What is your current computer made of? Aluminum? Silicon? Plastic? Perhaps the slime mold Physarum polycephalum? If that last one isn’t true for you now, there’s a chance it will be in the future. Andrew Adamatzky from the University of the West of England and Theresa Schubert of Bauhaus-University Weimar have published a paper in the journal Materials Today which describes how they were able to use the slime mold to create a logical circuit. Previous research has shown that slime molds are actually able to solve mazes, but they might even be more remarkable than that. Last year, Adamatzky and Schubert were able to determine that P. polycephalum demonstrates characteristics of a memristor. A memristor (portmanteau of “memory” and “resistor”) is a theoretical circuit t

He Found A Baby In The Woods In The 50s. 58 Years Later, Sheriff Tells Him THIS

Dave Hickman was only 14 years old when he earned the label of hero. While out hunting with his father in the woods way back in the 50’s he began to hear a strange sound coming from nearby; when he checked he discovered something that would change his life forever. He found a baby girl, soaked to the bone and trapped in the weeds. After helping to nurse her back to health, this little 14-year-old boy held her one last time before she was placed up for adoption. Years went by but the thought of that little girl never left his mind, until he began searching for her in the 70’s. Finally, decades later in 2013, he got the call he had been waiting for years to get – they found her! Her name is now Mary Ellen, and like her rescuer thought of her she had often wondered what be...

Scientists Discover A Species of Desert Plant That Obtains Water From Rock

Uncategorized
Scientists recently discovered that a certain plant, Helianthemum squamatum, is able to extract up to 90% of its fluid requirements from crystallization water trapped in gypsum rock. It is currently the only known plant species able to do this and the finding represents a completely new kind of water source for life. The research was published on August 18 in Nature Communications. The team of researchers, led by plant biologists Dr. Sara Palacio of the Instituto Pirenaico de Ecología in Spain and Dr. Juan Pedro Ferrio of the University of Lleida, exploited the different isotopic compositions of hydrogen and oxygen between gypsum water and free soil water. By examining the isotopic composition of the sap water of H. squamatum, the researchers could then infer what pr

Scientists have long debated the purpose of a zebras stripes, and although there have been several theories put forward, one of the most common is that they are used as some sort of camouflage. This month, a study published in PLOS ONE reveals that these stripes don't actually help to conceal this conspicuous animal from dangerous predators. Zebras have black and white stripes in a predominantly green and sandy-hued landscape. Through human eyes, this color combination seems to make the zebras stand out against their savannah grassland backdrops. However, to several predators, such as the African lion, their own visual systems may mean that this stripe pattern makes zebras harder to spot. 10 Extinct Animals That Science Could Bring Back From The Dead

In early 2000, a tree landed on the last living Pyrenean ibex, turning that proud creature into just one more statistic on an ever-growing list of extinct species. Then, in 2009, a goat gave birth to a cloned Pyrenean ibex in a government-funded miracle that marked the first time any species had been brought back from extinction. Seven minutes later, the baby clone died, and the Pyrenean ibex was granted the further distinction of being the only species that had managed to go extinct twice. But the precedent was set, and now we’re looking at a whole new lineup of animals that just might be heading down the path of the Pyrenean ibex. Meanwhile, 20,000 mothers would avoid dying from breast cancer in the process. Most of the lives that breastfeeding could save are in places where the water supply is unsafe. Since formula needs to be mixed with water, infants' undeveloped immune systems often cannot protect them against the pathogens. The rapid expansion of clean water suppliesover the last twenty years has slashed the number of children exposed to contaminated water, and with it the number of deaths, which once exceeded a million a year. However, this is far from the whole story. "There is a widespread misconception that the benefits of breastfeeding only relate to poor countries. N...

A species of vampire bat that was thought to feed only on birds has developed a taste for human blood, according to a report published recently in the journal Acta Chiropterologica. Working in the southern Peruvian Andes about 4,500 meters above sea level, researchers have uncovered the oldest, extreme altitude human settlements in the Americas. The two hunter-gatherer sites—a base camp and a workshop—are the highest Ice Age human habitats known in the world. The findings, published in Science this week, suggests that humans adapted to high-elevation environments a millennium earlier than we thought.  How humans settled in potentially hazardous areas with low oxygen, high solar radiation, and freezing temperatures is poorly understood. Some say glaciers had to recede to create an opening for humans to migrate through. Others say it took many thousands of years for humans to become genetically capable: high metabolic rates, large lung capacities,

10 Forgotten Battles That Shaped History

History
The Battle of Hastings on October 14, 1066, is widely regarded as a defining moment in English and European history. The victory of William the Conqueror against the Saxon king Harold Godwinsson was a direct result of the latter’s march to defeat the Vikings at Stamford Bridge just weeks prior. It’s worth noting, however, that the largely forgotten Battle of Fulford, which occurred just days before Stamford Bridge, was where it all began. When the Vikings landed on England’s shores, the Earls of Mercia and Northumbria decided to meet them in battle instead of awaiting a siege; the results were catastrophic. The armies of Mercia and Northumbria were almost completely destroyed and King Harold had no choice but to force march his army north, eventually defeating the Viking forces. Still, the

This is a list (which is by no means exhaustive) of 10 amazing big cats. The ten cats were selected because they either have a creative way of hunting, an amazing coat pattern, or are simply awe inspiring. The bobcat is a North American member of the big cat family. As a predator, it inhabits wooded areas, desert edges, semi desert edges, and swampland environments. The bobcat’s diet consists of: rabbits, hares, deer, small rodents, and even insects. Similar to many other big cats, the bobcat is a solitary hunter. Each bobcat will use a single method to mark its territory. Although bobcats are hunted by humans, for both sport and

Dear anti hunting whiners complaining about James Hetfield No one cares. Metallica didn't get cancelled from Glastonbury Happy crywanking.— Markus Von Bastarde (@CountBastardo) June 29, 2014 Last month, Twitchy told you about the halfwits who wanted Metallica frontman James Hetfield murdered for his support of hunting. Hetfield narrates “The Hunt,” the History Channel’s series on Kodiak brown bear hunting. If they couldn’t see him hunted down and shot to death, critics hoped Metallica would at least get yanked from the Glastonbury music festival in England. Others complained that heavy metal doesn’t belong at Glastonbury. But the whiners lost and Metallica couldn’t resist addressing the screechy uproar. “Glastallica” T-shirts pro...

10 Atrocious Genocides In Human History

History
Even the very definition of genocide is contested, but generally speaking, it refers to the intentional destruction of a particular race, ethnicity, religious group, or nationality.  Genocides have occurred (and continue to occur)  in every corner of the globe, in societies ancient and modern, for reasons as diverse as the acquisition of land and resources, to the demented hatred of a single man.  Some scientists have even gone so far as to assert that genocide led to the extinction of Neanderthal man.  Here are ten of the most heinous incidents in human history: The Kurds are an ancient Iranian ethnicity spread out across several nations in the Middle East.  It is estimated that just under twenty percent of Iraq’s population is Kurdish, with most set...
Top 10 Evil Children

Top 10 Evil Children

Crime
From time to time the unthinkable happens: children kill. Some decide to murder members of their own family in spite of their seemingly normal upbringing. Others do so because their upbringing was far from normal – often including beatings and abuse. Then there are misguided children who, from the sheer desire to kill, go on murder sprees ending the lives of purely innocent victims. Children are supposed to be innocent and pure; without malice, contempt, sinister anger, or desires to kill, yet every year many commit horrific crimes. Here are Ten of the Most Evil Children in History, with number One exclusively dedicated to one foul group. The age limit for this list is 17 years. 10. Octomom Brooded Her Eggs for Record-Breaking Four-and-a-Half Years

Uncategorized
This amazing pale purple Octomom off the coast of California brooded her clutch of eggs for four and half a years. That’s the longest known brooding period of any animal on the planet. Female octopuses typically have a single reproductive period, and then they die. For shallow-water species, parental care lasts up to three months. The previous record holder for longest octopus brooding was the deep-living Bathypolypus arcticus: 14 months in the lab. But we know very little about deep-sea species in their natural habitat.  A trio of researchers led by Bruce Robison from Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) first met this deep-sea Graneledone boreopacifica mom in April 2007. They were surveying an isolated rocky outcrop about 1,397 meters (4,583 feet) deep

How To Find Micrometeorites In Your Home

Uncategorized
It is estimated that anywhere from 37,000 to 78,000 tons of meteorites hit Earth’s surface each year. That might seem a bit high, but the vast majority of this figure is made up of micrometeorites, which are dust-sized specks about 50 µm to 2 mm in diameter. It is estimated that about one micrometeorite lands every square meter per year. This means that there are probably loads of micrometeorites right outside your door! Jon Larsen of Project Stardust is an advocate for all citizens going out and finding micrometeorites.  The hunt for micrometeorites begins with using a good magnet. Don’t just grab something off of your refrigerator, purchase a magnet that is extremely strong—like the neodym magnet pictured—that has a hook to be used as a handle. The stronger the m

Archer Fish Create Deadly Water Guns To Catch Prey

Uncategorized
With roughly 28,000 species of fish in the world, there are many different hunting strategies. One of the most unique might be Toxotes, a genus better known as archer fish. These fish eat terrestrial insects, which might seem problematic. However, the fish are able to turn their mouths into souped-up squirt guns and blast their prey from several meters away. Peggy Gerullis and Stefan Schuster of University of Bayreuth performed a study to find out how these fish can be such accurate hunters by regulating the jets of water. The paper was published in the journal Current Biology. These fish haven’t evolved a specialized organ used for shooting water; they’ve learned to work with what they have. Previous research found that by positioning the tongue along the roof of th

Paleontologists have returned from the Antarctic Peninsula with a scientific treasure trove. It will take years to reveal all the finds, including whether any new dinosaur species are included. However, after two journeys frustrated by bad weather, paleontologists are excited by what they call really great fossils. Prior to this year's expedition, most of what has been found in Antarctica has been invertebrates, bivalves and such like, Dr. Steve Salisburyof the University of Queensland told IFLScience. There were several dinosaur fossils found in the mid-'80s, but not much else. Consequently, there has been ample enthusiasm for more, but the hostile climate has proven a challenge. Thick ice makes most of Antarctica off-limits to fossil hunters, but large parts of the Antarc...

Cancer is a class of diseases in which a group of cells display uncontrolled growth (division beyond the normal limits), invasion (intrusion on and destruction of adjacent tissues), and sometimes metastasis (spread to other locations in the body via lymph or blood). California has experienced, over the past few years, its most severe drought on record. Vertebrate Wildlife Species Have Declined By Half Over Last 40 Years

The 2014 Living Planet Report from the World Wildlife Fund has described the loss of wildlife as much worse than predicted two years ago. In 2012, they predicted that wildlife had declined by about 30 percent between 1970 and 2010, though new numbers suggest that wildlife populations have actually been cut by about 52 percent. The difference in reported loss is due to a new method for collecting the numbers.   The recent report analyzed 10,000 representative populations of fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals, discovering how they've been faring over the last 40 years. Sadly, they do not appear to be doing very well. The report attributes human activity, including poaching, over-hunting, and habitat destruction as the largest burden upon wildlife.   Huma

Born with a congenital heart defect, Oscar underwent open-heart surgery when he was just six days old. He was born with the condition transposition of the great arteries.
