Lions And Lambs: Can You Solve This Classic Game Theory Puzzle?

Uncategorized
How many lions does it take to kill a lamb? The answer isnt as straightforward as you might think. Not, at least, according to game theory. Game theory is a branch of maths that studies and predicts decision-making. It often involves creating hypothetical scenarios, or games, whereby a number of individuals called players or agents can choose from a defined set of actions according to a series of rules. Each action will have a pay-off and the aim is usually to find the maximum pay-off for each player in order to work out how they would likely behave. This method has been used in a wide variety of subjects, including economics, biology, politics and psychology, and to help explain behaviour in auctions, voting and market competition. But game theory, th...

Melting Sea Ice Causing Hungry Polar Bears To Switch From Seals To Goose Nesting Sites

Uncategorized
As the ice melts, polar bears are struggling to get enough to eat. Usually, they rely on ringed seals to make up the bulk of their diet, but they need sea ice to hunt. This major shift in the environment is driving the emergence of new behaviors, with polar bears in Svalbard turning instead to poaching eggs. Researchers have been tracking the bears living on the Arctic island to see how they are responding to the shrinking sea ice. They have been monitoring the animals diet, noting how it is altering in response to the warming region, paying particular attention to before and after the dramatic melting of sea ice in 2006. And theyve found some pretty striking changes. Published in the Journal of Animal Ecology, the team report how they have tagged 60 r...

As if Burning Man wasnt already crazy enough, vandals raided a VIP camp, cut off electricity and glued their doors shut. White Ocean, which was founded by the son of a Russian billionaire, was targeted on Wednesday night. Representatives described the chaos in a post on Facebook. Part of it read, A very unfortunate and saddening event happened last night at White Ocean, something we thought would never be possible in OUR Burning Man utopia. A band of hooligans raided our camp, stole from us, pulled and sliced all of our electrical lines leaving us with no refrigeration and wasting our food and, glued our trailer doors shut, vandalized most of our camping infrastructure, dumped 200 gallons of potable water flooding our camp. Negotiate, Negotiate, Negotiate Sometimes, working on a holiday is unavoidable. After all, can you imagine what would happen if every doctor, airline pilot, taxi driver and police officer insisted on taking Thanksgiving off? That said, you often have a little room to negotiate. Depending on the nature of your job, ask your boss if you can work from home. If that’s not an option, inquire about splitting a shift so that you only work half of the holiday. And if you absolutely have to be in the office the entire day, ask about getting an extra day off over the n

10 Men Who Almost Died Before They Could Change The World

Every now and then, the world produces someone so intelligent, so creative, or just so different that they change everything. But history isn’t always smooth sailing. Those people with the brains or ideas to transform our culture sometimes nearly perish before they can even get started. 10 George Orwell Nearly Died In Spain (Twice) Two days before Christmas in 1936, George Orwell boarded a train and vanished into the madness of the Spanish Civil War. At the time, Moscow-backed communists and independent anarchists were fighting General Franco’s fascist forces in a battle that would claim 500,000 lives. Arriving in Barcelona, the young writer immediately took up arms with the anarchists—only to be shot through the throat and nearly killed by a fascist sniper. At the time, Orwell was

But we have to wonder, is this the real Jesus of the Bible or a Jesus of our own making? In Romans, the Apostle Paul teaches of Christs mission to call out a people and form them into His likeness, but it seems we are more interested in forming Jesus into our image. Even conservative, Bible-believing evangelicals are fond of making statements like, The Jesus I know would as if Jesuswho claimed to be th...

Stick Bug Study Suggests Evolution is Predictable

Certain aspects of evolution -- such as the creation of new species -- can be predicted and repeatable, a new study finds. An analysis of stick insect genomes reveals the role of natural selection in speciation: Natural selection can drive two different populations of the same species to develop similar traits by inducing similar genetic changes on their genomes. The findings also suggest that two very similar species might evolve separately if they were placed under the same environmental pressures.    If you could rewind "the videotape of life," would animals evolve exactly the same way they did? “Our results suggest, at least partially, yes,” Zach Gompert from Utah State says in a news release. “Despite some idiosyncratic outcomes, there may be a repeatab

If you see an old animal, then the odds are it will be female, as the males rarely make it past five years of age, as they are often shot for their antlers. The researchers wanted to clarify whether the survival of female elk was being driven due to the selective hunting by humans in which the boldest animals are most l...

If We Really Want An Ideas Boom, We Need More Women At The Top Tiers Of Science

On Wednesday May 30, Emma Johnston, Nalini Joshi and Tanya Monro spoke at the National Press Club for a special Women Of Science event. Here they outline their views on how to promote greater participation by women at the top levels of science. Few of us would imagine accepting that our daughters have fewer options than our sons. And yet that is exactly the situation we allow to persist in Australian science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) today. The 2016 woman scientists story starts well enough, particularly when you compare it with her 1960s counterpart. Fifty-six per cent of undergraduates and half of PhD students are female. Even better, almost 60% of junior science lecturers are female. These bright, talented people are eager to find cures for all canc...

Historic Paris Climate Agreement Set To Come Into Force After EU Ratification

Uncategorized
When the worlds governments came together in Paris at the end of 2015, it was a historic moment as the largest gathering of world leaders began groundbreaking negotiations to limit climate change. Now, it seems that these talks have finally come to fruition. With the European Union voting to ratify the deal on Tuesday, it means that just 11months after talks took place, the agreement will come into force, withall the signatories now compelled tomeet their climate commitments. Before the vote took place, there were 63 nations representing 52 percent of global greenhouse emissions already signed up to the accord. This was within striking distance of the 55 nations accounting for 55 percent of emissions needed for the deal to come into force. With the EU thought to emit at least 12 percent o...

here are things in life we're all afraid of. Spiders. Airplane flights. Rats. But the recent experience of a 19-year-old camp counselor leaves all of those in the dust. After tucking into his sleeping bag and falling asleep, the teen woke up to find his head in a black bear's mouth. The teen, identified only by first name Dylan, told The Denver Channel, that he awoke early Sunday morning to a crunching soundwhat he believes was a result of bears teeth scraping against his skull. Dylan and four other staff members at Glacier View Ranch, a Christian camp near Boulder, Colorado, were outside sleeping in sleeping bags when the bear attacked. The teen described the bear clawing his forehead, and the biting the back of his head to drag him away from the other staffers. WATCH: I woke up to a cru...

Various media roundups* characterized his quotes as “ridiculous,” “textbook-crazy,” “obnoxious,” and, well, you get the point.** All of this makes me wonder if anyone actually read the interview, because he talks

CULTURE
In the central part of Ohio, there is a town called Loudonville. Most people know it for its camping and canoeing, but in the middle of the woods there is a hidden secret that few people know about (until now). An adorable red barn-style treehouse was built to entertain tourists going through the area, but it isn't for children. That's because it's a brewery. The Treehouse Brewing Company is contained in a 200 square foot room built high above the ground. Along with a small Amish building crew, Nelson Treehouse and Supply built the brewery in only four weeks. The brewing company is 22 feet off of the ground. Theunis Botha, a well-known 51-year-old big game hunter from Johannesberg, South Africa, just had his last hunt. The man was leading a group of hunters in Gwai, Zimbabwe, when they saw a herd of breeding elephants. Sensing the danger, three of the animals stormed the hunters and Botha shot at them. What the man didn’t see was a fourth elephant coming after him from the side… The animal lifted Botha with her trunk, so one of the other hunters shot her, causing the elephant to collapse. As she fell dead, the elephant dropped right on Botha, crushing the hunter to death. According to Game Hounds Safaris, Botha’s company website, the man pioneered European-syle ‘Monteria hunts’ in the region. These kind of hunts use large packs of dogs to drive deer and boar tow...

Brutal Warfare May Help Explain Differences In Chimpanzee And Bonobo Societies

Uncategorized
Chimpanzee and bonobo societies differ fundamentally. While males dominate among chimps, females are at the top of the hierarchy for bonobos, and new research published in Royal Society Open Science suggests that this may be down to the savage warfare that chimps wage. Despite chimpanzees having been known about in the western world perhaps for thousands of years, because of how similar the two ape species appear, the bonobo was not formally described as a separate species until 1928. Since then, it has become apparent that, despite living in very similar environments and looking morphologically alike, the two animals are strikingly different indeed. While chimpanzee males are highly territorial, with hostile and sometimes lethal intergroup encounters,...

A drone captures a large pod of Humpback Whales feeding in the pristine waters of Alaska. The aerial drone footage, captured by AkxPro, shows a seagull’s POV of the scene. The humpbacks are using a coordinated hunting technique known as ‘bubble net feeding’. They start by making incredibly high-pitched noises which drives the fish to the surface. They then blow air bubbles (which act as a wall) to surround and concentrate their prey before they all rise to the surface with mouths open for feeding. Birds are often associated with a sense of peacefulness; they are the first thing you hear on a sunny day when you wake up in the morning, or when you go for a pleasant stroll through the park. But they can also be cruel, hellbent bastards, leaving a careless path of death and destruction in their wake. While they may be capable of all kinds of monstrosities, they are a sort of affirmation that we do live in a world that has a tendency to chew you up and spit you out in the game of good, Darwinian sport. Here are ten birds you’re better off avoiding. You might think that the worst a seagull could do is fly away with you lunch, or crap on your parade, but these beach dwellers have a dark side lurking just beneath their feathers. The future is not looking bright for polar bears living in Canada’s Arctic islands. If the current climate trend continues to the end of the century, sea ice decline will mean that many areas are no longer able to support polar bears, a depressing new study has found. With an absence of ice for several months a year, polar bears may face losing their cubs and starvation, leaving a rather bleak outlook for this population. The work has been published in the open access journal PLOS ONE. The world is warming up, and it’s having devastating impacts on ecosystems. Among those areas feeling the heat is the Arctic, which has lost an average of 54,000 square kilometers (20,800 square miles) of ice every year since the late 1970s. It’s part of an initiative encouraging city dwellers to get off the grid and experience nature, and we can’t lie – we’re dying to go for it! The plywood shelter contains three floors, circular white beds, and an adjoined boardwalk overlooking nearby wetlands. Dubbed Les Guetteurs (“the watchers”), the timber strigidae were designed and constructed by contemporary art producer Zébra3, a project commissioned by artist-architect collective Bruit de Frigo as part of their Refuges périurbains (“peri-urban shelters”) campaign. If you’re planning a trip t...

Who Owns The Moon?

Who Owns The Moon?

Uncategorized
Whether you’re into mining, energy or tourism, there are lots of reasons to explore space. Some “pioneers” even believe humanity’s survival depends on colonising celestial bodies such as the moon and Mars, both becoming central hubs for our further journey into the cosmos. Lunar land peddlers have started doing deals already – a one-acre plot can be yours for just £16.75. More seriously, big corporations, rich entrepreneurs and even US politicians are eyeing up the moon and its untapped resources. Russia has plans for a manned colony by 2030 and a Japanese firm wants to build a ring of solar panels around the moon and beam energy back to Earth. We need to be clear about the legal validity of extraterrestrial real estate as the same ideas that were once used to justi

10 Bizzare Sculptures by David Cerny

Humanities
Meet David Cerny – an internationally famous Czech sculptor, best known for his giant space-age babies that crawl up the Zizkov TV tower a hundred meters or so above Prague. Born in December 15, 1967 in Prague, he gained notoriety in 1991 by painting a Soviet tank pink that served as a war memorial in central Prague. As the Monument to Soviet tank crews was still a national cultural monument at that time, his act of civil disobedience was considered “hooliganism” and he was briefly arrested[1]. Send Us Your Hurricane Sandy Pics

Much of the East Coast is shut down in preparation for Hurricane Sandy, a Category 1 hurricane that has already wreaked damage through the Caribbean and up the Atlantic seaboard. Schools and bridges are closed, public transportation is suspended and many stores are sold out of survival essentials. We've got saltines, stockpiled water and, for now, high-speed Wi-Fi. Sandy, we're ready for you. Despite how terrifying this "Frankenstorm" is, we've also been impressed by the amazing imagery that has already come out of Sandy. Has the storm hit your area? We want to see your pictures of the storm and how it's affected you (so long as taking the pictures in no way poses a threat to your safety). We'll compile a gallery of pictures from Mashable readers so we can track Sandy as she travels ar...

Homeless Dog Found In Garbage Becomes A Lion He Deserves To Be

Uncategorized
When German photographer Julie Marie Werner found a scruffy homeless dog hunting for scraps of food in her garbage in Spain, she fell in love with him immediately. While other people saw nothing but a homeless mutt, she saw a brave little lion, and she now wants the world to share her vision with this heartwarming series of photographs. The cute canine model is named Tschikko Leopold von Werner, and the project is called Grossstadtlowe, which means “Big City Lion”. And as you can see from these pictures, he really does look like the king of the (urban) jungle! Julie believes that Tschikko was left to fend for himself after being thrown from a car in Spain. He’s come a long way since then, not just emotionally but also geographically, as after deciding to adopt him Ju...

10 Historical Characters and their Unusual Pets

History
Many famous historical characters have had famous animal companions; however, some others didn’t settle for mere dogs or cats as companions. Here’s a list of some of the most unusual pets in History. In many parts of south eastern Asia, white elephants (an extremely rare color variety of the Asiatic elephant, rather than a separate species) were thought to be sacred, an omen of good fortune and symbol of all things royal and/or divine. Pope Leo X (who was a member of the powerful Medici family, and the last non-priest to be crowned Pope), is said to have received a white elephant, named Hanno, as a gift on his coronation; it was given to him by King Manuel I of Portugal, who had probably acquired it via his viceroy in India. The elephant was sent from Lisbon to Rome, in 151...
