Did Seaweed Help Our Early Ancestors Become Human?

Seaweed is much more than thatgross stuff that gets stuck on your leg at the beach or that green thing in your sushi. This unlikely plant might have provideda helpfulstep in our evolutionary origins millions of years ago, according to anew study. Scientists from the University of Southern Denmark have carried out research thatindicates a variety of seaweed could have provided the vital nutrients needed to develop a complex brain millions of years ago, eventually pushing us from primitive hominoid ancestor to modern human. Seaweed is packed with essential nutrients for brain development in present-day humans, namely taurine, magnesium, zinc, vitamin B12, iodine, and poly-unsaturated fatty-acids. Many of these nutrients have been linked with central nervous system development and can help i...

New Research Suggests Cocaine Can Make Brain Cells Eat Themselves

Cocaine might give users a buzz, but it could also be making brain cells eat themselves, according to new research. While normally an important survival mechanism for the cell, at high enough doses the drug seems to make this process go into overdrive, causing cells to digest their innards to such an extent that they die. More than just contributing to our knowledge of how this drug leads to its notable toxic effects, the work could potentially offer scientists a new treatment avenue to explore. Inhibiting this pathway with a different drug was found to protect neurons against cocaine-triggered death, raising the possibility that the same agent or something related may represent a viable therapy for cocaine abuse. The study has been published in Proceedings of the National ...

During all this time she helped more than 350 cats. Show Full Text "For example , I am going down the street - when I see a cat, I just can not pass away," says Zanda, and it could happen any day. "The first thing I do is take the cat to the vet so the vet could check cat's health and determine cats age," explains Zanda the first steps after she finds small animals. One of our closest evolutionary relatives has just been pushed ever closer to the brink of extinction. The latest review of the worlds species has found that the threats faced by the Eastern gorilla are now so great that the ape is considered critically endangered, meaning that currently four out of the six great ape species are close to being wiped off the planet altogether. The main threat to the gorillas survival has been due to illegal hunting for their meat and body parts. The Eastern gorilla (Gorilla beringei), which is the largest primate in the world, is actually divided into two subspecies. The more famous mountain gorilla (G. beringei beringei) has been hovering close to extinction for decades, but has been the focus of concerted conservation efforts since Diane Fossey first star...

Massive Die-Offs of Fish, Birds, and Marine Invertebrates Becoming More Frequent

Massive mortality events (MMEs) occur when large numbers of populations die within a narrow time frame, due to disease, overhunting, habitat destruction, or environmental factors. The largest study ever performed on these die-offs have found that these events are becoming increasingly common among species of fish, birds, and marine invertebrates over the last 70 years. Stephanie Carlson of UC Berkeley was senior author of the paper, which was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. "This is the first attempt to quantify patterns in the frequency, magnitude and cause of such mass kill events," Carlson said in a press release. Carlson’s team hunted the scientific literature and analyzed 727 MMEs, spanning almost 2,500 species since 1940. Ulti

Sound Waves Break The Blood-Brain Barrier

Uncategorized
The blood-brain barrier is essential to our survival, but sometimes it can be a major obstacle to life-saving medical treatment. French company CarThera claim to have found a way to open the barrier when needed, shutting it again thereafter. The barrier is made from endothelial cells that keep the blood and the brain's extracellular fluids apart. Its job is to allow through the things the brain needs from the blood, such as water, oxygen and sugar, while keeping out neurotoxins. However, just like the junk mail filter on your email, sometimes it fails on both fronts – letting through things it shouldn't and keeping out some that are necessary. All the large-molecule drugs with potential to treat brain conditions such as tumors have trouble penetrating the blood-brai

Would you take a painkiller that had been developed from human saliva? A recent study suggests you might in future. Pain is an essential sensation. Last year it was reported that over threemillion people a year die prematurely due to air pollution. From this, they found that more than half of these premature deaths occurred in just two countries: India and China. As both nations continue to develop, the number of deaths from air pollution in these countries is expected to climb. One of the surprises to us is that air pollution is one of the leading risk factors for death and disease around the world, explains Michael Brauer, who presented the research at the meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The mountain chicken frogs on the Caribbean island of Montserrat are in a perilous and seemingly irredeemable situation. Its worth questioning whether attempted recovery is even worth the effort. After all, this species, one of the worlds largest frogs, will have to recover from just two individuals. Hunting, habitat destruction from the 1995 volcanic eruption, and the arrival of the recent fatal fungal infection, Chytridiomycosis (or chytrid), has devastated these frogs. Rarely has any species naturally recovered once reduced to a few individuals, without some sort of human assistance. The Seychelles kestrel is one exception. Species declines are largely caused by human activity, whether that be through direct killing, destruction of natural habitats, or the introduction o...

In 1996, a mass shooting took 35 lives in Australia. Immediately after, newly elected Prime Minister John Howard decided that something needed to change. A mere 12 days after the tragedy, the government drafted and agreed on the legislation. This led to the National Firearms Programme Implementation Act of 1996. The new act was fairly intense. It restricted the private ownership of high-capacity semi-automatic shotguns, semi-automatic rifles, and pump-action shotguns. While guns were certainly a part of the culture (and Howard's plan was met with some objection), most Australians were actually for the legislation because they were so horrified at the loss of innocent lives. Howard didn't just disrupt the overarching gun laws, though. He also confiscated private weapons. Citizens took ...

For the first time, chimpanzee mothers have been filmed teaching their children to use tools in the wild. The mothers took time away from their own hunting to show their offspring how to use twigs to capture termites. Wild chimpanzees are exceptional tool users, but in contrast to humans, there has been little evidence to date that adult chimpanzees teach youngsters tool skills, said Stephanie Musgrave, a graduate student at Washington University, St. Louis. Although research earlier this year proved human children spontaneously adopt tool use without being taught, learning is often essential. Likewise, dolphins' use of sponges for hunting is thought to be passed from mother to child, although some dolphin genius must have come up with the idea. Humans, Not Climate Change, To Blame For Ice Age Animal Extinction

Uncategorized
Our last glacial period lasted from about 115,000-12,500 years ago. By the end, 177 large mammal species had gone extinct. There has been considerable debate over the last half century regarding what caused the loss of these animals, including saber-tooth cats, mastadons, and giant sloths. While many have argued that these animals simply weren’t able to adapt to the warmer climate, others blame human activity. A new study led by Jens-Christian Svenning of Aarhus University has strongly suggested that humans are squarely responsible for the disappearance of megafauna during the last 100,000 years. 7 more photos of black Victorians who prove that history is not as white as people think.

Back in late October, I wrote a story about 17 photos of black Victorians who showed how history really looked. I scoured various online archives, historical records, and so forth to dig up what I could about the subjects of these stunning photographs, which I hoped would challenge people's historical perceptions of race, fashion, and social norms. The reader response was tremendous. Hundreds of thousands of people read and shared the story. People love to warn you not to read the comments (and sometimes rightly so), but in this case, the comments were downright inspiring. The most remarkable comments came from readers who shared photos and stories of their own relatives who lived through that same era. Today, I'd like to introduce you to some of those folks. 1. Dinosaur Head Ornaments May Have Been Used For Sexual Selection

Sexual selection is one of the driving forces of evolutionary biology. Specific features on certain animals have evolved specifically to attract mates, and although we can observe this in living species, trying to find these physical traits in extinct species proves far more challenging. A new paper published in the journal Palaeontologia Electronica claims to have found a physical example of this in a horned, frilled dinosaur after analyzing nearly 40 different specimens. A 2010 paper notes that sexual dimorphism major differences in appearance between male and female members of a species has never been definitively demonstrated in non-avian dinosaurs. Nevertheless, several paleontologists have tried over the years. Some have cited a difference between the sexes of the t...

So, whats it all about? Well, we dont know at the moment. Previous announcements have concerned planets similar to Earth that might be habitable, although we dont know if we can expect the same thing this time around. The fact NASA references discoveries, rather than a single discovery, may mean it is a broader look at the Kepler mission as a whole. We also cant discern much from the panel of experts involved....

Every time we watch a season premiere of Pretty Little Liars we are reminded why this show is so epic.   The noise produced by our everyday devices are disrupting the internal compass of migratory birds. When exposed to weak electromagnetic fields, birds flying at night over urban areas lose their sense of migratory direction. For decades, we’ve debated whether or not electric or magnetic fields affect human health, and this study reveals the stark effect our electronics use have on the function of an entire sensory system in another animal.    Many night-migratory songbirds rely on Earth’s weak magnetic field to orient themselves on their migration paths. But everything we plug in makes electromagnetic noise. A video showing Japanese pygmy squidsplatting their prey with ink before attacking it casts doubt on existing theories about how cephalopods use their ink. Rather than squirting it as a defensive mechanism to help them escape predators, the footage suggests that it could also form part of their offensive weaponry. Numerous species have previously been observed using ink to evadethreats, although a new study in the journal Marine Biology is the first to document this type of predatory behavior. To conduct the study, researchers placed Japanese pygmy squidin tanks with three different species of shrimp, and observed their mode of attack. 20 Things That Make Iceland The Perfect Off The Grid Vacation

There are so many things to do in Iceland! Where do you even start? From the obvious to the more obscure, and possibly even impossible (see point 20), here is the ultimate list of things to do in Iceland. 1. Swim in the Blue Lagoon The most popular attraction in Iceland is actually man-made, but that doesn’t deter the crowds from flocking to bathe in the milky blue waters of theetherealBlue Lagoon. 2. Buyan Icelandic sweater Woolen Icelandic sweaters, orlopapeysa, are worn byevery second person in Iceland, so buy one if you want to blend inwith the locals. I bought mine at the Kolaporti flea market in Reykjavikand no, I haven’t worn it (Australia’s climate is strangely not similar to Iceland’s at all), but, yes, it is the cutest thing I own in my wardrobe. It&rsquo...

Polar bear cub at Toronto Zoo has first experience with snow

Uncategorized
A couple weeks ago, we introduced you to a polar bear cub named Remy. tHe's currently under special care at the Toronto Zoo. A new video has been released that shows the cub as he is introduced to snow for the first time. Though he is nearly three months old, Remy hasn’t had any previous experience with the snow due to health concerns. Born a triplet, his two siblings died within 48 hours of birth and his health began to decline as well. Fearing that the cub would have a similar fate, he had to be taken away from his mother and the exhibit at the zoo in order to undergo constant treatment and care for the first three months of life, which are the most crucial to the cub’s survival. Remy’s health has improved while under the care of the zoo’s Wildlife Health Centre and

As Twitchy reported this morning, NYC mayor Nanny Michael Bloomberg called for new gun control measures and pressured President Obama on Twitter to reinstitute the assault weapons ban. Sen. Have you seen anyone with a semicolon tattoo? Here’s what it’s about.

Have you seen anyone with a tattoo like this? If not, you may not be looking close enough. They're popping up... ...everywhere. Photos by The Semicolon Tattoo Project. That's right: the semicolon. It's a tattoo that has gained popularity in recent years, but unlike other random or mystifying trends, this one has a serious meaning behind it. (And no, it's not just the mark of a really committed grammar nerd.) My co-worker Parker's photo of her own semicolon tattoo. This mark represents mental health struggles and the importance of suicide prevention. Project Semicolon was born from a social media movement in 2013. They describe themselves as a "movement dedicated to presenting hope and love to those who are struggling with depression, suicide, addictio...

Dramatic Footage Shows Polar Bear Cannibalizing A Cub

Uncategorized
A new video released by National Geographic shows a male polar bear pursuing a female and her young cub across the Arctic landscape, before killing the infant for food. While this footage is unique, the reality is that this type of event is nothing new or unusual, and polar bear cannibalism has been reported on numerous previous occasions by scientists studying the animals. Despite being a top predator, polar bears are constantly at the mercy of the sea ice, which provides them with a platform for hunting seals. Seasonal fluctuations in sea ice levels therefore have a major impact on the ease with which the bears are able to access their prey. As such, the winter months tend to be the most fruitful in terms of hunting, although as the ice begins to thin during spring and su...
Two-Headed Snake Discovered in Turkey

Two-Headed Snake Discovered in Turkey

Uncategorized
A farmer in northeastern Turkey recently discovered a bicephalic snake; that is, it has two heads. This phenomenon occurs when monozygotic twins fail to separate completely, so it’s really a case of conjoined twins and not a mutation that caused two heads to grow. When these types of animals occur out in the wild, they tend not to live very long. With two brains governing one body, movement isn’t always smooth and deliberate. Instead, they can disagree about how to move, making it fairly difficult to catch prey. This anomalous anatomy also makes them fairly easy prey for larger predators as well. However, two-headed snakes receiving proper captive care are able to live full, relatively normal lives and even give birth to normal offspring. The two-week-old snake was
