ‘Hunger Games’ Fan Theories Might Change The Way You Look At The Series

There are lots of juicy, seemingly well-researched fan theories out there. Here’s three of my favorites. 1. Foxface’s Death View this image › nickelodeon.tumblr.com / Via smosh.com Theory: Foxface actually committed suicide Oh, this one is so dang good! Redditor circlemanfan proposes an incredibly plausible idea that Foxface’s death was actually a suicide. Here’s some of the points he makes: It’s stated in Catching Fire that in the training station for edible plants, only the plants that are going to be featured in the games are described. Foxface is described and shown as incredibly intelligent. Wouldn’t someone this smart know to memorize all of the poisonous plants listed? She knew that her strategy was to not attack, so wouldnR...

Ethereal Wire Fairy Sculptures by Robin Wight

Artist Robin Wight creates incredible stainless steel wire fairy sculptures that enchant any garden or outdoor area they grace. Based out of Staffordshire, England, the artist’s handmade sculptures are uniquely crafted to their environment. Wight was first inspired by an inexplicable encounter a few years back which he recalls on his website: “A couple of years ago, while trying out my new camera, I took the picture (below) in the woods at the bottom of my garden. It was only later when looking at the results that I spotted the figure in the tree. It’s obviously a trick of the light coming through the trees. What else could it be? Whatever it is, it captured my imagination and inspired me to use the idea in my sculpture.” Wight is available for commissions and ...

Asteroid That Killed The Dinosaurs Helped Forests Bloom

The Chicxulub bolide impacted Earth 66 million years ago with the force of 10 teratons of TNT, taking out all the non-avian dinosaurs and about half of all North American plant species. Now, researchers studying leaf fossils reveal that the dino-booming bolide decimated evergreen plants far more than their deciduous peers -- the latter were able to respond more rapidly to chaotic, post-apocalyptic conditions. Sometimes the “live fast, die young” strategy beats out the “slow but steady” one. Their findings are published in PLOS Biology this week.  "When you look at forests around the world today, you don't see many forests dominated by evergreen flowering plants," Benjamin Blonder from the University of Arizona says in a news release. "Instead, they are dominated by d

Price Of Ivory In China Crashes As Demand Continues To Fall

The demand for ivory in China has been one of the principal drivers of the catastrophic decline in elephants across much of Africa. Few areas of the continent have evaded the onslaught, as poachers target the animals for their tusks. But it looks like things might be about to change. A new reportby the conservation group Save the Elephantshas found that the wholesale price of elephant tusks has crashed by almost two-thirds in the last three years. While in early 2014 the average price for raw ivory was around $2,100 per kilogram, by late 2015 this had slipped to $1,100 per kilogram. Now, the latest data from early 2017 has found that this figure has fallen even lower, with a kilogram now costing $730. There are a number of different factors thought to ...
