“Because No One Would Buy My Photos, Here They Are For Free. Mosul 2017”

As the Battle of Mosul rages on, so does the race between photographers trying to sell snapshots of the conflict to media outlets. Kainoa Little couldn’t find a buyer for his photos, but he decided to share them online anyway – and they tell a harrowing story of struggle and survival. The Shoreline, Washington-based photographer specializes in war zones, and was in Mosul in April 2017 to document Iraqi Federal Police efforts to liberate the city from ISIL militants. Heavy clashes were underway in the Old City, and causing civilians to flee in mass numbers. Little’s photos capture a vivid range of emotions; the anguish of the refugees leaving their homes, the determination of the soldiers protecting them, and the sheer chaos plaguing all of those involved, to name just a ...

New Cancer-Detecting Blood Test Picks Up On Symptoms A Year Early

Uncategorized
A controversial study on cancer risk was published back in March that claimed that two-thirds of all cancers are down to bad luck. It has been greeted with plenty of skepticism by medical professionals, who are concerned with the way the researchers reached this conclusion. Nevertheless, the authors of the study and its detractors agree on one key point: Much more needs to be done to detect cancers earlier in order for treatment to begin sooner rather than later. As it so happens, a new Nature study has outlined how a blood test can detect lung cancer a year earlier than any CT or X-ray scan is currently able to. The team, headed by the Cancer Research UK Lung Cancer Centre of Excellence, the Francis Crick Institute, and University College Londons Canc...

I have posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) from a childhood sexual assault, and I feel the emotional repercussions of it every day. To be honest, I hardly even remember the event itself. Bits and pieces of it, the before and after, the general feeling those I recall viscerally. I've heard that can happen with traumatic events. You block them out to emotionally numb yourself from the pain. It's a coping mechanism. The American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stressstates that PTSD is a normal human reaction to an abnormal situation: Traumatic experiences bring to the fore survival skills which are valuable and useful at the time of the trauma, but which usually become less valuable, less useful and less effective with time. Sometimes survivors become stuck in problem behaviors when their...

9 national parks and monuments Teddy Roosevelt saved from turning into parking lots.

Teddy Roosevelt once said, "It is not what we have that will make us a great nation; it is the way in which we use it." Roosevelt was an avid sportsman, outdoorsman, and hunter. He was an explorer and roughrider. While he really loved shooting things, he also saw the very real potential humans had to exhaust nature's resources. When he became president in 1901, he wanted to use his power to protect the wild places he loved. And oh boy, he did. He quickly established his legacy as one of our nation's great conservationists, and while in office, he used his powers to create or add to six national parks and 18 national monuments. Monuments like the Grand Canyon, which Roosevelt implored people not to mar with development. Before Roosevelt, the Grand Canyon was open territory. It was Roos...

Both he and I datedthese women (who didnt know each other) for nearly three weeks. Wed both been out to dinners, drinks and withfriends with them, and had been texting them on a regular basis. Take the earthworm, which doesnt have the widespread appeal of larger, more charismatic animals such as gorillas, tigers or pandas. Worms are never going to get a strong cute response, and they wont ever be the face of a conservation campaign. But what Darwin rightly recognised is that panda fans avert your eyes worm conservation is much more important once we factor in their provision of what we now call ecosystem services, which are crucial to human surviva...

Researchers Have New Theory Of What Really Wiped Out Tasmanian Tigers From Mainland Australia

Uncategorized
The thylacine, aka the Tasmanian tiger, disappeared mysteriously from mainland Australia thousands of years ago (although a handful of people occasionally claim to still see this striped creature wandering around the outback). The general consensus is that the species was wiped out from the mainland due to the arrival of dingoes or increased human activity around 3,000 years ago. However, new evidence suggests that it was a drought that killed the beast. Scientists from the University of Adelaide extracted ancient DNA from fossilized thylacine bones and museum specimens to find out what drove the mainland individuals into the backlogs of natural history. Their results were recently published in the Journal of Biogeography. “The thy...

Earth’s Sixth Mass Extinction Has Already Begun The “Annihilation” Of Wildlife

Uncategorized
As the Earths sixth mass extinction event gets into full swing, the planets wildlife faces annihilation, according to the latest research. It has been found that the rate of decline currently facing the worlds plants and animals is far worse than we have previously thought, and that the focus on species as a whole may not help us in the long run. The researchers found that around two species of vertebrates go extinct every year, which might not sound that dramatic, but is thought to be 10 to 100 times greater than the natural rate. But they also note how this may be hiding a far more worrying trend in which individual populations are sputtering out of existence as ranges are constricted and divided, which could be equally as damaging. By looking at the...

Resveratrol, a compound produced by a range of plants, has been making headlines over the last year or so, with studies sharply divided on how beneficial said molecule may or may not be to human health. This new technique appears to be so effective that one tomato can be grown to contain enough resveratrol as would be found in 50 bottles of red wine. But is Antifa on the rise, or is it just that we suddenly have a whole new reason to pay attention to it? Well, the answer is a little of both. Antifa is short for anti-fascist, and that's exactly what they are. The loosely-connected collective of leftist activists believes that there are some cases where violence is, in fact, acceptable, even desirable — and fighting Nazis is one of them. The catch, of course? To be fighting Nazis, there need to be Nazis to fight.  That's why Antifa tends to wax and wan...

While many might see bats as pests or vermin, they are often vital for a functioning ecosystem to survive. But a new report published in Science has come concerning news: Nearly half of all flying foxes are close to disappearing forever. The large bats were first identified as at risk over three decades ago when one species, the Guam flying fox, was driven to extinction in the Pacific. It was hoped that this might help push conservation efforts to save those species still surviving. Thirty years later, flying fox populations on islands are still declining because of hunting and habitat loss, and new issues, notably conflict between bats and fruit growers over crops, have arisen, said Tigga Kingston, from Texas Tech University. Just because fraternity brothers engage in some — let’s be real — promiscuous pastimes, that doesn’t say much about them as a whole. Frankly, fraternity brothers aren’t as bad as you may think. Having been in a fraternity myself, I’ve witnessed the marvels accomplished by a house full of loud dudes in their early 20s. See, when you’re in a fraternity, you’re forced to just “get sh*t done.” It’s a wonderful con

We don't often think about it, but we never know what our eyes will be greeted with when we wake up every morning. Sometimes that's a good thing, like finding your kids or pets cuddled up next to you. Other times, it's not so fun, like realizing your dog or cat left you a stinky "present" on the ground near your bed. Or it could get seriously bizarre, like seeing a massive gathering of wild animals right outside your door. Either way, as Forrest Gump would say, "You never know what you're gonna get." That's what these 22 people found out when they woke up to hilarious, strange, and even creepy scenes. 1. "My roommates woke me up at 3:45 a.m. by laughing. Dippy The Dinosaur Replaced By A Magnificent Blue Whale At London’s Natural History Museum

The age of the dinosaurs has come to an end, while the dawn of mammals has just begun. After gracing the grand entrance hall of the Natural History Museum London for almost four decades, the much beloved Dippy the Dinosaur has given way to an equally impressive beast, as Hope the Blue Whale now takes center stage. Positioned as if taking a lunging dive straight through the Hintz Hall, the whale measures an impressive 25.2 meters (83 feet) long, giving visitors a chance to walk underneath the largest animal that has ever lived. The installation of Hope within the entrance hall marks a change of image for the museum, which wants to be seen as a place where cutting-edge science occurs, working to document and save living creatures, and not just a storage ...

When Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans in 2005, people around the country joined forces to help the relief efforts, with the city of Houston taking on a big role. The Texas city, just a few hundred miles down Interstate 10, stepped up and provided support for New Orleans evacuees. Houston's Astrodome was repurposed into a shelter, area school districts adapted to meet new demand, and both local celebrities and everyday citizens donated time, money, and housing for those in need. It was a perfect example of one city coming to another's aid in a challenging time. Hurricane Katrina evacuees set up in Houston's Astrodome stadium in September 2005. There's no denying the fact everyone in the world should probably drop what they're doing and partake in a gigantic group hug right now. I won't get political, but  do we need some global camaraderie. Luckily, I was able to attend an epic event that let me interact with thousands of kind strangers — but we didn't form a group hug. So, you're probably wondering, “What is Dîner En Blanc?” Don't worry, I didn't know what it was before I went either — and there's a r...

Photographer Greta Rybus wanted to see what life north of the north looked like. The Norwegian city of Hammerfest calls itself the northernmost town in the world, but seeded beyond it are a handful of other small communities. One of these is Akkarfjord, on the island of Srya. Its a place few people know about that even other Norwegians rarely visit. All photos by Greta Rybus, used with permission. Only about 80 people live there, their houses huddled around the Akkarfjord harbor. Theres also a local school, post office, and grocery store. Plus a pub, tucked away and only opened on special occasions and birthdays. The harbor is both the towns anchor and its connection to the outside world. Mums And Dads Of Very Preterm Babies More Likely To Be Depressed

The classic image of a newborn baby happily nestled in the proud parents arms is one we are all familiar with. Many of us are lucky enough to have one on the mantelpiece, but some families miss out on taking this photo. Babies who come too early, often weighing under a kilogram, are rushed away from their parents to the neonatal intensive care nursery in a fight for survival. Babies are classified as preterm when they are born prior to 37 weeks' gestation. Within this group, those born prior to 32 weeks are classified as very preterm. In Australia, more than 5,000 babies are born very preterm every year, and it is these babies who are at greatest risk for a wide range of adverse outcomes. A new baby is life-changing for all parents, but for those whose babies are b...

For all of us, the Paris agreement is our lifeline. The Paris agreements key objective is to prevent 2C (3.6F) of warming by 2100. Same-sex sexual behavior (SSB) has been observed in a huge number of animals, ranging from dolphins to lions, although the purpose of this type of conduct has been the source of great confusion for quite some time. After all, on the face of it, homosexual activity should have a negative effect on reproduction and survival rates. Traditionally, scientists have tended to explain this behavior away as perception error, whereby confused animals somehow mistake members of their own sex for potential mates. An...

For the everyday individual, we wouldn’t dream of actually committing any of the heinous crimes we’re so fascinated by, but for some reason we just can’t look away. Criminology professor Scott Bonn suggests that learning about crimes gives us a shot of adrenaline, and allows us to experience fear in a controlled environment. Statins, already used to treat high cholesterol in patients, may also dramatically reduce the risk of death in patientswith breast cancer. A new study, presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology in Chicago this week, has found that the commonly used drug may cut the death rate by up to 38 percent. The work has been carried out by scientists in China, and is a meta-analysis of seven other studies, coming to the conclusion that using lipophilic statins seemed to offer a protection to people suffering from breast cancer. It comes after many other studies have observed this link before, and has prompted fresh calls for clinical trials to investigate whether or not they could be used to improve the rates of breast cancer survival. Alba, the albino orangutan, might just be the only one of her kind in the world. Having rescued her from captivity earlier this year, conservationists now want to create a huge "forest island" reserve for her so that she can live in peace. The Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation hopes to raise $80,000 to get the project up and running. Its plan is to home Alba, whose name means “white” in Latin, and three other orangutans in a huge 5-hectare (12-acre) reserve in central Kalimantan, Borneo, Associated Press reports. It will be surrounded by a moat and monitored to protect her from poachers. Astronomers Find Second-Fastest-Spinning Pulsar Ever Discovered

An international team of researchers has detected an incredible astronomical object: a pulsar that spins over 42,000 times every minute. This is the second-fastest-spinning pulsar ever discovered.   The findings, reported in the Astrophysical Journal Letters, describe PSR J0952–0607, the leftover core of a star that became a supernova. It's a type of neutron star so it has a significant mass, about 1.4 times the mass of the Sun, in a tiny volume. It wouldn’t be much larger than Manhattan. But unlike many neutron stars, PSR J0952–0607 is a pulsar. A beam of radiation is emitted by these objects and as they spin, they appear to pulsate, hence the name. This pulsar rotates 707 times each second. The discovery was possible by co...

At around 1:30 a.m. ET on Friday, July 28, Senator John McCain voted against the GOP's skinny repeal act to partially repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA, aka Obamacare). His vote helped to knock down the repeal act. But his vote against it wouldn't have done anything if it weren't for two women. Republican Senators Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins voted against the skinny repeal, but McCain's been getting all the glory. With the number of Republican senators in office right now, the GOP could only afford to have two Republicans vote against their skinny repeal plan, assuming that all Democrats voted against it. Two Republicans voting against the bill would've left it at 50-50. Vice President Mike Pence was actually there to break that tie. VP Pence just arrived at US Capitol ahead of m...

A Broken Heart May Cause Long-Term Damage To Your Health

A study funded by the British Heart Foundation has found that broken heart syndrome may cause lasting damage to your body. More technically known as Takotsubo syndrome, it refers to how a stressful event like the death of a loved one can cause your heart to perform less effectively and distort in shape. Takotsubo in Japanese means octopus pot, with the syndrome first noted in Japan in 1990. It might sound odd, but the condition is very much real. In this admittedly small study, published in the Journal of the American Society of Echocardiograph, researchers at Aberdeen University examined 52 patients aged between 28 and 87 suffering from the syndrome. Using ultrasound and cardiac MRI scans, they found that it permanently affected how the heart pumps. I...

Thanks to good ol' science and a little help from the folks over at Mind Warehouse, we can now imagine what would happen to Mother Earth if she ever had to go on without us. Within the first few hours of humanity's disappearance, most of the lights on Earth would turn off due to global power plant failure. This Astronomical Watch Shows Our Solar System Orbiting the Sun

Midnight Planétarium is an incredible timepiece that features six bejewelled planets in our solar system accurately rotating around our Sun. The watch was created by Van Cleef & Arpels in partnership with Christiaan van der Klaauw. After three years of work, Midnight Planétarium was unveiled at the annual Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH), held every January in Geneva. The watch contains 396 separate parts and features the six closest planets accurately orbiting the sun. Why were Uranus and Neptune not included? Because you would hardly seem them ever move as Uranus takes over 84 years to make a single rotation of the sun while Neptune takes an astonishing 164 years! As for the planets that are featured, they will make a full rotation on the watch as follows: Mercur

If you were to say that wedding cake is the number one reason to attend a wedding, I would immediately concur. Most couples go all-out with the celebratory confections, but a pastry shop in Australia is now taking it to the next level by bringing in the sweets before the pair even exchanges “I dos.” One awesome bride and her bridesmaids helped usher in the future of wedding ceremonies when they walked down the aisle accessorized with donut bouquets. The contest was put on by Dessert Boxes, an Australian dessert company. Dessert Boxes opened on Feb. 14 of this year because, as they tell Elite Daily, “We launched on Valentine's Day because we wanted to say NO to boring gifts!” Sounds like they couldn't handle even one more heart-shaped box of chocolate...

ShareTweet Ashly Moreau thought she had another month before her unborn son Daxx was making his grand entrance into the world. Ready or not though, Daxx took Ashly and everyone else by surprise when she went into labor on August 11. The 36-year-old had gotten up to go to the bathroom when her water broke more than a month before the baby’s due date of September 20. She couldn’t believe what she saw when she looked down: her baby’s two feet sticking out of her. Daxx was breached, and early, and he was coming. The Louisiana mother’s fiancé, Kelsey Richard, had already left for his job so Ashley had no choice but to call out to her son, Jayden, for help. She told the 10-year-old to run next door and get his grandmother, forgetting that she had recent...

No one wants to imagine what they would do if their child was kidnapped, but it’s an unfortunate reality some parents have to face. It’s only made worse when you figure out just how sick and twisted some of these kidnappers can be – it’s almost impossible not to imagine the worst! So when 57-year-old Gary Simpson signed his 9-year-old niece out of school one day, her family was worried. What’s made the whole situation even more screwed up is what that man was caught purchasing shortly before picking her up: a 12 pack of little girl’s underwear, a child’s bikini along with makeup and other “gifts”. You can see him purchasing camping gear as that poor little girl innocently watches on. This whole situation just makes me sick. Read mor...
Who Is The Current Heir To The Iron Throne?

Who Is The Current Heir To The Iron Throne?

Uncategorized
This fan theory is based onevidence from the Game of Thrones books. If you don’t want to know what could possibly be a spoiler, then look away now. Okay. As things stand in King’s Landing, Tommen is on the Iron Throne. He inherited it from his brother Joffrey, who was poisoned at his wedding, and Joffrey inherited it from his “father” Robert, who was killed after a hunting accident. If Tommen dies, then who takes the Iron Throne next?Well, if he dies without having children (andwhat with his wife Margery locked up, he isn’t really in a good position to procreate) it should goto his sister, Myrcella. Unfortunately, Myrcella was poisoned at the end of season five. So Robert Baratheon is out of children?Yes. Tommen is Robert’s last surviving child, a...

They’ve been known to serve as the faithful aids of witches and demons alike. And don’t get us started on the stereotype that black cats are bad luck. And while none of that is really true, someone on the internet used these stereotypes to their hilarious advantage. Thanks to the Twitter account Black Metal Cats, you can now indulge in these dark stereotypes with badass photos of cats paired with lyrics from metal songs. Here are some of our favorites. It's not news to anyone that cats are strange creatures. The slinky felines have taken over our homes and our Internet memes. They spit up hairballs, poop in boxes, and sleep 16 hours a day. And somehow, these traits make them desirable pets. Their everyday habits are bizarre enough, but there are some lesser known facts aboutcats that are sure to make you go, "Whaaaaa?" and give your kitty some serious side-eye. Ready to be surprised? Snuggle up with your cat and start scrolling. Cats sweat through their paws. via: Shutterstock Cats are, as you know, covered in fur (except for this guy!), so they don’t really have sweat glands. So when cats become overheated or frightened, they sweat through their paws. They can cool themselves off by panting (though that’s usu...

Elephant Poaching Stabilizes, But Number Are Still Declining

Uncategorized
Despite an international trade ban on ivory in 1989, elephants are still being slaughtered in their tens of thousands every year for their tusks. A new report has revealed that the number of elephants being poached seems to have stabilized, however the total number being killed is at levels that remain unacceptably high overall, and still far exceed the numbers that are being born, meaning that the animals are continuing to decline. The report has been released by the Convention on the InternationalTrade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), which compiles the definitive set of numbers on the trends of elephant populations. They have found that the steady increase in African elephants being poached for their ivory, which started in 2006, has finally halted...
