There’s a reason dogs have been so close to humans for thousands of years. They are great hunters, and together, people and dogs are an powerful force in the wild.  This dog isn’t necessarily a hunting dog, just the family pet. But instinct is difficult to suppress, and she caught a fish on her first try when she was out by the lake with her people friends.  She obediently dropped the fist instead of enjoying the meal, only for her human friend to accidently knock it back into the water. Breakthrough Listen, an international collaborative project to look for signals from extraterrestrial civilizations, has employed its high-precision instruments to look at a one-of-a-kind astronomical event, the fast radio burst (FRB) 121102. FRBs are brief and extremely energetic pulses of radio waves whose mysterious origin has puzzled scientists for the last two years. FRB 121102 is even more special, as it’s the only one that repeats itself. This characteristic has allowed for detailed studies of the source, with Breakthrough Listen detecting 15 high-frequency pulses during just two 30-minute scans of that patch of the sky. This suggests that it’s in a more active state. “Bursts from this source have never been seen...

A photographer has taken a trip into the Russian wilderness to searchfor the remains of mammoths with rather startlingphotographic results. Amos Chapple documented his trip last year on his website, where he headedinto the heart of Siberia with a group of local hunters known as tuskers to track down some of these ancient beasts. Mammothsare thought to have thrived in Siberia until about 12,000 years ago, when a warming climate killed them off. But many remnants of the creatures remain and some people will pay a high price for them. The practice is controversial. The tuskers use damaging methods to find hidden bones, firing jets of water into cliffs at high pressure. This sends a slurry of water and earth into nearby rivers, causing rising silt levels...

There's a lot to be said about the spiritual meaning behind the the fall equinox. In fact, fall being marked by the autumn equinox was known as the holiday of Mabon in the Pagan calendar. It marked a spiritual celebration to honor of the change of seasons, which used to pose a massive challenge to our survival as humans. Today though, th...

Sure, she didn't always want to associate with her nerdy little sis, but when we did hang out it was special and I'm eternally grateful to have had my BFF there. If you are close enough in age to your sister that you were able to go to high school together, you know that time in your life was important. Even if looking back on it now you may think, What was I even doing? And what was up with that hair choice? You had your sister there when you made these bad choices, and she helped you throu...

Before now, it was believed a whale's call is generated by a resonating sound in the chambers of the animal's upper respiratory system. If this was the case,&...

This Dog Was Tied Up In The Woods, But There Was Something Even More Heartbreaking

Many hunters in Greece consider their hunting dogs to be more like tools of their trade and not living, breathing creatures. Unfortunately, this often results in their abuse and neglect. One night, animal rescuer Valia Orfanidou received a call about an abandoned dog in the mountains. She drove through the dark forest to find him, and made a sad discovery when she finally did. Tied to a tree and left to starve was a nine-year-old hunting dog with a minor limp. Orfanidou freed the abandoned animal and guided him back to her car, hoping to give him a second chance at life. A brave mongoose decides take on its aggressors in a video posted by Barcroft TV. The battle of the carnivores wasn't exactly even, with a two kilogram mongoose putting up a fight against four 100 kilogram lions.  The incident took place in Masaai Mara National Park, Kenya, when photographer Jerome Guillaumot stumbled across four lions and one feisty mongoose. While the fight for survival was filmed in 2011, the video was only recently released. Mongooses are small mammals that live in burrows and feed on animals such as rodents, birds, reptiles, insects and worms. Some species also eat fruit, nuts and seeds. The most famous example of the audacity of mongooses is when they attack venomous cobras, but filming a mongoose fight a lion is exceptionally rare.

A new photo album made from hundreds of images of more than 70,000 galaxies represents one of the most detailed galaxy studies ever compiled, spanning a period of 12 billion years. The album, which my colleagues and I compiled, allows us to track the family tree of galaxies over more than 90% of the age of the universe. We used the 6.5-metre Magellan Baade Telescope and FourStar infrared camera to snap these images over 45 nights. On Sunday, the strident marine conservation group announced they will stop sending ships to the Southern Ocean in Antarctica because they can’t keep up with the technology of Japanese whalers. Although they will stop direct action against whaling vessels, they say they will continue to work towards stopping whaling operations in the Southern Ocean. Sea Shepherd claims that Japan is now using military surveillance and satellite technology to keep tabs on its ships’ movements. This means that the whaling ships are able to avoid Sea Shepherds’ vessels with ease. ...

The position of a gene on its chromosome influences its expression. Although this idea has been dawning on biologists for many years, confirmation has been elusive. A new study sheds some light on the way neighboring DNA alter how active a gene is and the extent to which it mutates. An early view of genetics, still often taught at high school, holds that each gene single-handedly determines the protein that will be produced and therefore the biological consequences. Mutations in the genes DNA may alter the protein produced, and dominant versions may suppress the recessive ones, but the chromosomal environment was considered irrelevant. As weve learned in recent years, things are far more complex. What was once termed junk DNA plays a big part in regula...

10 Smart Tips for Buying an HDTV

For all the incredible things our phones and tablets do, everybody wants to spend at least a little time kicking back on the couch in front of a big screen. Some of us want to spend a lot of time doing that. In either case, it's important to have an HDTV that delivers the experience you want — whether that's 8 hours a day or 8 hours a year. On average, people buy a new TV every seven or eight years, so the set you buy will be something you're stuck with for a while. You don't want to buy an HDTV that ends up obsolete in just a few years. Or worse, something ugly. An HDTV is still a pretty large expense. While the cost of a typical flat-screen has fallen drastically over the last few years, the cheapest models tend to skimp on features and may not give you as good a picture. At least in tod

Modern Humans Were In Sumatra At Least 63,000 Years Ago

Uncategorized
Re-examination of two teeth found in a Sumatran cave in the 1880s has filled a major gap in our picture of human migrations, revealing that modern humans were living in Indonesia sometime between 63,000 and 73,000 years ago. Just a few weeks ago, evidence placed humans in northern Australia 65,000 years ago. Even before that, evidence of the presence of modern humans in Australia predated anything found in South East Asia. Yet to have got there from Africa, we must have come through Indonesia. (Unlike trapdoor spiders, humans didn't raft across the Indian Ocean). In Nature, scientists from Indonesia, Australia, and Europe combine to show that two teeth found at Lida Ajer, eastern Sumatra, came frommodern humans, and were found in a layer of sediment 63...

The issue is only set to get worse too because of a decreasing number of children per household, declines in marriage, and an aging population. Being connected to others socially is widely considered a fundamental human need crucial to both well-being and survival. Extreme examples show infants in custodial care who lack human contact fail to thrive and often die, and indeed, social isolation or solitary confinemen...

The autopsy was carried out once again by the Dyer Island Conservation Trust team, led by White Shark biologist Alison Towner. It is one of the earliest examples of traditional (hand-drawn) animation, and considered by film historians to be the first animated cartoon The film, in all of its wild transformations, is a direct tribute to the by-then forgotten Incoherent movement. The title is a reference to the “fantasmograph”, a mid-Nineteenth Century variant of the magic lantern that projected ghostly images that floated across the walls. The film was created by drawing each frame on paper and then shooting each frame onto negative film, which gave the picture a blackboard look. It was made up of 70

7 shockingly nice moments from the season finale of ‘Game of Thrones.’

Welcome to “A Song of Nice and Fire” Upworthy’s weekly series recapping one of the most brutal shows on TV. Since brutality is not really in our wheelhouse, Eric March has taken it upon himself to dig deep, twist and turn, and squint really hard to see if he can find the light of kindness in all the darkness. He may not always succeed, but by gosh if he won’t try his best. Here’s what he found on this week’s "Game of Thrones." Welp. Image via HBO. All nice things must end. True to form, this season of "Game of Thrones" concluded as all seasons must — with kindness, empathy, and respect. Also, one hilariously brutal murder. But that's not why we're here! Let's get to it. 1. The King's Landing grounds crew does a great job installing the chupp...

After the Philando Castile verdict, his classmates raised thousands in scholarship money.

High school classmates of Philando Castile were gutted last week when the police officer who killed him on the side of a suburban Minnesota street was found not guilty. Protesters gathered in November outside the St. Paul school where Philando Castile worked. Stephen Maturen/Getty Images. In the week since, several of them have turned their outrage into action, raising over $5,000 for a scholarship in Castile's name. "We really didnt ask for it. People just didnt know what to do with their grief and all of that," says Abby Heuckendorf, who went to school with Castile from fourth grade on and is a member of Central Honors Philando, the group that established the fund. Heuckendorf and a half-dozen others who grew up with Castile established the scholarship fund shortly after his deat...

This Powerful Video On Refugees Will Make You Cry In Less Than 4 Minutes

It’s long been said that the eyes are the window to the soul. Perhaps this is why many of us are so reluctant to make eye contact with strangers — we don’t want to give away too much. But maybe we should give it a shot more often, the results might change our lives. Twenty years ago, psychologist Arthur Aron discovered that when people stare into each others eyes for just four minutes without looking away, it has the potential to bring them much closer, and could even make them fall in love. In a video produced by Amnesty International Poland and the Polish ad agency DDB&Tribal, recently arrived refugees from Syria and Somalia looked deep into the eyes of people from Belgium, Italy, Germany, Poland and the UK. What followed was incredible, and will definitely bring ...

Baby Dolphin Dies After Beachgoers Pass It Around For Photos

Uncategorized
No selfie is worth an animal’s life. This should go without saying, yet again and again, beachgoers can’t resist touching stranded sea creatures when they are at their most vulnerable. This time, a baby dolphin died on a beach in Spain over the weekend, after the stranded calf was spotted struggling in the shallows and a crowd rushed to take photographs and touch it in Mojacar, Almeria. Spanish authorities alerted Equinac, a non-profit organization that rescues stranded creatures, after the lifeguard became overwhelmed by the crowd that formed and was unable to protect the creature.  "Many people are unable to feel empathy for a living being which is frightened, starving hungry, without its mother and terrified,” wrote Equin...

A record-breaking campaign this past Sunday saw 1.5 million volunteers plant more than 66 million trees in a 12 hour span across the large central state of Madhya Pradesh in India. The previous world record was set last year and saw 49.3 million saplings planted over a 24-hour period in Uttar Pradesh, Northern India. The state-sponsored initiatives are in response to the Paris Climate Change Conference where India vowed to increase their forest coverage 5+ million hectares by 2030. The Indian Government has pledged $6.2 billion toward the agreement, encouraging states to join the effort. [source] According to the Independent: Observers from Guinness World Records also monitored Sunday’s plantation and are expected to confirm in the coming weeks that the effort set a n...

Hundreds protest in Red Square, with few arrests

http://twitter.com/#!/kozlovsky_en/status/189007207965265920 Protesters gathered in Red Square earlier today in opposition to the Putin government. The protest movement has been ongoing since the elections in March, which the opposition claims were fraudulent. The claims go back at least as far as the end of last year, when tens of thousands took to the Moscow streets after videos of alleged election fraud hit the internet. Today’s protests were peaceful and, surprisingly, uneventful. The only arrests came when a few of the several hundred tried to pitch a tent by the walls of the Kremlin. Oleg Koslovsky, who describes himself as a “Russian civil activist in his Twitter profile, broadcast several pictures from the protest, which at one point took the form of a great circle danc...

Coral Fish Are Less Stressed When They Find Their Shoal Mates

Uncategorized
Nobody wants to be alone, which is why as humans, we are fascinated by the idea of soul mates. According to new aww-inducing research, the same is also true for coral fish, although it's "shoal-mates" not soul mates they're searching for. According to the study, published in the Journal of Experimental Biology, coral fish get stressed and lose weight when separated from their shoal-mates, affecting their chance of survival. "We have suspected that shoaling fish gain a 'calming effect' from living in a group. But up until now we have been unable to measure how widely spread this effect is in individual fish," said Lauren Nadler, lead author of the study from James Cook University, in a statement. Nadler and her team from the ARC Centre for Excellence for Coral Reef Studies in Queensland, A...

ShareTweet Tonight, I went to our local chapter of M.E.N.Da pregnancy loss support meeting. And you know what? People are saying the same old ignorant, hurtful things to women having a pregnancy loss as they did when I first had mineand probably have said since the dawn of time. I know I cant prevent every single woman out there from having to hear these hurtful comments. But I sure can do my part to spread awareness. So if you come across any woman who has lost a baby at ANY stage in pregnancy or following birthplease do the universe a massive favor, and steer clear of saying any of these fivethings. (Or anything that even closely resembles them.) #5 At least you were early. Maybe you truly feel that you are doing this woman a favor to remind her tha...

Molly And Issa Prove A Real Bestie Will Stalk Your Ex On Last Night’s ‘Insecure’

Ah, Molly and Issa continue to prove that their best friend relationship is the one that really matters on the instant cult classic that is HBO'sInsecure. Sure, Issa is pining to make up with her now ex-boyfriend Lawrence and sure, they had an epic episode of quickie hate-sex on the couch in the last episode. But Molly and Issa are straight up iconic. Nope, it's not too early to use the I word. Only iconic best friends do what Molly does for Issain the second episode ofseason 2. Issa has been sick and confused ever since she and Lawrence had breakup sex and no, he still hasn't really been talking to her. When she told Molly what happened on her couch (while Molly is sitting on said couch, by the way), Molly had the same WTF reaction that Twitter had last week. Welcome to the WTH are they ...

Life May Be A Guide To The Evolution Of The Cosmos Heres How

Does humanity exist to serve some ultimate, transcendent purpose? Conventional scientific wisdom says no. As physicist Lawrence Krauss puts it in his latest book, our evolution on this planet is just a cosmic accident. If you believe otherwise, many would accuse you of suffering from some kind of religious delusion. I dont think this view of life is necessarily correct. Despite this, my worldview is entirely naturalistic it doesnt rely on invoking any supernatural powers. And I usually do agree with conventional scientific wisdom. However, I know of one possible mechanism by which life could, in fact, be endowed with a natural purpose. The idea, just published in the journal Complexity, is highly speculative but worth considering. In biological natura...

Unexpected Reptilian Survivor of Dinosaurs’ Destruction

Uncategorized
The Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction event that wiped out the dinosaurs may not have been quite as global as previously thought, judging by some discoveries from Argentina. New Zealand is host to two reptile species that have long been thought to be the only members of the Rhynchocephalia to survive the mass extinction 66 million years ago. Now, however, it has been discovered that at least one other member of this order made it through the apocalypse to last at least another 23 million years. The Mesozoic era is called the age of reptiles, not just for the dinosaurs that dominate our imagination, but for all the other reptilian species that flourished at the time. Among these were the Rynchocephalia, which looked like lizards and occupied many of the same ecological...

Well-Meaning New Zealander’s Are Killing Endangered Birds By Accident

Well-meaning residents of New Zealands capital may be killing the city's endangered birds with kindness. It turns out that the chicks of the kk birds that live in Wellington are failing to survive because locals are feeding the parents the wrong type of food. Anurban ecology team for Wellington have been keeping track of the birds that live in the parks and reserves surrounding the city, and found that last year 80 percent of the chicks failed to make it to adulthood. Investigating this devastating survival rate, they found that residents feeding the adults food such as nuts, seeds, and bread, which then go on to regurgitate it for their offspring, is causing the chicks to develop metabolic b...
