Why Some Geckos Don’t Stick

Uncategorized
Thanks to millions of microscopic hair-like structures called setae, geckos have the amazing ability to cling tenaciously to smooth surfaces like windows or ceilings. The adhesion is so strong—even in death—that people have been trying to mimic it for the last several decades. So why did some geckos give up their sticky feet over evolutionary time? Because it’s expensive, according to a study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences last month.  Evolution can remove previously acquired morphological adaptations in order to help confer survival advantages for a species. Geckos are a diverse group of lizards that have spread throughout a variety of microhabitats, and how complex their innovative sticky feet are can vary wildly. This complex adaptati

Neanderthals May Not Have Been as Inferior as Suggested

Uncategorized
When Neanderthals went extinct about 40,000 years ago, Homo sapiens became the last remaining human species on Earth. The story frequently goes that they were inferior in a variety of ways to anatomically modern humans and just couldn’t compete. A new study turns this notion on its head and highlights a series of ways that Neanderthals were actually superior. The analysis was conducted by Paola Villa of the University of Colorado Museum and Wil Roebroeks of Leiden University. The results were published in PLOS ONE. "The evidence for cognitive inferiority is simply not there," Villa said in a press release. "What we are saying is that the conventional view of Neanderthals is not true." Their analysis looked at the top hypotheses for why our species beat out Neanderthal

If Humans Suddenly Disappeared, This Is What Would Happen To Earth…It’s Not Pretty

The end of the world is a scary concept, right? We tend to equate the possibility of the end of the human race with the end of the world in general, but the truth is that when humanity dies out, Earth will keep on chugging along without us. It's fun (and kind of freaky) to imagine what would happen to the planet if humans suddenly disappeared. Thanks to good ol' science and a little help from the folks over at Mind Warehouse, we can now imagine what would happen to Mother Earth if she ever had to go on without us. Within the first few hours of humanity's disappearance, most of the lights on Earth would turn off due to global power plant failure. Hydroelectric power, however, would still run without the help of humans. ...

Summer always feels longer than it actually is, so before you know it you'll be packing up and moving back to school. You know you'll be back home soon, but it's hard not to dwell on what other sort of adventures you could've fit into your schedule this summer, especially a few fun vacations with your girlfriends, trips to the beach, BBQs, and days spent doing nothing (or everything!) with the people you love most. Time is ticking away until you head back to college, but that doesn't mean you can't make the most of your time with your friends. Especially if you all head back to different schools in the fall, the last few weeks of summer are of utmost importance. You could spend more time doing what you always do in your hometown, but taking an end-of-summer vacaywith your friends would be...

An international team of astronomers has discovered the smallest star yet, which is just slightly larger than Saturn and about 8 percent the mass of the Sun. As reported in Astronomy & Astrophysics, the object is touching the limit on how small a star canbe. Scientists discovered that figure is about 70 times the mass of Jupiter less than that, it's a failed star, more than that, it becomes a star and EBLM J0555-57Ab is about 85 times the gas giant. Midnight Planétarium is an incredible timepiece that features six bejewelled planets in our solar system accurately rotating around our Sun. The watch was created by Van Cleef & Arpels in partnership with Christiaan van der Klaauw. After three years of work, Midnight Planétarium was unveiled at the annual Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH), held every January in Geneva. The watch contains 396 separate parts and features the six closest planets accurately orbiting the sun. Why were Uranus and Neptune not included? Because you would hardly seem them ever move as Uranus takes over 84 years to make a single rotation of the sun while Neptune takes an astonishing 164 years! If you were to say that wedding cake is the number one reason to attend a wedding, I would immediately concur. Most couples go all-out with the celebratory confections, but a pastry shop in Australia is now taking it to the next level by bringing in the sweets before the pair even exchanges “I dos.” One awesome bride and her bridesmaids helped usher in the future of wedding ceremonies when they walked down the aisle accessorized with donut bouquets. The contest was put on by Dessert Boxes, an Australian dessert company. Dessert Boxes opened on Feb. 14 of this year because, as they tell Elite Daily, “We launched on Valentine's Day because we wanted to say NO to boring gifts!” Sounds like they couldn't handle even one more heart-shaped box of chocolate...

ShareTweet Ashly Moreau thought she had another month before her unborn son Daxx was making his grand entrance into the world. Ready or not though, Daxx took Ashly and everyone else by surprise when she went into labor on August 11. The 36-year-old had gotten up to go to the bathroom when her water broke more than a month before the baby’s due date of September 20. She couldn’t believe what she saw when she looked down: her baby’s two feet sticking out of her. Daxx was breached, and early, and he was coming. The Louisiana mother’s fiancé, Kelsey Richard, had already left for his job so Ashley had no choice but to call out to her son, Jayden, for help. She told the 10-year-old to run next door and get his grandmother, forgetting that she had recent...

No one wants to imagine what they would do if their child was kidnapped, but it’s an unfortunate reality some parents have to face. It’s only made worse when you figure out just how sick and twisted some of these kidnappers can be – it’s almost impossible not to imagine the worst! So when 57-year-old Gary Simpson signed his 9-year-old niece out of school one day, her family was worried. What’s made the whole situation even more screwed up is what that man was caught purchasing shortly before picking her up: a 12 pack of little girl’s underwear, a child’s bikini along with makeup and other “gifts”. You can see him purchasing camping gear as that poor little girl innocently watches on. This whole situation just makes me sick. Read mor...

This fan theory is based onevidence from the Game of Thrones books. If you don’t want to know what could possibly be a spoiler, then look away now. Okay. As things stand in King’s Landing, Tommen is on the Iron Throne. He inherited it from his brother Joffrey, who was poisoned at his wedding, and Joffrey inherited it from his “father” Robert, who was killed after a hunting accident. If Tommen dies, then who takes the Iron Throne next?Well, if he dies without having children (andwhat with his wife Margery locked up, he isn’t really in a good position to procreate) it should goto his sister, Myrcella. Unfortunately, Myrcella was poisoned at the end of season five. So Robert Baratheon is out of children?Yes. Tommen is Robert’s last surviving child, a...

Sadly, Molly is just another casualty, as she now joins several other original historical characters: Felicity passed away in 2011, Kirsten in 2010, and Samantha in 2009. The world is cruel. (Addy, introduced in 1993, is still with us…but, really, for how much longer? I can’t take it.) Unsurprisingly, dolls from the original collection as well as their accessories
Dog Catches Fish From Lake

Dog Catches Fish From Lake

There’s a reason dogs have been so close to humans for thousands of years. They are great hunters, and together, people and dogs are an powerful force in the wild.  This dog isn’t necessarily a hunting dog, just the family pet. But instinct is difficult to suppress, and she caught a fish on her first try when she was out by the lake with her people friends.  She obediently dropped the fist instead of enjoying the meal, only for her human friend to accidently knock it back into the water. Breakthrough Listen, an international collaborative project to look for signals from extraterrestrial civilizations, has employed its high-precision instruments to look at a one-of-a-kind astronomical event, the fast radio burst (FRB) 121102. FRBs are brief and extremely energetic pulses of radio waves whose mysterious origin has puzzled scientists for the last two years. FRB 121102 is even more special, as it’s the only one that repeats itself. This characteristic has allowed for detailed studies of the source, with Breakthrough Listen detecting 15 high-frequency pulses during just two 30-minute scans of that patch of the sky. This suggests that it’s in a more active state. “Bursts from this source have never been seen...

Photographer Captures “Tuskers” Hunting Mammoth Remains In Siberia

Uncategorized
A photographer has taken a trip into the Russian wilderness to searchfor the remains of mammoths with rather startlingphotographic results. Amos Chapple documented his trip last year on his website, where he headedinto the heart of Siberia with a group of local hunters known as tuskers to track down some of these ancient beasts. Mammothsare thought to have thrived in Siberia until about 12,000 years ago, when a warming climate killed them off. But many remnants of the creatures remain and some people will pay a high price for them. The practice is controversial. The tuskers use damaging methods to find hidden bones, firing jets of water into cliffs at high pressure. This sends a slurry of water and earth into nearby rivers, causing rising silt levels...

Fall is a season for cuffing now, which is one of our last remaining animalistic urges to survive by staying warm. It is a time for infinity scarves, for sweatpants, for pumpkin spice lattes, orange colored everything, and Halloween-themed tube socks. But it used to be much more than all that. There's a lot to be said about the spiritual meaning behind the the fall equinox. In fact, fall being marked by the autumn equinox was known as the holiday of Mabon in the Pagan calendar. It marked a spiritual celebration to honor of the change of seasons, which used to pose a massive challenge to our survival as humans. Today though, th...

I was lucky enough to have one year of high school with my older sister before she went off to college. She was a cool senior when I was a totally lost freshman. Sure, she didn't always want to associate with her nerdy little sis, but when we did hang out it was special and I'm eternally grateful to have had my BFF there. If you are close enough in age to your sister that you were able to go to high school together, you know that time in your life was important. Even if looking back on it now you may think, What was I even doing? And what was up with that hair choice? You had your sister there when you made these bad choices, and she helped you throu...

They've also recorded baleen whale sounds in the North Atlantic missing the "overtone" portion of the call. Again, scientists are dumbfounded. New Research published in Science Reports, however, suggests that the whales are choosing to do this – and that human activity is probably to blame. Before now, it was believed a whale's call is generated by a resonating sound in the chambers of the animal's upper respiratory system. If this was the case,&...

Many hunters in Greece consider their hunting dogs to be more like tools of their trade and not living, breathing creatures. Unfortunately, this often results in their abuse and neglect. One night, animal rescuer Valia Orfanidou received a call about an abandoned dog in the mountains. She drove through the dark forest to find him, and made a sad discovery when she finally did. Tied to a tree and left to starve was a nine-year-old hunting dog with a minor limp. Orfanidou freed the abandoned animal and guided him back to her car, hoping to give him a second chance at life. The 39-year-old lawyer drove from his middle-class Cairo neighborhood of Dokki this week to visit his family in upper Egypt and voted in the referendum on the new constitution there. A brave mongoose decides take on its aggressors in a video posted by Barcroft TV. The battle of the carnivores wasn't exactly even, with a two kilogram mongoose putting up a fight against four 100 kilogram lions.  The incident took place in Masaai Mara National Park, Kenya, when photographer Jerome Guillaumot stumbled across four lions and one feisty mongoose. While the fight for survival was filmed in 2011, the video was only recently released. Mongooses are small mammals that live in burrows and feed on animals such as rodents, birds, reptiles, insects and worms. Some species also eat fruit, nuts and seeds. The most famous example of the audacity of mongooses is when they attack venomous cobras, but filming a mongoose fight a lion is exceptionally rare.

How REI Is Redefining The Meaning Of Black Friday For The Better

We spend our Thanksgiving Day with family and friends. We count our blessings and give thanks, rejoicing in the beautiful life we have been graced with. Then, Black Friday happens. We wake up at the crack of dawn and wait in a three-hour-long, drive-thru line at Starbucks to get caffeinated so we can withstand the mayhem at our favorite shopping destinations. This is all just to get $100 off that high-definition TV weve had our eyes on. We stand on our feet for hours and we duke it out in the aisles. Arguments ensue and stress is inevitable. Ive never been a fan of Black Friday, but I know many a shopper who lives for the glorious day. Ive personally always found the whole idea of it to be quite fascinating. It’s fascinating that we can switch gears so quickly after spending an enti...

From rainbow-colored beer to “Viagra” made from frogs, there’s an unusual beverage to delight—or disgust—just about every taste. 10 Deer Penis Wine Chinese athletes have long used animal parts to improve their performance. In the 1990s, Chinese track coach Ma Junren credited a series of world records by unknown runners in part to a cocktail of turtle blood and caterpillar fungus (though to be fair, illicit testosterone use was suspected). But for the ultimate in sports medicine, some folks swear by deer penis wine, which despite—or, perhaps, because of—its alleged powers of healing, was banned from the 2008 Beijing Olympic games. Many traditional Chinese remedies, including those made with animal penises, contain herbal ephedrine, considered by numerous sports

The Big Picture Of The Universe Reveals The Family Tree Of Galaxies

A new photo album made from hundreds of images of more than 70,000 galaxies represents one of the most detailed galaxy studies ever compiled, spanning a period of 12 billion years. The album, which my colleagues and I compiled, allows us to track the family tree of galaxies over more than 90% of the age of the universe. We used the 6.5-metre Magellan Baade Telescope and FourStar infrared camera to snap these images over 45 nights. Taking inspiration from the camera, we named the study the FourStar Galaxy Evolution Survey, or ZFOURGE for short. The 6.5m Magellan Baade telescope at the Las Campanas Observatory, Chile. The events in Charlottesville have once again forced Lowes Home Improvement, one of the countrys largest vendors of tiki torches, to remind our customers that our tiki torches are meant to be used exclusively for burning American flags. There should be no ambiguity here. Thanks to their durable design and long-lasting, refillable fuel canisters, our bamboo tiki torches are the ideal implement for torching the American flag. It should thus go without saying that using our tiki torches for things like neo-Nazi rallies, backyard luaus, or restaurant decor is wildly inappropriate. The only proper use of ...

We are all familiar with the special trappings worn by royalty, but we are not so familiar with the regalia of the Papacy. This is a list of the top 10 items of papal regalia, most of which are still in use today. 10. Mantum The mantum or papal mantle differs little from an ordinary cope except that it is somewhat longer, and is fastened in the front by an elaborate morse. In earlier centuries it was red in colour; red, at the time being the papal color rather than white. In the eleventh and twelfth centuries the immantatio, or bestowal of the mantum on the newly elected pope, was regarded as specially symbolical of investiture with papal authority: Investio te de papatu romano ut praesis urbi et orbi, “I invest thee with the Roman papacy, that thou rule over the city and the world...

Sea Shepherd To Stop Pursuit Of Japanese Whale Hunting Ships In Southern Ocean

Uncategorized
Since 2005, Sea Shepherd has been working on the frontline of conservation in the Southern Ocean, using their ships to confront and disturb the vessels of Japanese whalers. On Sunday, the strident marine conservation group announced they will stop sending ships to the Southern Ocean in Antarctica because they can’t keep up with the technology of Japanese whalers. Although they will stop direct action against whaling vessels, they say they will continue to work towards stopping whaling operations in the Southern Ocean. Sea Shepherd claims that Japan is now using military surveillance and satellite technology to keep tabs on its ships’ movements. This means that the whaling ships are able to avoid Sea Shepherds’ vessels with ease. ...
How A Gene’s Location Determines Its Activity

How A Gene’s Location Determines Its Activity

The position of a gene on its chromosome influences its expression. Although this idea has been dawning on biologists for many years, confirmation has been elusive. A new study sheds some light on the way neighboring DNA alter how active a gene is and the extent to which it mutates. An early view of genetics, still often taught at high school, holds that each gene single-handedly determines the protein that will be produced and therefore the biological consequences. Mutations in the genes DNA may alter the protein produced, and dominant versions may suppress the recessive ones, but the chromosomal environment was considered irrelevant. As weve learned in recent years, things are far more complex. What was once termed junk DNA plays a big part in regula...
