As adults, were often nostalgic for our childhood. A time when life seemed so much simpler. When we were free from the hassles of money, pressures of work and responsibilities of family and care. When we were free to play and imagine people and worlds far from reality, and almost everything we did was new, exciting, and to be explored and understood; to be conquered, torn apart, feared, cuddled or tasted. It might come as a surprise to learn that even having a childhood is something unique to humans. Were the only primate to have one, and the only one also to suffer the pangs of adolescence; but thats another story. Childhood is one stage in the human life cycle, or what biologists call our life history. Life history is, for example, the time it takes for a fetus to grow, or the length of...

Climate Change Threatens Range of Bald Eagles and Half of American Bird Species

The bald eagle is an important icon to several Native American tribes and was adopted as the national bird of the United States in 1782. Unfortunately, the survival of this iconic bird is being threatened by a changing climate. In fact, warming temperatures are a looming danger to 314 species of birds, which is nearly half of all species found in the U.S. These birds could lose anywhere from 50 to 100% of their range, according to a new study from the National Audubon Society, a national bird conservancy organization with nearly 500 local chapters. Many birds migrate at certain times of the year in order to breed or take advantage of seasonally-available food sources. However, increasingly warm temperatures are causing fluctuations in where and when the birds travel....

If you are American, youve no doubt experienced the popularity of hot dogs. They are everywhere, especially during the summer months. Go to a ballgame, you have to get a hot dog. Go to the park, there will be a hot dog vendor. Even many of the big box stores will set up outdoor hot dog stands during the summer months. Hot dogs are consumed like crazy, and you may have had hundreds or thousands of them in your lifetime. Unfortunately, the reality of the hot dog is one you probably dont want to know about, but definitely need to know about. Despite the popularity, in reality hot dogs are plain nasty. These mass produced meats are filled with nasty additives, jacked up with corn syrups, animal fats, and the notoriously unhealthy MSGs. To add insult to injury, some of the nasty stuff isnt eve...

The real headache for many travelers is a quickly-growing list of hotel surcharges, even for items they never use. Guaranteeing two queen beds or one king bed will cost you, as will checking in early or checking out late. Don't need the in-room safe? You're likely still paying. And the overpriced can of soda may be the least of your issues with the hotel minibar. Vacationers are finding it harder to anticipate the true cost of their stay, especially because many of these charges vary from hotel to hotel, even within the same chain. CHÂTEAU DE CHAMBFORD Photograph by Patrick Giraud The royal Château de Chambord at Chambord, Loir-et-Cher, France, is one of the most recognizable châteaux in the world because of its distinct French Renaissance architecture which blends traditional French medieval forms with classical Renaissance structures. The building, which was never completed, was constructed from 1519-1547 by King François I in part to be near to his mistress the Comtesse de Thoury, Claude Rohan, wife of Julien de Clermont, a member of a very important family of France, whose domaine, the château de Muides, was adjacent. Sure, you can do a lot of things to space food to make it less space-food-y: You can spice it and sweeten it and try to make it simulate, as much as possible, its Earth-bound counterparts. Ultimately, though, the foodstuffs you're consuming are still desiccated/rehydrated/irradiated/thermostabilized. Which is all compounded by the fact that your taste buds are sort of shot by the whole microgravity thing, anyway. But it's Thanksgiving! And we celebrate Thanksgiving with our feasting! We usually think of the hormone oxytocin, known as the "cuddle hormone" or "love hormone", as being released when mothers cuddle their infants, or when lovers cuddle each other. But a new study suggests it may have another use other thanbonding individuals together preparing them for war instead. Researchers have found that as chimpanzees prepare themselves for battle, levels of oxytocin surge, suggesting that the hormone may have a more sinister function. This is not the first time that the hormone has been implicated in aggressive situations. Previous experiments havefound that humans split into teams and presented with a competitive task also show spikes in their oxytocin levels, but this latest study from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropologyhas confirmed a similar th...

What If Zuckerberg Stepped Down as Facebook CEO?

Shark Week may be over — but for Facebook CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg, the sharks are just starting to circle. Facebook stock, continuing its disastrous slide, is now worth half of its price at IPO. Peter Thiel, Facebook's first major investor, dumped nearly all of his stake in the social network for $400 million. Wall Street grumbling has led USA Today, the Los Angeles Times and NBC News to run stories in the last few days all asking the same question: is Zuckerberg's job secure? Monday's Mashable poll asking if the founder should step aside has, at time of writing, 2,600 respondents saying he should go. Just under 2,800 support Zuckerberg, with 800 on the fence. That's a victory of sorts for him, but not exactly a ringing endorsement. Let's be clear: Zuck isn't in any immediate

The Australian humpback dolphin is real, distinct and finally has its own name thanks to publication in Marine Mammal Science. Determining whether similar creatures are the same species or not can be difficult. For some time there has been confusion as to whether humpback dolphins were one species or two. Last year a study by the Wildlife Conservation Society concluded there were actually four – with one species in the Atlantic, two with overlapping ranges in the Indo-Pacific and one in Australian waters. It takes a while for formal recognition to come through, but now it has, and the Australian version is Sousa sahulensis. "We've finally managed to settle many long-standing questions about humpback dolphins -- particularly how many species actually exist -- using a

Top 10 Deceptively Dangerous Dog Breeds

Animals
In a previous list, I highlighted ten breeds of dog that have become subject to bans throughout the world for their immensity and aggression. The fact is, big dogs often get a bum rap. Many little dogs bite as much, if not more frequently than their larger brethren. Because of their smaller size, the bites aren’t serious and rarely require medical attention, which skews the statistics unfairly. Below is a list of ten breeds that, while small or not otherwise overtly intimidating, are frequently underestimated. Dachshund means ‘badger dog’ in German, and any canine bred for the purpose of dealing with such a beast is no joke. A badger is a fierce enemy, pound for pound one of the most dangerous creatures on earth; the dachshund had to match it in intensity to have any ...

The latter has already turned out to be well founded, with seven members of the new tribe treated for flu, although so far treatment seems to have been successful. Interestingly, and perhaps ironically, the beautiful light orangey-red canid in the cover picture of that article looks nothing like a western coyote and has striking observable characteristics of both coyotes and wolves, as we...

10 Terrifying Unsolved Serial Murders

Crime
Our audience here at Listverse has a bit of a fascination with serial killers. Humans seem to have a morbid curiosity about the monsters who perpetrate these serial murders; it’s even the subject of our most popular list of all time. Before you whip out the pepper spray, were talking about the cats, not sassy middle-aged women. And if predictions are correct, this might mean that the Midwest is repopulated within just a few decades, which could have implications for wildlife conservation and predator management. Cougars, also called pumas and mountain lions, used to call the Midwest their home, but they were wiped out more than a hundred years ago thanks to a combination of hunting and habitat loss from development. But since 1990 more and more have been popping up further east, with more than 170 confirmed appearances in the Midwest betw...

View this image › Via soluce.jeuxactu.com It’s hard to make a scary video game. There are a lot of reasons for this, starting with the fact that most modern games don’t punish death — just respawn! — and the idea that a truly scary game requires messing with many of the features that make modern games feel modern, like smooth controls and smart cameras. You can’t really be afraid when you’re in total control and you can see everything easily.
