10 Animal Adaptations To Hostile Environments

10 Animal Adaptations To Hostile Environments

Animals
Mother Nature is a very stubborn character. She always tries to conquer whatever harsh environment the relentless forces of our planet have managed to create, and it is in such extreme conditions where the ingenuity of the natural world can be admired most. More than often, Nature seems more intelligent than any scientist, inventing means of survival that act as an inspiration for man’s desire to conquer harsh environments. Here are ten outstanding adaptations of animals to extreme temperatures and other hostile conditions: Fish are poikilothermic organisms, or in simpler terms, cold-blooded animals, which means that the lower the temperature of their surroundings is, the harder it is for them to maintain their metabolic functions. Furthermore, as temperatures go lower, ice crystals can

Mexican free-tail bats flying at night in Texas. Image: USFWS/Ann FroschauerIn the small village of Meliandou, in Guinea, stood a tall, hollowed-out tree where children loved to play. But thousands of bats lived in the tree, and one toddler — a 2-year-old named Emile Ouamouno — may have contracted Ebola from playing there. Emile, who died in December 2013, was "patient zero," or the first person known to have contracted Ebola in the current outbreak that has now claimed at least 7,600 lives in the region. In a new study, researchers looking for the source of the outbreak found that free-tailed bats (Mops condylurus) lived in the tree. These bats are likely a reservoir of the disease, the researchers concluded. The tree was about 165 feet away from Emile's house, in the village of 31 house

Charlie Sheens recent announcement that he has HIV has raised concerns about whether he may have transmitted the infection to other people. While we obviously dont know his specific medical details (and really, its none of our business), HIV treatment is effective at reducing transmission. This is known as the treatment as prevention strategy. There have been many advances in HIV care since Rock Hudson was diagnosed in the 1980s. At this time, the prognosis of AIDS was similar to patients with advanced cancer. Since the mid-1990s, combinations of antivirals have markedly improved the survival of people living with HIV. Modern combinations are simple to take (as few as one tablet, once a day) and associated with much fewer side effects than older drugs. The life expectancies of people livi...

One year ago, Kali Hardig went swimming at an Arkansas water park and the next day was rushed to the hospital where doctors diagnosed her with a rare, 99% fatal condition: a brain-eating amoeba. This is the miraculous story of how she lived. July 19, 2013 The hazy glare of another hot morning shone through the blinds when Kali Hardig plopped onto a gray, floral-patterned couch and waited for the throbbing in her head to subside. It hurt really bad. Almost as if her long, sun-drenched hair were on fire. Kali, who was then 12 years old, didn’t even want to get out of bed. “Mama,” she said, “just let me sleep.” Traci, her mother, said she didn’t want Kloee, her bouncy little Yorkie, up on the couch. Deer were introduced into Australia in the 19th century for hunting. There are now six species roaming wild, and their numbers are increasing dramatically as their population expands and through human action. As they spread, they raise uncomfortable issues for conservation. Fallow deer (Dama dama) were introduced to Tasmania for hunting by the newly arrived colonists in the 1830s. Now after 180 years, there is growing concern amongst land holders and conservationists that this species is on the move. From a current population estimated at 25,000, modelling suggests deer could increase by 40% in the next decade. That would mean up to a million animals by mid century without additional management. This has all the elements of a wicked problem, a stand-off with no right answer...

Perfectly formed, sharing the same yolk sac, the slightly larger of the two was the one trying to break out. Leone talks about how important it is not to intervene during this process, but why there are always exceptions: Its always best not to interfere with these animals but sometimes its needed. In this case, our help was needed for their survival. Next came the part of actually separating the twin tortoises, because they were stuck together. A piece o...

It may be small enough to sit in the palm of your hand, but even now nearly 800 years after it was lost to sight in what is now South Africa the Golden Rhinoceros of Mapungubwe has powerful symbolism. 30 Very Real Struggles Girls With Curly Hair Go Through In Life

Tumblr Having curly hair is truly a gift… according to the people who don’t actually have it. Dealing with curls is no easy task, and one most of us have to battle with on a constant basis. The amount we must spend on products is enough to drive us to the streets, the time we spend managing our frizz is enough to drive any person insane and the anxiety we feel at hair appointments is enough to cause anyone to hit up a shrink. The struggle is real, and today I am going to break it down for you: 1. The biggest lie you have ever heard is “I’m sure it looks great curly.” How would you even know? You’ve never even seen it. Jerk. 2. No one (not even you sometimes) can wrap their heads around how much you spend on hair products Maybe that&

Five minutes long?” Yes, at four minutes and fifty-one seconds, the video is more than twice as long as the average theatrical movie trailer. And given what we know both about Rockstar’s meticulous planning and media savvy, and about attention spans for internet video, it’s worth asking: why? This was certainly a deliberate move—but for what reason? One place to start thinking about this is a

Neanderthal Diets Changed With Climate. Ours Didnt

Uncategorized
Researchers studying tooth wear patterns in ancient Homo reveal that as climate began to fluctuate severely in the Ice Age Neanderthals adapted their diets in a different way than our own species. The findings, published in PLOS One this week, suggest that human dietary strategies gave our species an edge over Neanderthals. The Neanderthal lineage survived for hundreds of thousands of years throughout western Eurasia, successfully dealing with both harsh and changing environments. Why they went extinct some 40,000 years ago is still a mystery. Some researchers would expect Neanderthals to be better adapted than Homo sapiens a species that evolved in Africa to live in Europe during extreme climate instability. But, modern humans replaced Neanderthals, suggesting that our...

Unfortunately for her, she got stuck. Neighbors heard the woman’s screams for help at around 5:45 am on Sunday and called the police. 10 Notorious Cases of the Bystander Effect

The bystander effect is the somewhat controversial name given to a social psychological phenomenon in cases where individuals do not offer help in an emergency situation when other people are present. The probability of help has in the past been thought to be inversely proportional to the number of bystanders. In other words, the greater the number of bystanders, the less likely it is that any one of them will help. This list describes the prototype of the effect and cites nine particularly heinous examples. First, the prototype of the bystander effect. Since it was first discovered in 1976, strains of the Ebola virus have wreaked havoc throughout central Africa, particularly in the Congo area. Perhaps the most frightening thing about Ebola, other than its staggering mortality rate, is how very little we know about it. 102014 Outbreak As of August 6, 2014, the World Health Organization claimed that 932 people had died of Ebola so far in the summer of 2014. Immunotherapy is a relatively nascent weapon in the fight against cancer. Instead of relying on more conventional chemotherapy treatments, this technique encourages the body to use its own immune system to destroy cancerous tissue. Its been seeing some success recently, and a new drug, IMM-101, has been shown to extend the lives of people with severe pancreatic cancer. Although this is clearly wonderful, there are two aspects of this trial that stand out as truly remarkable. Firstly, the drug which is made from heat-treated bacteria produces no side-effects in patients whatsoever. Secondly, it can successfully treat metastatic cancer, the type wherein tumors have spread all throughout the body and where untreated survival rates are incredibly low. Other reasons are personal memories. I grew up in Westchester County, in a suburban town just outside New York, so the city was ingrained in me from a young age. Soldiers are also trained to kill enemies quickly and (well, almost) painlessly, with bladed side-arms. However, in times gone by, humane weapons were the last thing warriors were looking to wield. Pain and maximum suffering were the order of the day, and the popularity of a weapon could be measured by its brutality. For good reason, too! A weapon that scared the crap out of your enemy was a useful tool, as well as an empowering asset. Let’s take a look at some of the more fearsome, and downright nasty, weapons employed by warriors of times gone by. In my 27 years of existence, I’ve traveled to two continents, 11 countries and over 20 cities. I would rather spend the contents of my bank accounton plane tickets than designer handbags. When showing the house, the broker, named Verder met Wonen, ushers prospective buyers onto the wooden ride, which carries the interested parties into the basement, up a flight of stairs into the main floor of the home and finally, out through the garden. As part of an advertising campaign, met Wonen developed a promotional video featuring the roller coaster tours.
