Dolphin Catapults Porpoise In Deadly Attack

A porpoise was killed earlier this week after being flung from the sea by a dolphin in Newlyn Harbour in Cornwall, England. Though marine biologists cant say for certain what drove the battling bottlenose to attack the ill-fated creature, the Cornwall Wildlife Trust (CWT) told BBC News that the assault may be a case of misdirected sexual aggression. Photographs of the marine mammal mayhem were captured by rowers Lizzie Warner and Sue Nankervis of the Pendeen Pilot Gig Club, who happened to be out on the water when the violent incident occurred. The CWT says that while there a number of possible motivations for the attack, predation is definitely not one of them: Many theories have been put forward, including misdirected infanticide (bottlenoses will kill calves), misdirected sexual aggres...

Zookeeper Shows Why You Should Never EVER Turn Your Back On A Tiger, If You Want To Keep Breathing

Big cats have long been something of a fascination for people all across the globe. The ancient Egyptians worshiped cats in general, the Indians have tigers in their homes, and all around some of the favorite zoo exhibits for children have always been the lions and tigers. There’s just something about these creatures that seems to feel majestic to us, and if history is any teacher they will likely continue to be as long as we manage to keep the species alive. However, taking care of a large cat means a little more than just “throw the food in” like many children are apt to believe. For years zookeepers have stressed the importance of not entering any enclosures with their animals, and those warnings have been met with a slew of people doing the exact opposite because&hel...

8 Ways to Ensure Human Survival

Humans
Recently, renowned physicist Stephen Hawking announced that if humans didn’t want to face extinction, our only option is to abandon planet Earth. In addition to the threats most species face, we humans also have the capability to destroy ourselves and/or our planet with thermonuclear weapons. Nuclear devastation tops a long list of ways for us to go out, including asteroid impacts, solar storms, disease outbreaks, etc. Here’s a fun fact: Over 99% of all species that have ever existed on our planet have gone extinct. Still, assuming Earth someday becomes inhospitable due to some catastrophe, here are 8 ways for us to avoid extinction. In the event of widespread devastation such as a nuclear holocaust, asteroid impact or some other large-scale environmental disaster, one...

Why wolves mate for life and 22 other interesting things to know about these animals.

In movies, wolves are often depicted as terrifying, snarling creatures that threaten our heroes. What kid can forget the pack of growling wolves that chase Belle's father right up to the Beast's castle? Authors such as Aesop, the Brothers Grimm, and Charles Perrault all wrote children's stories where the "big bad wolf" was the ravening villain, willing to do anything to fill his belly even impersonate grandma for a chance to eat Little Red Riding Hood! Over and over throughout history, literature, and movies, the wolf was used as a metaphor for trickery, evil, and cruelty. As a result, it's easy to assume that these animals are actually something to fear. But wolves don't deserve this bad rap. They are actually pretty amazing animals, and they play an important role in nature. For...

Reggae, the unique bouncing music with the sticky beat and the emphasis on percussion and bass, formed out of mento, rocksteady and ska. It has developed into many sub-genres and has left an indelible mark on popular music, even influencing the early development of hip hop. This list presents ten of, what the author believes to be, the greatest reggae singers of all time. The singers’ international success, album sales and impact on the music itself have all been taken into account. Paring this list down to the ten greatest was difficult, so a number of great singers whose careers began more recently have been left off. It may be anachronistic to refer to ska and rocksteady as reggae, but it has become common to categorize these two genres under this heading. Please note that t...

One week of camping outdoors and eschewing all man-made light is enough to reset a person’s body clock to its natural sleep rhythms, a new study has found. Our increased use of electrical light, and reduced exposure to natural light, caused modern humans to stray from our natural circadian rhythms or sleep patterns, and may be a contributor to poor quality sleep. The findings, published in Current Biology, show that humans' internal biological clocks will synchronise to a natural, midsummer light-dark cycle if the opportunity arises. A midsummer light-dark cycle in Colorado, in the US where the study took place, is 14 hours and 40 minutes of light, 9 hours and 20 minutes of darkness in a 24 hour period. Five years (and six phone launches) later, the lines are an expectation — even if the public at large still finds the concept of waiting overnight for a phone ridiculous. Still, each year, more and more individuals line up for the latest iPhone (and now iPad). And it does all that with a surprisingly compact genome -- likely an adaptation to life in extreme environments, according to work published in Nature Communications this week. This small fly is the only fully terrestrial animal native to Antarctica, spending its life on frozen rocky outcrops, eating bacteria, algae, and nitrogen-rich penguin waste. The larvae develop over two winters, losing half their body mass each time. When they mature into the wingless adults, they spend just a week or so mating and laying eggs

Girl With A Very Rare Disease Meets The Extremely Rare Donor Who Saved Her Life.

NEWS
A young Wisconsin girl, who would have died a few years ago without a bone marrow transplant, has finally met the man whose donation ended up saving her life. Three years ago Mira Erdmann was diagnosed with a very rare auto-immune disease that affects about one in a million people. Doctors told her parents that their only hope was a bone marrow transplant, and even with one the chances of survival were very slim. Luckily for the Erdmann family there was a donor an ocean away. Chrestean Werth, of Germany, found out he was Mira's match just three months after he became a donor, and after one transplant, several complications and a 5% chance of survival, Mira miraculously pulled through. The donor registry requires anonymity for two years. That's why the pair were only able ...

It Turns Out Neil From ‘Art Attack’ Leads A Surprising Double Life

Everyone knows Neil Buchanan from Art Attack, right? He was thebright and cheery guy who gave us some seriously killer advice on how to use felt tips and glitter. When we were all enthralled by his amazing bits of large scale garden artwork and his love of sequins and PVA glue, he was secretly living his dream of being a rockstar on the side. No joke. It has transpired that the glue stick wielding TV presenter has been a part of rock band Marsielle since 1976, fourteen years before Art Attack began inspiring kids to make a mess. Marseille were the first band to win the UK Battle Of The Bands at Wembley, a victory that came thanks to judges Brian May and Roger Taylor of Queen fame. Neil went on to become more famous for his seriously big collages in random outdoor spaces, but deep dow...

7 myths you shouldn’t believe about staying in a mental hospital.

I waited as the elevator ascended at an achingly slow pace. Anxiety filled my body, and I could hardly breathe. When the doors finally opened, I stepped out, clutching my bag, expecting to see a creepy monochromatic clinical space filled with zombies and screaming people being held down by aggressive staff whose sole job was to control patients like caged animals. Instead, I was welcomed by a wall of bright, hand-drawn inspirational quotes and a handful of warm smiles from staff and other patients. I started to breathe again. Maybe this wouldn't be as bad as I thought it would be. Every hospital is different, but the one thing I can attest to after several stays at several different institutions is that psychiatric hospitals are nothing like they are portrayed in movies or on televisi...

When I was young, the only planets we knew about were the ones in our own solar system. Astronomers presumed that many of the other stars in the night sky had planets too, but this was sheer speculation. We could never know for sure, the thinking went, because such planets were ridiculously small and faint. To ever see or study them seemed a complete impossibility. Extrasolar planets, or exoplanets, were a staple of science fiction, but not of professional astrophysics. Its hard to believe that there was once such a simple time. The first definitive detection of an exoplanet was in 1991, identified by the tiny wobbles experienced by the parent star as its exoplanet swung around it. Since then, the field has exploded. There are now around 1,600 confirmed exoplanets, with alm...

Animals
Taxonomy involves the scientific mapping of the genetic family tree of all living species. Thanks to the detective work of scientists, we’re still in the process of uncovering the sometimes shocking facts about species. In this perception-altering list, we’ll learn that our dogs are more closely related to seals than to cats; explore the humble barnacle’s surprising identity; and discover why seed-eating parrots have a tooth designed to break vertebrae: North and South America are inhabited by a massive predatory cat known as the cougar, or mountain lion. Weighing in at more than two hundred pounds, and growing to a length of more than nine feet, the cat aggressively hunts down prey as large as cattle and wild horses. But genetically . . . well, the proud predators wo...

Or unless you live in Iceland. Last night, with an especially powerful aurora in the forecast, the Reykjavik City Council did something that, on a normal day, might have led to a flood of angry letters or, at the very least, some serious side-eye: They turned off the lights. Between 10 p.m. and midnight, all the streetlights in town went dark to give residents the best possible view of the northern lights. And ... well. ...

The news was exciting she already had two little sisters, so a little brother was bound to be different. She couldn't wait to meet him. But when Mark was born on Sept. 17, 1957, the doctors knew right away that something was wrong. His ear was folded over onto itself and his head was out of proportion with the rest of his body. A specialist was called in to examine him, X-rays were performed, and it was revealed that Mark was born with only one kidney, and it was abnormally small about the size of peanut. His pituitary gland was also barely functioning and he had congenital hydrocephalus, a condition that causes an accumulation of fluid in the brain. Mark was immediately transfe...

The decade after the first US airliner was hijacked and flown to Cuba may be thought of as the “golden age” of US hijackings. Anyone who remembers this era knows just how frequently planes were being hijacked. Prior to 1958 only one airplane was hijacked, per year, on average, in the entire world. The worst year was 1969 when 82 airplanes were hijacked. US airplane hijackings headed for Cuba became so common the FBI considered setting up a fake Havana airport in southern Florida to trick hijackers into thinking they had arrived in Cuba. “Take me to Cuba” became a national catchphrase. There was great confusion during this period of time about what to do with the hijackers – give into their demands or try to take them out (this ended on September 11, 2001, afte...

We often picture fairies as those little human-like beings that fly around surrounded by their little sparkly auras. They are usually depicted as precocious, like Tinkerbell in Peter Pan, or beneficent, like the fairy godmothers in various Disney films. However, fairykind isn’t limited to these stereotypes—various cultural folklore depicted fairies so vicious and frightening they could make your grandmother cry. If they weren’t being scary, they were being selfish jerks. 10 Leanhaum-Shee The Leanhaum-Shee was essentially a vampiric fairy who preyed on men on the Isle of Man.
