Firefighters are killed every year by wildfires. These scientists want to change that.

In November 2016, huge forest fires swept through eight southern states in the U.S. They burned more than 119,000 acres and shrouded regions from Alabama up to West Virginia in smoke. Parks shut down, residents evacuated, and more than 6,300 firefighters were deployed to the area to try to contain these raging fires. As devastating as these fires were, wildfires are actually pretty common. On average, the United States sees more than 100,000 wildfires every year in fact, the U.S. Wildfire Tracker shows 45 large fires burning in the United States at the time of this writing. This means that right now, firefighters are putting their lives on the line as they respond to wildland fires. And because of climate change, the fires are becoming more frequent, intense, and long-burning makin...

What makes a kangaroo a kangaroo? You might immediately think of their ability to hop, but according to a study published in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology, ancient kangaroos weren't able to hop at all. This new research also conjures up a particularly striking image: Millions of years ago, small ancestral kangaroos lived alongside crawling, fanged cousins. Paleontologists at the University of Queensland have uncovered two new species of extinct, non-hopping kangaroos within ancient Australian fossil deposits. When they lived, they were roughly the size of a pademelon, a small, modern marsupial. The two new species, Cookeroo bulwidarri which lived 23 million years ago and Cookeroo hortusensis which lived 18-20 million years ago were recognized as distinct specie...

Scientists Reprogram Skin Cells To Hunt Down And Shrink Brain Tumors

Uncategorized
Brain cancers can be really tricky to treat. Some, such as glioblastomas, spread roots through the brain tissue, meaning they are often impossible to remove surgically, leading to tragically low survival rates. But researchers are working on a way touse stem cells to track down the cancer, kill it, and then melt it away. By doing this, theyve managed to shrink brain tumors in mice to2 to 5 percent of their original size. The trick has already been tried before using neural stem cells to hunt down and deliver cancer-killing drugs to tumors in mice. But there is a problem: It's tricky to getneural stem cells from humans. The safest way of doing this would be to take adult cells and then induce them in a two-step process to become neural stem cells. This, however, takes time. Speed is essent...

Among the many majestic winged creatures to be found in Indonesian skies is the Javan hawk-eagle, which became the countrys national bird in 1993. Yet according to the study which appears in the journal Forktail wild populations are now struggling as the number of birds captured each year is roughly equivalent to the number that are born. How Lessons From Past Extinctions Can Help Save Madagascars Lemurs

Uncategorized
It is common knowledge that the world faces an historic threat to biodiversity and natural species everywhere. This threat, caused by climate change, loss of habitats and over-exploitation among other things may be new. But it is not unprecedented. Extinctions have occurred throughout geological history, some of them relatively recently. A lot can be learnt from these past events to help us prevent future extinctions. And scientists are doing just that. One example comes from Madagascar, the African island that is home to the lemur. These emblematic species occur only in Madagascar. They are of high conservation priority, and are also incredibly charismatic. In fact, Time magazine recently named them the new pop-culture star of the mammal world. They supplanted sloths, in...

In Bozeman, Montana you'll find one brave man by the name of Casey Anderson. Casey founded and runs the Montana Grizzly Encounter, a sanctuary for orphaned bears, or those coming out of captivity who need a home. These bears can not be released into the wild, as they lack many important survival skills necessary to make it without human care. Casey is a wildlife naturalist and hosts America the Wild with Casey Anderson and Expedition Wild for Nat Geo WILD. He has been rescuing grizzly bears since 2002, when he saved a bear he calls Brutus. Casey not only cares for the bears at his sanctuary, but he works to educate them, too. That's right, he teaches bears!  In our video we meet a cute orphaned cub named Bella. She was rescued from Alaska when she was found alone and no one knew what...

It's apparent that the two famous Carrie's of premium cable are significantly different from each other. While one spends her free time hunting terrorists and trying to protect the nation from major threats to human safety and national security, the other spends just as much time hunting men, writing a weekly sex column, and protecting her besties from wearing fugly shoes. But that doesn't mean our two favorite Carries don't have anything in common. I mean, they're both racked with infinite wisdom on important subject matters of life, love and friendship. But while Carrie Bradshaw tends to go on and on with long drawn out conclusions about shit so that by the end no one knows what the fuck she's even saying, Carrie Mathison tends to do this in fewer words. The dramatic improvements in survival for children with cancer depend on these clinical trials, and these trials depend on parents understanding the possible risks and benefits involved. As humans, the concept of parenting and care giving is often ingrained so far into our lives that it is easy to take it for granted. On a recent visit to the zoo, my two-year-old recently asked, but wheres the tortoises mummy? She made the quite reasonable assumption that all animals come in nuclear families, and are just as committed parents as are most of us humans. Perhaps we take parental care for granted because we are mammals, and every mammal species cares for offspring at least to some extent. But aside from us mammals, most species including almost all tortoises actually abandon their offspring as soon as they can making species that actually parent a tiny minority. Especially species like us, where dads are typically involved as well as mums. Another group where most parents...
