Oldest Evidence Of Parental Care Discovered

The oldest evidence of parental care has been found in Ordovician mudstone in New York State. The species uncovered is new to science and has been named Luprisca incuba after the Roman goddess of childbirth. It is also the oldest evidence of ostracods, a type of crustacean, yet found.   Although 13,000 living species of ostcracod are known, along with more than 50,000 extinct versions, they keep a pretty low profile. After all, when a 3cm version gets named Gigantocypris you're a little easy to miss. Most live either as plankton on the open oceans or in the upper layer of the sea floor, while a few occupy forest soils in the remnants of Gondwanaland. They fossilize well however, and form the most common arthropod in the fossil record, so the discovery of 450 mil

A letter from Charles Bukowski giving conditions for doing a poetry reading

Here is a 1971 response from Charles Bukowski to a request he received to do a reading. It is winsome, mildly crass, and equal parts dismissive, disarming, and self-deprecating…I am available for a poetry reading but don’t know if you have the stakes. It would take round-trip air… plus $200… Auden gets 2,000 a reading, Ginsberg 1,000, so you see I’m cheap. A real whore…I quit my job at age 50, I’m 51 now and have been more or less on the literary hustle. That’s why I talk money like a pool sharp. It’s all survival; Forgive me.(via Boing Boing)Read more: http://twentytwowords.com/a-letter-from-charles-bukowski-giving-conditions-for-doing-a-poetry-reading/

A double meaning presented at the outset sets the stage nicely for Jiang Wen’s period-piece war of wills, where everyone has hidden intentions and dual identities. The meat of the film is the battle for the small hamlet of

Last December, a truck containing lethal radioactive cobalt-60 was stolen outside Mexico City, briefly causing an international panic. Then, almost immediately, the story quietly disappeared — but the questions surrounding it didn’t. On the morning of Dec. 3, 2013, Francisco Sanchez, a farmer on his way to work in Hueypoxtla, a rural town near Mexico City, found a pile of old machine parts strewn in the field behind his house. One piece, which resembled a water pump or a large diving bell, was so big and heavy he couldn’t move it. There was also a metal box with a scratched-away label that he couldn’t read, and a cylinder about 3 feet long, which Sanchez thought he could use to split firewood. The other farmers hadn&rsq...

While many still tough it out in tents to fully experience nature, even more outdoor enthusiasts establish their base camps with electricity, plumbing and even television or the Internet, just in case the great outdoors isn’t great enough. We’re pretty sure that the Palazzo RV featured in this video is meant more for touring musicians and maybe even a king or two, as opposed to camping. At $3 million apiece, anyone rolling down the highway in one of these babies can probably park it wherever they want, not just on a concrete slab in a designated campground. Kitten therapy, however, is the answer to virtually all of life’s problems. Imagined by Soul Pancake and Purina, the idea is simple: Stressed participants can enter Purina’s outdoor “relaxation room,” where they are surprised with tiny little kitten friends. “Patients” can stay and play with the cats until their stress has melted away, and a trainer watches from nearby to ensure the kittens’ safety. Pregnancy sounds like the ultimate form of animal cooperation mothers share their own bodies to grow and support their childrens prenatal development. But in reality, embryos use every trick in the book to take more than their fair share. Mothers, in turn, marshal their best defensive tactics. Ultimately, its an evolutionary arms race. Offspring continually evolve strategies to steal resources, while mothers evolve strategies to defend their resources. Natural selection will favor embryos that are able to steal resources, but this will impose costs on the mother. My colleagues and I are interested in how the mechanisms of this battle could have evolved. And while these changes in our physical design have admittedly pushed us to the top of the food chain, they aren’t without their drawbacks. Unfortunately, in our journey to the top, we’ve developed aches, pains, and diseases that are new to the primate lineage. 10 Back Pain There is perhaps no malady collectively griped about more than back trouble. We have upper back pain and lower back pain and hordes of chiropractors promising to realign our vertebrae. So, what gives? Are our spine problems all due to spending too much time hunched over com...

Then get in touch with Muncie Animal Shelter because they want you to take their dogs for a walk while you’re out capturing Meowths and Rattatas. “Trying to hatch an egg or catch rare Pokemon?” says the ad on the shelter’s Facebook page. “Come on down to the Muncie Animal Shelter to walk one of our dogs while you get your steps in! Just come to the front desk and say you are here for the Pokemon dogs!” Phil Peckinpaugh, director of the shelter, said he got the idea after noticing people hunting Pokémon all over the city, so he joined forces with Sam Wiser, an intern at the mayor’s office, and together they came up with the ad that’s since been shared almost 25k times. Gritty. Bold. Brash. Yeah, that’s a man. Vulnerable, emotional, transparent? You won’t find those words in male vocabularies. They’re kryptonite and go against our male ideals. But male ideals are often unhealthy stereotypes, falling far from reality and creating crippling insecurities. No doubt women struggle with insecurities, with airbrushed images of beauty magazines everywhere you look, but that’s not an admission acceptable for the alpha male culture. Sweeping things under the covers only allows what’s toxic to grow. Insecurities, like monsters under the bed, weaken and disappear when confronted. Here are five ignored insecurities that cripple men: 1. The Boogie Nights Performance The mega doses of Viagra and selective editing of adult films creates a complex when

Bacterial Communication Signals Altered To Battle Pancreatic Cancer

Uncategorized
The key to successful cancer treatment involves identifying the disease early, before it has a chance to metastasize and spread around the body. However, some cancers—due to the tissue type or at which stage it was diagnosed—don’t respond well to traditional treatments. As a way of combating these tricky diseases, a group of researchers have reprogrammed the chemical signals used by bacteria for communication, telling the cancer cells to kill themselves. The research was led by Senthil Kumar of the University of Missouri and the paper was published in PLOS ONE. Cell-to-cell communication in bacterial colonies occurs through a process called quorum sensing, where the individual cells generate chemical signals that are picked up by others. This can cause certain genes

A group of physicists recently built the smallest engine ever created from just a single atom. Like any other engine it converts heat energy into movement but it does so on a smaller scale than seen before. The atom is trapped in a cone of electromagnetic energy and lasers are used to heat it up and cool it down, which causes the atom to move back and forth in the cone like an engine piston. The scientists from the University of Mainz in Germany who are behind the invention dont have a particular use in mind for the engine. But its a good illustration of how we are increasingly able to replicate the everyday machines we rely on at a tiny scale. This is opening the way for some exciting possibilities in the future, particularly in the use of nanorobots in medicine, that cou...

The Australian prime ministers award for science has been awarded to University of Sydney biologist Rick Shine, who has been helping to protect the countrys wildlife from poisonous cane toads using sausages containing small, non-lethal amounts of meat from the deadly amphibians. Cane toads, which are native to Central and South America, were introduced to Australia in 1935 in an attempt to control populations of cane beetles in Queenslands sugar plantations. Unfortunately, the experiment backfired spectacularly, as the toads reproduced at a rate of knots, spreading across much of the country. Many predatory reptiles and mammals have since died as a result of eating these toads, which now pose a considerable threat to the survival of several native species. The tide turned off the coast of British Columbia and a pod of orcas who were likely seal hunting, lost one of their own as it became stranded, ending up on rocks. Whale watchers caught wind as to what had happened and thankfully came to the rescue. You can hear the poor guy practically crying for help. The crew acted fast as they knew they had to. Wet blankets and sea water to keep the whale cool was used and the video really is incredible as to what they did next to help this animal in distress. Stunning Open Concept Loft with Exposed Brick

Stunning Open Concept Loft with Exposed Brick

Uncategorized
Photograph by Teed Haze Located in San Francisco’s South Beach neighbourhood, this gorgeous open-concept ‘hard’ loft has soaring ceilings and an amazing wall of exposed brick. At 2,200 sq. ft., the space is unique as it’s a fully designated live/work space so you could either live here or have a pretty sweet office space. Listed by Teed Haze at a cool $1,550,000 USD, this 2 bedroom (or office) place also features a spacious outdoor patio. My only concern would be noise/privacy, as it does not seem like the bedrooms/offices/bathrooms are enclosed. Some might deem that the nature of ‘open-concept’ though… The building itself was built in 1916 for use as a warehouse and printing shop (thus the term ‘hard’ loft since the building had an ...

How friendship is more important then ever before View this image › At a classic summer Brooklyn party I don’t know about you, but I am deeply, truly and madly in love with my best friends. This may sound as though I am just stating the obvious truth for everyone, but I am starting to believe that the way my friends and I feel about each other, may not be the same as for most people. I have met many people that don’t actually have a sizable group of friends that they adore, love, know everything about and spend almost all of their free time with. In fact, some of them don’t even have one friend that they can spend every evening, chatting, laughing, and adoring. Their “best friends” seem more like distant acquaintances when compared again...

EDUARDO MUNOZ / Reuters A longtime New York occupier blames the movement’s inability to hold on to top anarchist talent for its slow fizzling out over the last few months in an article on his website today. Chris Longenecker, an anarchist and member of Occupy Wall Street’s Direct Action working group, argues that Occupy failed as a radical anarchist movement because the best people left or were forced out. While Occupy tends to operate on core ana

Narwhals’ Tusks Act As Sensors

Narwhals are a mighty impressive animal to look at - that incredible tusk could certainly do more than just poke your eye out. But what is its purpose? Researchers have long pondered this, with numerous ideas surfacing. It has been proposed to act as a swimming rudder, thermal regulator, a tool for breaking ice, a weapon, a breathing organ, and a hunting tool, amongst other things. That's quite an impressive list. But in a study published in the journal Anatomical Record, scientists have discovered that it actually provides a sensory function. Narwhals, or narwhales, are toothed-whales in the same family as the beluga whale. They can be recognized by their characteristic long helical tusk, which is actually an elongated tooth. They are found in very cold locations; pr...

1. The Klipspringer could probably jump over your house. Have a silver dollar nearby? Hold it in your hand. Now picture a 40-pound, 3-foot-tall deer balanced delicately on it. Congratulations, you've caught a klipspringer! A klipspringer jumping about 20% as high as it could if it really wanted to. Native to sub-Saharan Africa, the klipspringer is a tiny ungulate with a big vertical jump. Its little legs tipped by tiny round hooves each the size of a dime are incredibly strong and can propel the klipspringer up to 50 feet in the air. It's the highest jumper relative to body size in the animal kingdom. Another fun fact? Thanks to the succulent plants they eat, klipspringers never need to drink water. 2. Every Single Polar Bear Population In The Arctic Faces Unprecedented Habitat Loss

Uncategorized
Polar bears are one of the most prominent symbols of man-made climate change, and its not difficult to see why. Little garners more empathy than the sight of an animal watching on helplessly as its home literally disintegrates into the sea. Plenty of studies have detailed just how quickly their icy habitats are disappearing, and a new paper in the journal Cryosphere sadly reveals just how desperate their plight is. There are 19 separate polar bear populations that live throughout the Arctic, and it just so happens that every single one of them is experiencing increasingly early ice loss. A team from the University of Washington (UW) scoured through 35 years of satellite data, which recorded the daily sea ice concentrations. Polar bears use sea ice in both summer and winter for hunting the...
